British holidaymaker quarantined in Thailand after sitting behind someone on a plane who had deadly MERS virus
By John Hutchinson for MailOnline Published: 08:47 EST, 24 June 2015 | Updated: 11:15 EST, 24 June 2015 A British woman has been quarantined in Thailand after sitting behind someone on a plane who was carrying a deadly virus. Kerry Sue Newman flew to southeast Asia earlier this month but is now being kept in a solitary hospital room in the seaside district of Hua Hin for two weeks, some 6,000 miles from home. Miss Newman, 30, was told by Thai authorities she had to be quarantined and was transported by ambulance from the Por Promin Muay camp she was staying at to the hospital. +8 Kerry Sue Newman from Brighton, East Sussex is quarantined in Thailand after it was discovered she sat behind a man who had MERS on a plane +8 Kerry Sue Newman stands with nurses while in quarantine after she was found to have sat near a MERS victim Thailand is currently on high alert as cases of the potentially fatal Middle East respiratory syndrome, known as MERS, have been reported in neighbouring countries. An outbreak in the region has killed a total of 27 people and is mainly focused in South Korea, which has 175 confirmed cases. A total of 2,805 people have been placed in isolation and more than 2,000 schools have been forced to closed. Thailand had its first confirmed case of MERS last week in a 75-year-old man from the country of Oman who had travelled to Bangkok for treatment for a heart condition. Miss Newman, a jeweller from Brighton, East Sussex, had been sat just two rows behind this man after her plane from Heathrow made a stopover in Oman before arriving in Thailand at the weekend. +8 +8 Miss Newman, 30, was told by Thai authorities she had to be quarantined and was transported by ambulance +8 Miss Newman's trip to Thailand is not turning out quite how she expected it to +8 The Brighton woman has described how it feels like a Thai version of big brother WHAT IS THE MERS VIRUS?MERS is a viral respiratory disease caused by a coronavirus (MERS-CoV). It was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012. The virus can affect humans as well as animals though scientists do not yet know exactly how people become infected with MERS-CoV. It is a type of coronavirus - a large family of viruses that can cause diseases ranging from the common cold to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Typically a person infected with MERS will suffer a fever, cough and/pr shortness of breath. Pneumonia is a common sign, as well as gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhoea. In severe cases the virus can cause respiratory failure that requires ventilation and support in an intensive care unit. The virus is known to cause more severe disease in those people who already have a weakened immune system, older people, and those with chronic disease such as diabetes, cancer and chronic lung disease. It is a zoonotic virus, and it is thought humans can become infected via direct or indirect contact with camels that have the disease. Human-to-human transmission is possible, but only via very close contact. Source: WHO She said: 'The first night was somewhat traumatic as I realised I was practically trapped in this one room that is virtually like a cell. Yet I have done absolutely nothing wrong to be locked up and imprisoned like this. 'Also there is a camera in my room so I am being watched, I feel like I am in some sort of strange Thai style Big Brother. 'Once I relaxed and realised that this is for the good of the rest of Thailand, and in fact the rest of the world, everything became a lot easier.' Miss Newman had taken a six month sabbatical to work and train at a martial arts camp in Thailand but will have to remain in quarantine until June 29 as the virus has a two week incubation period. Mers is a flu-like condition with symptoms similar to SARs, and its first recorded case in a human was reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012. It can cause symptoms such as fever, coughing, breathing difficulties, chest pains, nausea, headaches and pneumonia. Miss Newman said: 'When the authorities came to collect me, I thought they were kidding and could not quite believe my bad luck. 'I was originally scheduled to fly on June 6 but had to change my flight to the 15 - so it is just sod's law that I was on this flight with this man. 'I see it as fate. I am clearly supposed to be in isolation for ten days for whatever reason.' A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said they are aware of Miss Newman's case. Dr Richard Pebody of Public Health England said: 'Although any transmission risk is very small, as a precaution, we contact UK passengers on a plane who are in the vicinity of a case to follow-up, provide information and reassurance.' Despite being quarantined, Miss Newman remains upbeat about her situation and on her first evening in the hospital went looking for a beer to help her relax. But she said she was 'caught in the act whilst trying to leave, and had to make up some story about needing milk in order to help me sleep'. She has contacted her family in the UK and said: 'My family were worried initially but I explained the situation and the embassy has also contacted them, so they are fine. In fact my dad laughed and said 'it's about time they locked you up.' 'Whilst in quarantine I have been doing yoga and I am also practising Qi Gong and meditation. I've been dancing in my room to stay active. +8 Unfortunately for Miss Newman she is not able to enjoy the delights of the seaside resort of Hua Hin 'Apparently the risk is not that high, as I am a fit, healthy woman in my prime, and the disease tends to attack the elderly, and those with a weak immune system. 'They found me very quickly and have been looking after my every need. 'They installed a television into my room without me even asking, plus supplying me with lots of fresh fruit and good vegetarian food, plenty of fluids, including juices and lots of milk - basically I am on an involuntary detox.' +8 Miss Newman was seated two rows behind a man who was found to have contracted the MERS virus (file photo) |

Anyone notice the completely inadequate masks worn by hospital staff in the second picture? Oh yeah - Thailand's ready for MERS...

Gee, I noticed that too...we are doomed if any pandemic virus hits this world! NO country including ours is ready for a pandemic. That is why we prep!

hi all im in the UK at the moment ,I don't think she caught it from someone a few rows back in a plane , more likely she somehow shared something or she touch something that he had touched, and is she the only one on the plane that was infected,i was very careful not to touch toilet door handles on the plane as this could be a major source of getting an infection anywhere in the world, also the hand rails on moving walk ways are very scary, thousands of people grab them every day.

Unfortunately she passed away at 9:02am this morning.
I'm kidding. Hi Carbon, she is not a confirmed case, but is being held in quarantine since she was on the same plane. Although, it doesn't mention that she didn't have any symptoms and she was transported by ambulance. I believe this was all just a precaution. Since we haven't really heard of anyone else on the plane going through this, maybe she was the only one they could locate. All of the other passengers may very well be scattered across the globe at this point. Maybe some are starting to show symptoms, and still traveling catching other flights. You never really know. |

Personally, I think she is not infected. I think as Al said she was probebly the only person they could locate. She's upset but been diplomatic about it. She is no Hickox.
