Ebola Outbreak's Scale 'Vastly Underestimated'

The UN health agency says evidence suggests the magnitude of west Africa's ebola outbreak has been underestimated.

The number of deaths and confirmed cases of ebola in west Africa has been vastly underestimated, the World Health Organisation (WHO) says.

The death toll from the outbreak currently stands at 1,069 people. There have been 1,975 confirmed, probable or suspected cases.

The majority of the cases have occurred in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Four deaths have also been reported in Nigeria.

But the WHO said there is evidence that the number of reported cases underestimates the scale of the suffering.

"The outbreak is expected to continue for some time. WHO's operational response plan extends over the next several months," the WHO said in a statement.

"Staff at the outbreak sites see evidence that the numbers of reported cases and deaths vastly underestimate the magnitude of the outbreak."

It comes after several does of the experimental drug ZMapp arrived in Liberia this week.

Officials say only three people will receive the drug, which could prove life-saving, ineffective or even harmful.

The Liberian government previously said two doctors would receive ZMapp, but it remains unclear who else will be treated.

The ebola outbreak was first identified in Guinea in March and has since spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

The spread of the disease has overwhelmed strained health systems in west Africa.

As there is no licenced treatment for Ebola - which is transmitted by contact with bodily fluids - doctors have turned to the limited supply of untested drugs to treat some cases.

Two Americans and one Spaniard have so far received ZMapp.

The Americans have since shown signs of improvement, however it remains unclear what role the drug has played in their recovery. The Spaniard died within days.

As the human cost continues to rise, there are http:/ews.sky.com/story/1318646/economies-at-significant-risk-from-ebola - concerns about the wider economic threat caused by the outbreak.

The Moody's ratings agency warned on Thursday that the virus could have "significant economic" ramifications for a number of west African countries.

This news report seem to be deceptive. They are using the words "vastly under estimated"  inferring that the current numbers are wrong. I think the WHO underestimated the initial threat... We already know that.

Maybe the WHO are saying the current numbers are wrong, but I cant find any reference to these statements.

I don't believe a news organisation would ever fabricate a news story ;)

The creators of this BIOWEAPoN do have its antdote. that is certain. but since POPULATION REDUCTION is the goal? We will not see much of that antidote anytime soon.
WHO is squarely behind the scandal- hence their "puzzling" reprimand of those parties that attempt to contain the spread by the FIRST & BEST rule of procedure-  quarantine of affected areas.  THEY ARE ACTUALLY TRYING TO HALT THIS, to ensure the virus' spread. Their motives couldnt be clearer. THeir downplaying this crisis - thus facilitating its pandemic potential is realized - is NOT incompetence.  It is part of the Plan. No accident.

Wake up world.  The real Death OverLords are exposing themselves for what they really are.

Ebola ain't a very good Bio-Weapon. Not this form anyway.

If the "death overlords" wanted to let rip they have some very funky stuff in their arsenal. Trust me.

There is a very clear path with Ebola's evolution. Its well studied and documented. Its clearly not a BioWeapon

just a pain in the arse

Okay just found it myself too. Cheers.

Yes they do say it.

I don't know what to read into the statement as it refers to "elsewhere"  the the cases are vastly underestimated. Maybe they are saying its spread further than thought an has some hidden numbers.

I dont believe this is as big a statement as its made out to be by the media.

what do yall think?

My 2 cents.....

The big picture says...governments and agency's generally downplay situations like this, problems are generally easier for those entity's to solve without alarm or panic. That is why the WHO always is "low" key.

For them to articulate using that language means to me, that there is a much, much worse situation brewing than mainstream media is reporting.

We see from local media in the affected areas that whole villages are affected, bodies in the streets,healthcare workers leaving their posts, hospitals closing, patients being neglected, people running away from red cross people ETC;

Another interesting observation is the fact that they quarantined huge areas just a few days ago, and now world food bank is calling for immediate air drops of food.....if the prospect of people dieing of starvation (from quarantine) is secondary to the danger posed on the ground by the spread of this, then it is most certainly very bad.

And lastly, I am not a scare monger...but i am seriously bothered about the mode of transmission. I do not like the double talk from WHO-CDC Verse the evidence on the ground. I am not convinced that there is not some other transmission route like limited air transmission.
The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself......FDR
