Jen147 that is why I asked what strains are running in the southern hemisphere this flu season. Rickster58 do you know what strains you had this flu season?

Hi FluMom
This years vaccine provided protection against the following three stains: Influenza A California, Influenza A Switzerland and Influenza B Phuket. The strain that is doing all the damage is B Brisbane flu which was in the vaccine 2 years ago |

Influenza Activity + SurveillanceSurveillance of Influenza activity in Australia & New Zealand This report provides a summary of surveillance data collected from around Australia and New Zealand. Regional reporting in some areas ceases when flu activity is low (out of season). Please note that the vast majority of people do not get tested for influenza and that there may also be some delays in reporting confirmed influenza cases. Therefore data presented here maybe underestimating influenza activity. AustraliaCommonwealth Department of Health & AgeingThere have been a total of 67,249 laboratory confirmed notifications of Influenza in Australia at the end of 10 September 2015. • QLD: 21,631 This is more than double the cases from a report I generated using the Australian National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System today of 27,523 cases from data ending July 31st 2015. http://www9.health.gov.au/cda/source/rpt_1_sel_a.cfm Medclinician |

It has been nearly impossible for me to get flu data from Australia. According to this map put out by WHO more than 30% of the people tested in Australia have the flu.
Is this true? Need some help here Aussies. http://www.who.int/influenza/surveillance_monitoring/updates/2015_09_21_influenza_update_246.jpg?ua=1 comment: looks like 30% to me? What do you think? Why are we not hearing more about this in the media? Medclinician |

In Australia, influenza activity seemed to be past the peak except in
South Australia where it continued to rise with predominantly influenza B
viruses followed by influenza A(H3N2) virus detections. In New Zealand,
influenza activity may have peaked in the second week of August with
influenza A(H3N2) and B viruses predominating during the season. ILI
activity was still above the seasonal threshold but below the alert
threshold.
comment: As was noted before according to the latest WHO figures, 30% of those tested in Australia have the with the B viruses accounting for the most cases. The Flu season in Australia should be winding down and for it still to be this high is significant. Medclinician |

Sometimes it really seems I am the only one on the net tracking this. This current October 15, 2015 with still 30% of the specimens in Australia positive for flu. This is a WHO map quite different from what is being put out there as to the flu season winding down. A large part of this is B strain - could use some help here in explaining why we are seeing these numbers if the outbreak is over. this is what is coming out of Australia reports http://isg.org.au/index.php/influenza-activity-surveillance/ Laboratory surveillance – the proportion of respiratory samples positive for influenza was moderate at 12.4%, and continues to trend down. I am seeing 21-30% on this WHO map. Any comments from Kiwis as to the recent flu levels? It looks from the map you may be seeing A H3 there. Medclinician |
