HI, just came back from a successful purchasing run and thought I would share it with everyone. We have both a $1 and a $.99 cent store in our area. They tend to stock different items. The $.99 cent store today was a big hit. My husband is a diabetic and heart patient, so proper nutrition is extremely important. Since the "low-carb" fad has died out, I noticed that a lot of the foods have disappeared from the shelves. Not a problem, as long as the stores are fully stocked. Found a ton of "low-carb" today, including some I had never seen before! Bread, makes 2 loaves per box. Chocolate cake, blueberry muffins, several different kinds of pasta, ketchup, soups, spaghetti sauce. Bought a ton more spices. SO MUCH CHEAPER!!! I also wanted to thank the kind people who posted the food-lists. Has helped me enormously in showing me the items I havn't even thought of. I will include them in the newsletter I am preparing for my neighbors, friends and family. By the way, did you guys see that  DHS has a separate site JUST for H5N1  and is acknowledging  that we will have system failures? Interesting that they put it on the web, but don't talk about it on the news.

There is a lot of evidence that a high fiber diet can help diabetes, do a search on high fiber diet and diabetes for further information. I also believe oat bran was mentioned in some of the studies. Beans, oatbran, amaranth and other high fiber foods may be of benefit. As I recall the amount of fiber is 50 grams daily.

Much of this dietary information is also available in acouple of books - "The Okinawa Program" and the "Okinawa Diet Plan" by Wilcox, Wilcox & Suzuki ... This deals along with longevity and hormonal issues - diabetes is a hormone illness.  Very interesting, insomuch that when my father got the diabetes II, the whole family decided to change our own diet, exercise more so he wouldn't feel alone going thru the illness on his own - what a change for the rest of us!

Femvet,
My husband is a diabetic also (type 2), and we got a great piece of info (before I became aware of BF) for him straight out of Diabetic book from dr.s office. Keep a good supply of liquor (any will do, it's the alcohol that is important) because if he has to eat some higher carbs, then you fix him A (one) drink. The liver starts throwing out alcohol nearly as soon as you drink it. The side effect is that while it is doing this, it also gets rid of some sugar. Check with your doc, I don't know how alcohol would affect his other meds. Jo
