Lots of conjecture on the earlier (pre 1918) flu outbreaks. Some
learned people believe the Middle Ages Black Death was two illnesses at
approximately the same time. One was Bubonic Plague but the other
was a new strain of Bird Flu. TOGETHER they killed a lot of
people (If the theory is true.)
The pre Columbus population of Mexico was estimated (by people who have the capacity to figure stuff like this out) as over 25 Million Indians. A hundred years later there were way under a million Indians left. Most of that was due to Small Pox and measles, but may have included a new (for the Indians) bird flu epidemic.
