I thought we used to have a thread with books listed, but I looked and didn't see one. If we do someone can move this, if not we are starting one. Please share the titles of any good books you have read regarding prepping for emergencies, gardening for food, home canning, anything you might feel relevant for any of our audience here.

I was at a 40% book sale today and picked up "The Ultimate Guide to Homesteading" for $5. It looks like a pretty good read.

Actually, I think General Discussion is a great place for this, Penham.  Nothing wrong with having a subject like this front and center in my opinion. Prepping can be incredibly confusing. Having someone point you in the direction of the more useful literature on the subject is invaluable. And hard copies will be essential in an emergency that leaves the internet disabled and the power grid down.

Not a prepper book per se,  but I'll start with a recommendation from KiwiMum. It's called Lost Countryside Life by Dorothy Hartley, and is a beautifully written account of society in the centuries preceding the 16th century. Among other things, it details agricultural methods and food production, and offers an insight into just how much work it took to survive in a much simpler world.

A book I have in my kindle app is about herbal medicine: Rosemary Gladstar's Medicinal Herbs, a beginner's guide.

It's so helpful and useful. There might be a paperback version too.

I ordered a book I have been looking at for a couple of years now, going back and forth whether I wanted to order or not and I finally did. It's an older book, called "Possum Living" it's about how to live without a job on little or no money. I thought it might be an interesting read and maybe give some ideas on "thinking outside the box". I'm anxious to get it now that I've actually ordered it.

I use a great old American book for all my canning requirements. It tells you how to bottle anything, and most importantly, how to safely bottle/can meat. I would recommend everyone gets a copy, because canned goods are temperature stable which means you can store them in a cupboard rather than a freezer. Combine that with the purchase of the All American aluminium canner (it's the only one that doesn't have a rubber gasket that will eventually perish) and you've got all you need to preserve food without the use of any electricity. I use my canner on top of my woodstove.

The book is Stocking up, how to preserve the foods you grow naturally. by the staff of Organic Gardening and Farming, edited Carol Hupping Stoner. 1977.
Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

I might need all 3 of those books, Penham with the way the economy is going. I ordered my dehydrator too and it should be here tomorrow. It was 24$ off original price on Amazon.
