ABUJA (AFP) - A Greek duck hunter was in the hospital waiting to hear if he will become the first European stricken with lethal bird flu that has killed scores of people in Asia as Nigeria admitted it was struggling to cope with Africa's first known outbreak.

After the often-lethal H5N1 strain turned up in wild birds in four southern European countries in recent days, the European Union attempted to reassure people the threat was under control even as the disease continued to spread.
