The first Ebola case has been diagnosed in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced today.

Although American Ebola patients have been treated in the United States prior to this diagnosis, they all contracted Ebola in West Africa. Ebola has killed 2,917 people and infected 3,346 others since the outbreak began in March.

The CDC will hold a press conference at 5:30 p.m. with the Dallas and Texas state health officials as well as officials from Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. According to the Associated Press, a patient arrived at the Dallas hospital on Monday with possible Ebola symptoms and recent travel history to West Africa. The patient was being kept in isolation until the CDC could confirm the diagnosis.

Not a US Citizen... I'm assuming because he was asked multiple times & kept saying was visiting family here in this country.

Just curious folks. My husband and I heard this news conference on the radio. Did any one see it on tv? If so what was the demeanor of the participants? Were they cool and collected or nervous? How many of us here believe the stuff TPTB are shoveling?< ="cosymantecnisbfw" co="cs" id="SILOBFWID" style="width: 0px; height: 0px; display: block;">

I saw it.  The head of the CDC did most of the talking & he really wanted to get across that they were going to stop this in its tracks.  He seemed very confident.  Repeated over & over... this is what we do.

The actual Dr's from the hospital were not there they were live on the phone though & they said they were very prepared to treat this guy & had just had a meeting a week before the patient presented over what to do in case of having an ebola patient.  Every one presented themselves very confident & wanting to reassure.  They did seem to take it very seriously though & not brush it under the rug, at least that was how I felt watching it.

Welcome!

From your post this individual was in a hospital while symptomatic and released. He was probably told to go home and drink lots of fluids. Which means he/she stopped at the store. Just think of all of the people exposed while they had symptoms. Containment is most likely an illusion.

Yes, the one Dr. said he was released because in the beginning ebola presents like other infections.  My own words... they missed it first time.  He did make a point to say that when the patient came back the second time he was ASKED where are you traveling from & he said Liberia & the patient was immediately put into isolation.  Why didn't they ask the first time.

They claim that the number of contacts or possible exposures were "a handful" limited to "a few family members & one, two or three community contacts".

We knew in the hours leading up to this announcement that they already knew. The person from the Texas State end said that we will release the results today whether positive or negative. That indicates to me that there has been a conflict between Texas State at least and the federal government on whether of not to go public. I think the Feds said no and Texas said up yours so only then did CDC come out. In any case they clearly laid out at conference the probability that this person, probably African, has infected family members. Friedan just prepped us for clusters.

Sorry... Why would that necessarily mean they would stop at a store?
Interested....

This is a perfect example of how it won't be as easy as many think or hope to keep case after case at bay here.

I would have stopped at a store (though obviously NOT if I knew I had Ebola).
On any given day there is no juice, Theraflu, cough syrup etc. at my house.
Many people make stops after seeing a doctor, because it makes sense to combine errands.

Milk, soda, bread?

Perhaps this guy also went to the movies, out to dinner, and stopped for gas since the time he was home. The possibilities are endless and the CDC isn't about to "panic" everyone by telling us.

Prairie One- I was just thinking if he had already been sick for two days, given the fact that most people don't have a bunch of extras on hand, they would probably need a few things. I know when I have a sick family member I tend to get things I think they would like. I didn't realize it was such a confusing concept.

Don't forget that he developed symptoms on 9/24, but wasn't admitted to the hospital until 9/28. He was infectious for 4 solid days, and perhaps 5 depending on when he went to the hospital on 9/28.

Now that we are entering the flu season, we have the perfect storm because hospitals will assume that everyone has the flu, when other people could have already been infected or when others flying out of W. Africa bring the disease with them.

Standard question from here on out in every ER/clinic & Dr's office... along with "Are you allergic to anything that you know of"... should be have you traveled to/from Africa or been in contact with anyone who has.  If they can ask you all those other questions they can ask that.

Actually, knowing tx as i do, I suspect it was the other way around: fed wanting to release info, tx not wanting to.

Thank you all for the kind welcome, the info on this site is very helpful.

I agree with stopping for errands when you've just come from the Dr's or ER.  Everyone does it.  Question is, was he driving himself or having a family member drive him.  He was visiting here after all.  Times that I've been very sick I've not felt like going inside Walgreens or where ever so I'd wait in the car while hubby went in to get me ibuprofen Gatorade RX filled etc.  So it just depends.  Any number of scenarios could have happened.

Hi Jen147, I agree, if he were visiting family and traveling in from Africa - AND sick, I would guess the family would be driving him around and taking care of him. If he were feeling bad enough to go to the hospital the first time, hopefully the person wasn't out all over Dallas. Seems reasonable to think he might not have felt up to it. I could imagine going to a drugstore or grocery store, but likely not hitting the mall or going to the movies.

Looks like the ambulance crew is now quarantined. Glad to hear they pulled the ambulance from service.

"The Dallas Fire-Rescue ambulance crew who transported the infected man to the hospital is being quarantined and monitored for Ebola symptoms, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings told NBC 5, and the ambulance used to transport the man has been pulled from service."
