This year, the flu shot is likely to be ineffective in the US, UK and Canada, the expert warns.
By admin - September 30, 2019 05 share Influenza expert says World Health Organization may have been mistaken about which influenza strain will be the strongest in the Northern Hemisphere, suggesting that the vaccine might be This year, the flu vaccine may be ineffective, warns one of the leading experts. Dr. Danuta Skowronski, a flu expert at the University of British Columbia, told Stat News that this year's flu shot for the Northern Hemisphere, including the United States, Britain and Canada, is likely to be a “mismatch." |

Hopefully the match will be OK - WHO delayed their recommendation by a month, meaning production is much later. The article is about Finland, so maybe I will qualify (by turning an exulted age) by the time our local health post gets the flu.
The nasal spray for children is news to me. Any one have any idea how good it is? I am not surprised at the high uptake amongst the young, as when swine flu hit more children were permanently damaged by nasty additions to the vaccine (to make them cheaper) than died of the flu - so flu injections for children got a very bad name here. Choosing the flu vaccine might be a sinister sign for this winter
By HELEN BRANSWELL @ HelenBranswell30 SEPTEMBER 2019 Flu shot close up JOE RADLE / GETTY IMAGES It was never easy to predict which flu viruses would make people sick next winter. And there is reason to believe that two of the four choices made last winter for the vaccine for this upcoming season could be false. Twice a year, influenza experts meet at the World Health Organization to study surveillance data submitted by countries around the world to try to predict which strains will become the most dominant. A meeting on the selection of strains in the Northern Hemisphere is held in late February; The meeting in the southern hemisphere takes place at the end of September. The choices officials made last week for the next Southern Hemisphere vaccine suggest that two of the four viruses in the Northern Hemisphere vaccine that doctors and pharmacies currently require from people to receive may not be optimal protection this winter. . These are two types of influenza A / H3N2 virus and B / Victoria influenza virus. The strain selection committee concluded that the H3N2 and B / Victoria viruses needed to be updated, as those used in the Northern Hemisphere vaccine do not match the strains of those viruses that are currently dominant. Influenza epidemiologist Dr. Danuta Skowronski described the meaning of these two changes in one word: "inconsistency." T-cell vaccine can save us |

I confess I have no idea yet how accurate the match is this year. I know even if somewhat off it provides some protection, so it is still a good idea - just not the brilliant one it was last year.
I suspect (I am close to certain) we are in for a tough flu year; let me explain. I do not qualify for a free vaccine, usually, so I have to beg the Doctor's surgery for one. When they are not expecting much, I am refused. When they are expecting an average year, I get one after pleading. When they are expecting a really nasty year they offer me. This year they have widened the goalposts for the vaccine and thousands of primary school children now qualify - and they offered me too. That is the furthest I have ever seen them move. This, I accept, is not exactly conclusive proof of approaching doom, but It worries me. |
