Three new cases of Ebola emerged in Liberia on Friday, a setback for a country that had been declared free of the disease on September 3 and also a blow for the wider region as it struggles to end an epidemic that has killed around 11,300 people.

The first of the new patients was a 10-year-old boy who lived with his parents and three siblings in Paynesville, a suburb east of the capital Monrovia, said Minister of Health Minister Bernice Dahn. Two direct family members have also since tested positive, officials said.

All six family members, as well as other high risk contacts, are in care at an Ebola Treatment Unit in Paynesville, she said.

comment: it is unlikely that Africa will ever be free of Ebola. It is just a matter of time before we see new strains a spread of the is disease outside of Africa.

^Thanks!  These intervals between pandemics/outbreaks are always interesting.  We are learning much more about the Ebola virus than we had in all of the previous outbreaks combined.

Also, you are correct, Africa will never be free of Ebola just as the USA will never be free of rabies, West Nile Virus etc.  Ebola is now part of the ecology of Africa, and likely has been for thousands of years.

As long as folks are eating bats & bushmeat, we'll always have these outbreaks.  Now, if Ebola virus can persist in asymptomatic people as does herpes, HIV etc., things will get interesting around here.  Persistence of the virus in certain tissues seems certain based upon what I'm reading.

It'll simmer away in West Africa for the foreseeable future just like it has for decades in the Congo. It's entrenched and they'd better be prepared for future outbreaks, but I don't think West Africa will ever see the likes of the last outbreak again. Now if it shows up elsewhere in Africa, we might well see a scenario similar to the one we recently witnessed - although I doubt it'll be as widespread and out of control. As inept as the response was at times, I find it hard to believe that some hard lessons weren't learned.
