Very proactive health department, informing entire health district, sending
out brochures, etc.  Note when they expect it in the USA!!!

HI Pugmom, I wonder why he would say we would have our first case by this summer. He really couldn't know that. Unless he know things that we don't know....

I think there is a lot we dont know. Why would the governement spend so much money on brid flu if it was not GOING to happen? Seems to me they know alot more than we do and that is what frightens me. I want the truth from our government , but I dont think we will ever get it untill its to late.

You are right on, Rhonda.  The government will only spill out what is absolutely necessary, and even then when it is only politically necessary.

There is so much that we just don't know for sure yet....accurate numbers, test results, follow-ups, etc re all of these BF outbreaks.  Throw on top of that the fact that some of the foreign governments make the US government look like the ideal type of government...sheesh!

My Township has mailed a letter about the potential pandemic to all residents, which stated we should all be preparing. Also, this was posted on their website:  Still, almost everyone in my neighborhood thinks I am being paranoid when I express concern. It is very frustrating!!

Lower Providence Township 100 PARKLANE DRIVE • EAGLEVILLE, PA 19403 Phone: (610) 539-8020 Fax: (610) 539-6347 E-mail: admin@lowerprovidenc.org www.lowerprovidence.org Date: March 22, 2006

Release: Immediate

Contact: Charles DeFrangesco, Emergency Management Coordinator

610-539-8020, ext. 146

cad@lowerprovidence.org

LOWER PROVIDENCE TOWNSHIP – With officials predicting that the Avian flu could reach the United States later this year, Lower Providence Township is taking the threat of an outbreak and its responsibility should one occur very seriously. A task force, which received the backing of the Board of Supervisors at its March 16 meeting, is working to formulate a response plan.

"It is our responsibility to keep the residents informed and ensure that essential services provided by the township continue," said Emergency Management Coordinator Charles A. DeFrangesco, who is serving as chairman of the task force. "We also are working with our business community to help employers put a continuity plan in place."

Informational materials will be mailed to residents and businesses. The township’s website and Community Cable Access Channel will allow officials to provide important updates and instructions, if necessary.

As the events of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina have demonstrated, education, preparation and advance planning are essential when dealing with potential threats, said DeFrangesco. While there is no way to predict what will happen, there are steps the township, residents and businesses can take now to prepare for an outbreak.

The township will be providing residents with information about the bird flu and what actions they can take to help lessen the impact should a pandemic outbreak occur. Additionally, township officials will be meeting with members of the business community to assist them with formulating a continuity plan. In the event of an outbreak, businesses will play a vital role in protecting workers’ health and limiting the impact to the economy.

Avian flu, a virus that occurs mainly in birds, is highly contagious and deadly among birds. It does not usually infect people, but infections with these viruses have occurred in humans. Most of these cases have resulted from people having direct or close contact with infected poultry or contaminated surfaces. In the current outbreaks in Asia and Europe, more than half of those infected with the virus have died.

Lower Providence Township 100 PARKLANE DRIVE • EAGLEVILLE, PA 19403 Phone: (610) 539-8020 Fax: (610) 539-6347 E-mail: admin@lowerprovidenc.org www.lowerprovidence.org

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the spread of the virus from person to person has been limited and has not continued beyond one person. Nonetheless, because all influenza viruses have the ability to change, scientists are concerned that the bird flu will mutate into a flu that is both contagious and deadly to people and could quickly spread easily from one person to another. If the virus were to gain the capacity to spread easily from person to person, an influenza pandemic, a worldwide outbreak of disease, could begin.

"Any community that fails to prepare – with the expectation that the federal government can offer lifeline – will be tragically wrong," said U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt in a press release dated March 20.

Hi Ruth!!  Remember that post about 2 days ago.  A lady had just talked to her son, who works for Homeland Security, and he was telling her, in muffled whispers, that they all felt it was going to happen soon.  A disturbing post, again implying the powers that be were in the loop and knew more facts than the rest of us.  Oh! What they must be saying behind closed doors!

Well, from first hand ears (mine!): the other week I was at a small-group church meeting, and when I discovered that the person sitting next to me was a physician, I asked him if he knew anything about BF.  Lo and behold, he proceeded to tell me about how is one of the point folks in this midwest city for the city's emergency distribution of med supplies that would be flown in by some group should/when BF hits...and that he and the group had a trial run of one of those huge cargo-type planes landing, unloading a gazingo number of palettes of supplies, loaded onto bunches of trucks, delivered to hospitals and other pre-ordained sites throughout the city, and then palettese unloaded but stopping short of actually opening up the supplies....and the timed response he said was well within their goal; all of this was done incognito with no report of it in the city's press, local news, etc...my own physician was not even aware of it!

And then, on top of that, another person at the small-group meeting who was within earshot of this physician talking to me chimed in to tell us how he is an administrator for the city's electrical company and how he and the other administrators had an emergency meeting to outline what to do if/when BF hits the city.....how to keep the electrical plants, etc functioning so that key parts of the city keep receiving the power needed for whatever (I assume hospitals, law enforcement, water treatment plants, etc.....but he wouldn't say)....he even said that they discussed and have it outlined as to who will be backups should key folks go down with the BF and who will be the backups for the backups, etc.

Wow!  By the time those two finished talking with me, I couldn't keep my mind straight on what the small-group was studying and talking about that evening!  Hah!

But, yes, I agree with you, pugmom, "What they must be saying behind closed doors!"

I wish I was a fly on the wall in one of the government meetings or WHO lunch table. I agree, there's way more to this than we hear. I can't believe the time and energy that is being spent on this in governments around the world.

There's not much secrecy, lots of reports and minutes of meetings at all levels on the web.  See for yourself with http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLR,GGLR:2006-10,GGLR:en&q=committee+meeting+minutes+state+pandemic
One problem is they are not done arguing and ready to educate the public, and still hoping for more funding.

I was in Toronto and worked in a crisis center when the 2k was expected and you be amazed on how prepared they were . There were schools set up with food and water and generators . It was very hush hush . there were hotlines set up and everything was put back without a sign when the kids went back to school.

There were also a ton of body bags bought in preparation. I wonder if that why I dont hear them complain about not being prepared for Avain flu with enough body bags.

He is speculating, and it makes good copy in a newspaper.  Many on this site think it will happen soon, many don't.

A couple of months ago a young policman in N.J. was found dead in his apartment.  He had just returned from Iraq 3 days earlier and according to the news had exhibited flu like symptoms.  Also according to the news they sanitized the area around his apartment and were going to conduct an autopsy but would not release the results for a least 2 weeks.  I've never heard the results and bird flu was of course the first thing that came to my mind.  Does anyone else have any information about this case?

I wonder about this 3 months* ago my son and I were skating in a skate park (so florida). There was alot of bird $#^$ around about 4 days later we both got this strain of flu the likes of which i have never experienced. Bloody nose, coughing sneezing we could not move. My son did not move from the floor for 2 days. A week went by we were alot better but still sick. We went to see doctors I was diagnosed with pnemonia. My sons doctor said he had the worst strep infection he had ever seen. 3 months later ... antibodics...I don't have pnemonia but constant yellow goo. My son coughs up blood (it's not from his lungs but his throat). We are wakeboarders / surfers alot of our friends are complaining of  infection mostly ear nose throat. The antibodics aren't working we are sick of going to the doctors. It just odd because I have been doing this for over 30 years and never seen so much infections? we wakeboard in the everglades and we surf in the inlets sometimes we all joke about being canaries in a coal mind.     * THIS WAS ALSO THE SAME WEEK THE BIRDS DIDN'T DIE IN THE BAHAMAS!!

A friend of our daughter was on vacation in Daytona (bike week). He came down with "pneumonia". He had bad nose bleeds, high fever, cough, sore throat and body aches.  The doctor kept putting him on different antibiotics. None of them seemed to work. He was very sick for 3-4 weeks.
