Bird Flu: Medical Experts Deny Human Infection
(Lagos) excerpt
February 11, 2006
Lagos Proprietors of Medical and Health Clinics and Centre at Jaji and its environs in Kaduna state have refuted allegations of wide spread of bird flu virus to human beings in the area. A cross-section of the proprietors who spoke to the Newsmen at the weekend denied ever admitting or treating a patient with symptoms of bird flu virus in recent time. The federal government on Wednesday confirmed the outbreak of the virus among birds at Sambawa farms near Jaji in Kaduna. The Chief Medical Officer in-charge of Jaji Comprehensive Health
Centre, the biggest civilian health institution in the area, Alhaji
Mustapha Suleiman, said nobody had ever been hospitalised at the centre
for bird flu related illness in the past months. http://allafrica.com/stories/200602130401.html |

Business As Usual As Bird Flu Hits Africa (Nairobi)
COLUMN
Chege Mbitiru / There And About Last week, Nigeria scored a first. Nigerians aren't celebrating. A Paris-based outfit delivered bad news. It's called World Organisation for Animal Health. It has an acronym, OIE. The outfit is reputable. The news was that a "highly pathogenic" strain of H5N1 bird flu virus had arrived in the country's north. "Pathogenic" means "able to cause disease." In this case the virus spread lethally and fast. OEI spokeswoman Maria Zampaglione said in a statement analysis
continued in order to "define the degree of genetic homology with the
currently known H5N1 strains." That's tracing the virus' genetic
lineage. It's immaterial to the outbreak. http://allafrica.com/stories/200602130430.html
