Ok so on one map Colorado is low and the other it is widespread. Which is correct?

Flumom, I will attempt to explain this but there are others that can explain it better than I.  The map with the reds & greens indicate cases of influenza like illnesses.  The map with the browns & yellows indicate geographical spread.  So you could have a state that is red in the top map (indicating a high level of cases being reported) but only be orange or yellow in the other map (indicating that while cases are high they are not all spread out all over the state but rather concentrated within one area... ie, regional or local)

That is why you could also have a state that is in the greens on the top map but be brown in the bottom map... indicating they've not had very many cases reported but the ones they have had are all spread out throughout the state.  This is the case for Colorado the week ending the 13th, cases reported were low but they were coming from all across the state making the geographical spread "widespread".

Texas has the worst case scenario... a lot of cases being reported & from every nook & cranny.

Does that makes sense?

It feels like the flu often moves East to West. Is it due to weather only or just some coincidence?
Be prepared! It may be time....^_^v

Could it be due to such massive #'s of ppl in the east?
More density of population = easier spread? Then spreads out from there?
Would think a lot more flights etc into east then west (due to higher pop) so maybe it catch's ride to there, infects ppl there, then decides to 'go west young man' to find more hosts??? Would the higher humidity on the East coast also play a role?

This is a very cool set of maps - THANK YOU Jen 147 for posting, think I'll go search, see if Canada has anything similar...

Well so much for the humidity maybe being a factor - we're as dry as stink here (humidity wise) and we (Prairies -Alberta/Saskatchewan/western slice of Manitoba) Alberta has the most 'widespread' activity - but again...more ppl in AB and more 'affluence' so more ppl traveling etc...

For Canadians on here - here is an 'animated' map for weeks 47-51

Geographical spread map is not working on the cdc.gov site.  But here is report in words:

During week 1, the following influenza activity was reported:

  • Widespread influenza activity was reported by Guam and 46 states (Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming).
  • Regional influenza activity was reported by Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and three states (Alabama, Georgia, and Hawaii).
  • Local activity was reported by the District of Columbia and one state (Alaska).

Someone like Dutch Josh would be better qualified to decode graphs, Jen. He has way more patience than me, and I have a hard time seeing them these days (couldn't post today until I found my glasses...)

Glad to see TN is finally showing some kind of improvement.  It's been really bad here this year so far.  My MIL has H3N2 right now & says it's worse than chemo.

This shows quite a spike in cases (worse than last year, but not as bad as two years ago)....will it quickly fall back or not?
