Sacramento Kaiser Permanente Patient Being Tested For Ebola After Possible Exposurehttp://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2014/08/19/sacramento-kaiser-permanente-patient-being-tested-for-ebola-after-possible-exposure/ SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A patient admitted to Kaiser Permanente may have been exposed to the ebola virus, and test are currently being done to determine whether the virus is present, a representative has confirmed to CBS13. The unidentified patient was admitted to the Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center, and they have been placed in isolation. The medical center emphasizes all measures are being taken to protect the staff, and that the samples have been sent to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, who will test them. A similar case happened in New York earlier this month, where a patient who recently visited West Africa was tested for the disease at Mount Sinai Hospital. The tests came back negative. More than 1,200 people have been killed by the virus in West Africa. (This can be moved to the state forum if you like, I didn't see it at first before I posted. Not wearing my glasses at the moment lol.) |

LocalNorthern California Patient Being Treated For Possible Exposure To Ebola Virus
August 19, 2014 5:44 PM
(KPIX) — A patient is being examined for possible exposure to the Ebola virus at Kaiser South Sacramento, according to hospital officials, who are not disclosing when or where the patient could have been exposed to the deadly pathogen. Dr. Stephen Parodi, a specialist on infectious diseases confirmed the patient is being isolated in a “negative pressure room” – to limit any possible risk while the case is being examined, and samples are being sent for testing, although that could take several days. Parodi said in a statement, “In order to protect our patients, staff and physicians, even though infection with the virus is unconfirmed, we are taking the actions recommended by the CDC as a precaution, just as we do for other patients with a suspected infectious disease.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working to rule out any exposure to the deadly African virus that causes hemorrhagic fever, killing 90 percent of those infected. The Ebola virus is not airborne, and is only spread through direct contact with bodily fluids. The CDC tells KPIX 5’s Andria Borba they’ve received 60 reports of potential exposure since the outbreak began, but only received 10 actual samples to test. A similar incident occurred in New York, but the tests turned out negative. The potential of an exposed patient in Northern California comes as the on-going outbreak in West Africa has killed over 1200 people according to the World Health Organization. The outbreak began in Guinea and spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. Anyone sick or exposed to those who are sick have faced quarantines and travel restrictions, sometimes extending across an entire village or county. Three U.S. aid workers were in quarantine in Charlotte, North Carolina to make sure they did not become exposed to Ebola while in Liberia. The virus can have a 21-day incubation period. After that period, doctors feel safe to release the patient, knowing with reasonable certainty the virus did not infect the individual. In Atlanta, another American, Nancy Writebol, is one of two other citizens who did contract Ebola. Her husband was put into quarantine, but has now been released and is with his wife, although separated by sealed glass. David Writebol says her health has been improving daily. The second confirmed American Ebola victim is Dr. Kent Brantly, and like Writebol, his health is also improving. Both patients have received doses of an experimental antiviral drug called ZMapp given to them at Emory Hospital in Atlanta. The experimental drug had been tested on monkeys but never humans until the two patients gave their consent. San Diego-based biotech firm Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc. makes the treatment. The FDA allows for such rare exceptions of unapproved drugs in life-or-death situations, with patients’ informed consent. Welcome, Albert.
Hi Roni, Just looked into it after my work meeting. Got rained on :( So only update is they believe the patient has low risk for Ebola. Official results will be in three days. Heard some hearsay from posters on the feed that the patient's family members might have signs too. Take that part with a grain of salt for now though. |

California Health Officials Not Surprised About Possible Ebola Case In SacramentoSACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A day after word came out that a patient was being tested in Sacramento after possible Ebola exposure, health care officials are waiting for the results. Officials have not released the sex, gender, age or what country the patient visited in West Africa, citing patient privacy laws. But state health officials did say the person came from West Africa earlier this month before arriving in Sacramento, where the patient’s symptoms caused staff to alert state and county officials. Dr. Gil Chavez and Dr. James Watt from the California Department of Public Health say blood samples were sent to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta on Tuesday, and should arrive on Wednesday. “California is an international crossroads. people come here from all over the world, its not surprising that people come here from West Africa,” Watt said. “We’ve already identified potential individuals that were exposed, those individuals have been told of potential exposure and to look for potential symptoms.” Health officials say they are taking a proactive approach, and if the results do come back positive, they say California already has a system in place. “In California we have both a very strong healthcare system that has the capacity for isolation for potential patients and we have a very strong public health system who I think is very good at identifying and isolating patients,” Watt said. |

No. The African tests are done at various places in Africa. The German test was done on someone in Germany by Germany. They only took a few hours but the truth is they first tested for malaria which was positive, eliminating Ebola. |

So much for patient privacy now that we know the person visited W Africa. May as well reveal what town. Like who cares. And leave it up to Ca to use sex and gender in the same sentence. |

Ah so Germany was more proactive then. I think my friend had to take a malaria shot or something, she's doing the peace corps in Senegal. My other friend from college moved to South Africa after graduation to live with her boyfriend, but her family is Nigerian.
Yeah, the privacy died rather quick. They seem to sneak little tidbits in here and there. Yeah I didn't get why it was such a big deal to reveal basic info. As long as the name isn't revealed, why does it matter? Honest question. That's because California is PC up the wazoo lol |

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —A University of New Mexico Hospital patient who was tested this week for Ebola is not infected with the virus, according to test results from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The hospital received the results on Thursday, according to UNMH epidemiologist Dr. Meghan Brett, who helped coordinate the precautionary care and testing. “The safety and well-being of our patients, visitors and staff is our top priority,” said Dr. Robert Bailey, associate dean of clinical affairs at the UNM School of Medicine. “UNM Hospital is well-prepared to handle any situation requiring infection control, and our staff demonstrated that preparedness this week, performing superbly in following the necessary protocols that are in place to protect our patients, visitors and staff.” The hospital won't be releasing any additional information regarding the patient's care or test results. Just like Germany and others they probebly tested for other more common infections as well that have quicker results and if it comes back positive for one then they can tentatively rule out Ebola until the official results.

This government is so untrustworthy I don't believe anything they say. Lying is what they do best!
If there was a case in the US I don't believe they would tell us until it was out of control or out of the bag. They are afraid of mass hysteria. I also think it's suspicious that not one other country has even one case? |

Welcome, jacksdad :) Also, a man who came from W.Africa to Sacramento is doing a 21 day self-quarantine as a precautionary measure, he's a CalPers computer engineer and his work gave the ok. He has no symptoms, but I guess he feels more at ease doing a self-quarantine.

There is probably no cover up, except if cases have popped up in China, which is virtually the only place keeping dead silent about it all, and who are also notorious for covering up outbreaks. I'm guessing we'll see cases pop up outside Africa depending on what happens to Nigeria. If it engulfs Nigeria and Mali as it is Guinea, sierra leone and Liberia, then we're probably talking sporadic global spread after that. |

I agree, I thought it was admirable of him to do that. Also maybe he has work from home opportunities so he won't be losing any wages. Highly doubt anyone else would be willing to do that though. |
