Albert, we need to put up a list of basic things people will need to SIP they need to know what SIP means. Do we have a basic list like water, can and/or freeze dry food, TP, Kleenex, N 95 masks, gloves, Bleach, just the basic, that we can put in a spot that people will see right away?

If this does get bad, hope it does not, people will look for help on the net and you know we will come up big time.

I know I am getting more bottle water this weekend along with some otc meds at Sams.

Just asking because this looks like it could get bad if it is not already and we just don't know it yet!

I see we have a section for SIP on the front page do you think that is good enough? I just want to help as many as we can if this is bad!

Indeed they will, flumom.   Message received. We should probably create a separate forum topic / room in preparing for this one.   You guys are the experts and the best around and on the planet. I'll start working on it. I agree and will work on it asap.

You're the best, lol. I had an epiphany from your post. We also own the domain name coronavirusinfo.com, and coronavirushelp.com, etc.... I'm hesitant on doing site split for now, but I'll work on you're suggestion. On the Brightside, pandemics don't occur often, so we will figure it out now. Forum prepping room for the corona pandemic. :)

Sounds good to me. I will put in there what I would tell my doubting family members. A lot of people do not want to "waste" money so we need to put practical things in there not to scare them away. We are a bit overboard in our prepping and thinking so we have to bring it down a few notches. Thanks for all you do Albert God has lots of gold to put in your crown!!

Here's a few additional things that tend not to scare people and will get used up eventually:

Prescription meds, normally taken vitamins and otc meds
Pet food/supplies - and cat litter!
Trash bags (if someone is sick the trash is going to be emptied more frequently)
Hand soap/dish detergent/laundry detergent

The food and beverages you crave when you're sick: (crackers, soup, sparkling water, ginger ale, etc)
The meds you usually take when you get a cold (even if it's just a cold people won't want to go to the stores)

Cash - small bills. (this would be in a real ***** hit the fan situation, loss of power, etc)

I used to have great lists, but they've been lost on old computers. And my current lists are mostly for loss of power and would definitely overwhelm most people.

Great start!

-hand sanitizer
-toilet paper
-paper towels
-wound care (topical antibiotic, astringent, bandages, tape)
-matches/lighters
-batteries
-emergency radio
-tobacco (great barter!)
-dried foods (beans, flour, etc.)
-edible oils
-extra eyeglasses/contacts
-hand tools, rope, tape
-chlorine bleach
-water containers

And so forth. Identify your closest off-the-grid source of fresh water, review your emergency evacuation plans, keep in mind that cell phones don't charge themselves, and stay calm.

p.s. don't forget the ammunition, right JD?

Lol you men would scare people. Most people will be lucky if they can afford exter peanut butter jelly, tuna, can soup, can chicken, crackers TP, Kleenex water hand sanitizer. These people for the most part think we are prepper nuts when we talk about beans flour. We have to think about how they will use this stuff if the pandemic does not hit as hard as some of us think it might.

How do I know this because my family no longer will listen to put in extra supplies because the big one has never hit. We need to put levels like level one preps like I have above then level two etc... we just need to put this in the context as a doubting Thomas.

Chuck- Just read your list and realized it has been five years since I added reading glasses to my preps! 1.25's wouldn't do me much good these days! I'd have to use two pairs! Thanks!
Buy more ammo!

I think you're right FluMom about scaring people. It's such a huge task to get ready to SIP during a pandemic.

People should be encouraged to buy enough stuff for one week, and then once they've done that, they can add a second week as they can afford it. The danger is people will make a list for 3 months and spend all their money buying 3 months' worth of baked beans first, then 3 months' worth of crackers, and if disaster were to strike before they've bought everything, they'll find themselves with loads of a few things and lacking everything else.

We need to encourage people to start by getting a little bit of everything and to build up from there.
Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

It should possibly be mentioned that most of these basic supplies can be obtained cheaply at dollar stores/discount stores for those who don't immediately think of it and who are low on finances. I know that sort of practical information may seem obvious, but I joined here when I was in my early 20s and just a dumb college kid, it definitely would have helped me as I prepped for avian flu back then and was completely unseasoned at prepping.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort!

My husband and I used to be avid preppers, but we've let our supplies dwindle over the years (our home flooded after Hurricane Irma and I had to toss so much of it). My daughters tease me about a plastic bin that I have that is full of dried rice and dried pasta from forever ago. I tell them that if things get bad they'll be here eating my outdated-for-years rice and dried beans!

I tried ordering some more N-95s on Amazon last night...nearly all are out of stock. I found some online at Lowes.com and plan to send my hubster to Lowes, Home Depot and Ace Hardware to pick up some more.

Albert - as you pull together the list of supplies, what do you think about adding locations to find some of the items if they aren't available online on in the local grocery store?

Here are some items that we keep on hand for hurricane season (or the next pandemic) that haven't been mentioned above in this thread:

- dried beans
- dry rice
- dry pasta
- coloring books and crayons (unopened) for the grandkids
- solar charger for phones/ipads
- gasoline for generator
- wine (for me LOL)
- crystal lite drink mixes (drinking plain bottled water gets old after a few days)
- canned meats (tuna, chicken, vienna sausages)
- peanut butter
- jelly
- crackers
- beef sticks (like slim jims or beef jerky)
- variety of canned veggies (can be eaten as is or turned into soup)

A new one for those who started using it since the last time we prepared:

Cannabis! Medical or recreational, if you're used to using it you'll want a supply.

And remember to check ebay for supplies, if you can get them before sellers raise the prices.

Just bought a bunch of procedure masks (already have N95 masks) - they're good enough for some of the time, and cheap enough to give to those close to you who aren't prepared at all.

Coronavirus cure: HIV drug could STOP deadly disease in major breakthrough - REVEALED
CORONAVIRUS is being treated with an HIV wonderdrug in a major bid to stop the disease spreading, Chinese doctors have revealed.
By Callum Hoare
PUBLISHED: 14:25, Fri, Jan 24, 2020 | UPDATED: 21:51, Fri, Jan 24, 2020

More than a dozen Britons have been tested for the deadly virus, with the NHS now under orders to question everyone with flu-like symptoms to stop the spread. Health Secretary Matt Hancock has warned of the likelihood that cases of coronavirus will soon be seen in Britain as part of a “rapidly developing” outbreak which has already killed 18 people of the 630 confirmed cases worldwide. Currently known as 2019-nCoV, the virus is understood to be a new strain of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) that killed nearly 800 people in the early Noughties.

The new strain has been found to be at least 70 percent similar in genome sequences to the early-2000 breakout known as SARS-CoV, an animal virus believed to have originated from bats, which first infected humans in the Guangdong province of southern China in 2002.

Two years after the breakout, major research was put forward claiming protease inhibitors, a class of antiviral drugs used to treat HIV/AIDS, could be used to treat SARS.

The study revealed that one of the drugs known as nelfinavir “strongly inhibited relation of the SARS coronavirus,” leading to the decrease of toxins in already infected cells.

It concluded that “nelfinavir could decrease the production of virus from cells".

In 2006, the World Health Organisation (WHO) expert panel on SARS treatment requested a systematic review and comprehensive summary of protease inhibitor treatments used for SARS-infected patients in order to guide future treatment and identify priorities for research.

In the same year, scientists found success in using other protease inhibitors including lopinavir, ritonavir and ribavirin on 41 patients with SARS – the same disease strain found in the new outbreak of coronavirus.

That study found all three treatments produce “significantly lower” negative results, with 2.4 percent having adverse clinical outcomes compared with 28.8 percent without the use.

The study revealed lopinavir and ritonavir were associated with the better outcomes, but since 2004, a variety of different protease inhibitors have been tested, with ribavirin being ruled as "ineffective".

Yesterday, Michael Mina, an epidemiologist at Harvard School of Public Health, revealed experts in Galveston are using protease inhibitors “somewhat successfully" to tackle coronavirus.

Microbiologist Yuen Kwok-yung from the University of Hong Kong has urged citizens in China not to worry and confirmed the use of protease inhibitors will be used to combat the infection.

England’s Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Whitty revealed yesterday that NHS England and Public Health England have issued additional advice to medical staff in the NHS, but did not confirm whether the drugs will be used should an outbreak occur in the UK.

The WHO said it is "too early" to declare an international public health emergency over the outbreak "given its restrictive and binary nature".

Speaking at a press conference, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the WHO, said: "Make no mistake, this is an emergency in China.

"But it has not yet become a global health emergency. It may yet become one."

According to the WHO, the new coronavirus causes a fever, fatigue, sore throat and dry cough in the early stages of the disease.

As the illness progresses, patients may experience difficulty breathing.

But these symptoms – similar to many other respiratory diseases – are what make it so difficult to control.

Albert - I wasn't sure where to put this. I'm guessing I'm not the only one to not have known that not all bleach disinfects.

Regular bleach - 6% = good
Splash less bleach, 1-5% = not a disinfectant
Bleach crystals = not a disinfectant
Clorox 2 - not a disinfectant
