Levygoddess, I took this from my Excel sheet. I do not have a template I do not know how to do that I just cut and paste when a new page is needed with the titles. I am sure you can figure out from the example how I have done this the C2, C4 means cabinet2 or 4 and Fur means that is in our furnace closet.

As you can see I group everything by date only 20 green beans April 2009
15 green beans June 2010. Best by dates are most important because it tells you what to use first but if something does not have a Best By Date I use my Purchased On Date.

If you need more infor I check this blog everyday and everynight so just add to this post. Hope this helps!

FluMom - I'm impressed. I have to go through my preps again and rearrange them by date. I wonder what the realistic shelf life of canned goods is? I always make sure I get undamaged cans (even my kid knows to check for that now) as a dent near the ends can cause them to leak.

Thank you jacksdad, I worked hard on this list.

Shelf life is longer than on the can as long as you store in a 70 degree or cooler basement. I accidently used a can of peas this year that was Best By 2006 and they were a little mushy but they did not kill me.

DO NOT EVER EAT FROM A CAN THAT THE PRODUCT SPURTS OUT WHEN FIRST OPENED!

To make sure you kill anything really bad boil the product if the can is really old.

Hope my list helps people...excel is on most computers and it is a great way to keep track of your preps.

They say if you dip the ends of your cans in wax to prevent rust they have a very very long shelf life..I'll try to find the web site again as he even demo how to do it.

We have no rust in Colorado too dry. But I bet in the high humidity areas this would be a very good idea.

I wonder if dipping in wax will "make the seal better"?   Better seal, no air, means longer shelf life.

Topic: Are My Canned Foods Still Safe?

Are My Canned Foods Still Safe?

Listen to the article

Commercially canned foods should be stored in a cool, dry place for best retention of nutrients and quality. Avoid storing next to kitchen ranges, furnaces, radiators, and steam pipes. Also protect against freezing temperatures.

What if they freeze? Is the food safe? Yes, usually. Food expands during freezing. Check the seams of the can after thawing for signs of leakage. Also check the ends to make sure they are flat again. Some breakdown in texture can occur during freezing. The food may be more mushy. If the food is to be mixed with several other foods and cooked, the texture will probably not be an issue.

Recommended storage for canned foods is usually a year. If canned properly, the food is safe indefinitely. However, nutritional value and quality may be reduced. Poor storage conditions can also reduce the quality.

Once a can is opened, the food becomes perishable. Refrigerate or freeze immediately any unused food. It is best to store food in glass or plastic containers. Acid foods especially can pick up the metal taste from a can easily.

Home canned foods should be stored in cool dry places as well. Rules for storage are the same as for commercially canned food. BE SURE the foods were canned under currently approved canning methods. If in doubt, throw it out. Do not taste the food at all. Check with your county extension office for current food preservation guides.

Take a look at the following article that was published by the FDA:
http://www.confederatecolonel.com/articles/cannedfood/cannedfood.shtml

The basic idea of this article is that properly canned foods last a LOT longer than is generally believed.

Here's a snip from the article:

Among the canned food items retrieved from the Bertrand in 1968 were brandied peaches, oysters, plum tomatoes, honey, and mixed vegetables. In 1974, chemists at the National Food Processors Association (NFPA) analyzed the products for bacterial contamination and nutrient value. Although the food had lost its fresh smell and appearance, the NFPA chemists detected no microbial growth and determined that the foods were as safe to eat as they had been when canned more than 100 years earlier.

Don't trash your older canned foods!

Hi FluMom, just got back from Camping at the KOA in Johnson near Buena Vista, CO. It was so nice in the 70's as Texas is in the upper 90's. Had a great time with the M715 Zone Jeep Club.

Well you really need to go to the mountains in the winter for cold.

It is so dry here on the Front Range the cold does not feel cold. I usually do not wear a coat unless it is snowing.

I am originally from the mid west and the big difference is the sun shines all the time in Colorado. So when you want some sun in the winter come to Colorado.

I have a Excel program with templates for all preparing supplies, IE, food, water, medical, sick room, and general supplies.  It is Office 97 excel ver.

I took the Mormon Church list for 1 year supply of food.  It gives you a 2300 calorie a day diet.  It works very well.

To get a copy so all can use it - - I have two choices.

1.   Albert can I import a excel program -  maybe as a archive file at this site?

2.  Give out my E-Mail address to all and have interested parties e-mail me with their address to get a copy sent to them.

Albert I wait your answer.
