For you tech survivalists, Sprint now offers a phone that also provides a wireless internet connection.  As long as you have a car charger adapter, you would always have access to the internet at all times.  However, these phones are quite expensive at approximately $400.00.

With regard to cell phones, there is no range when sending text messages so as long as you have a battery charger (car), cell phones could come in handy in a crisis.

And no, I have no affiliation with Sprint.   LOL

My laptop uses a Sony GC83 air card. Works like a modem using cell towers, so I can take my laptop anywhere there is a Cingular cell tower.
Rather expensive at $90 a month tho.

Hi Albert, I could not justify this expense. I will not like being cut off from communicating and finding out what is happening.

Those may be good options for some, and it is good to have more than one means of communication.  I have both cable and dial up available.

http://www.gcn.com/online/vol1_no1/37515-1.html
Officials from both firms explained why their telephone service [cellular]
failed in the days following the hurricane’s arrival.

Verizon Wireless’ cellular phone coverage for Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi had dipped to less than 50 percent of its full coverage, according to Melone. About 6 percent of BellSouth’s customer base—about 1.2 million users—lost landline telephone usage.

http://www.drj.com/drworld/content/w2_045.htm
These changes mean that telecommunication systems are now more vulnerable to power quality problems. The electronic circuits are more susceptible to noise pulses than voice communication  [added failure possibilities as technology gets more complicated]

http://www.wert-help.org/HomelandSecurity.pdf
Article lists many pros and cons of wireless and cell phones, but one point; Homes should have a corded phone as an emergency back-up, because the batteries of cordless phones can run out.  (Land lines do not require that there be any power in the house, only at the phone company).

Dlugose,

Good advice!
For communication needs, when the cell phones are out, text messaging works well and Nextel's Direct Connect Radio phone worked beautifully. Many La. businesses have now mandated all key employees to use direct connect cell phone services.  And that's how the majority of people  with New Orleans area codes communitcated with each other for many many weeks.  After being allowed back in the city, didn't have cable, water, gas, electricity...but the good ol' Bell South phone system still worked!  Also, people with cable  Internet service were out of service for months...some still are. But those with Internet service through the telephone co. were able to log on (using a generator for power, of course).
Everyone really should make sure they have a rotary dial phone in the event of power outages. We are like you...we have both. Being able to communicate with loved ones is important, especially when you don't know how they are doing.

Sherrie, people can not play tricks by making our forums disappear.   You need to try clearing your cookies if you're having problems.  If you're the only one seeing an anomaly, then it's coming from your end.

Hoosiermom, I've been thinking about how we can do that as well.   We have a very fairly tech savvy computer guy that might be able to figure out a way to transfer the text messaging data to the forum.  We will have figure that out.   Thanks for the ideas and input.

Also, thanks for the support.

OT-  Sherrie was correct.  Somebody posted this morning that the priority preps forum was missing, and in fact it was.  When you have a lot of forum topics it can create some instability in some areas.  Anyway, we fixed the problem.

Just a thought, if everyone is locked up and using the internet for a variety of reasons (communications, telecommuting, etc...), how do we all know that it'll hold up? Think about it, the internet is heavily used as it is, but no every household in the country is using it at the same time.  It is possible it could simply shut down.
The only way to grow is to take a chance.

I think its almost certain the internet will be sketchy, at best...millions around the world trying to work from home, contact family, check the news...it has to collapse.
