The Georgian Kingdom reached its zenith in the 12th to early 13th centuries. This period has been widely termed as Georgia's Golden Age or Georgian Renaissance during the reign of David the Builder and Queen Tamar.

This early Georgian renaissance, which preceded its European analogue, was characterized by the flourishing of romantic- chivalric tradition, breakthroughs in philosophy, and an array of political innovations in society and state organization, including religious and ethnic tolerance. The Golden age of Georgia left a legacy of great cathedrals, romantic poetry and literature, and the epic poem "The Knight in the Panther's Skin". The struggle against the Seljuk invaders was led by the David the Builder, who employed tens of thousands Kipchak soldiers and settled them, in 1118, in his kingdom.

The Ushguli is dominated by typical Svan defensive towers, most dating back to the 9th-12th centuries[23]The revival of the Georgian Kingdom was short-lived however, in 1226 Tblisi was captured by Mingburnu and the Kingdom was eventually subjugated by the Mongols in 1236 (see Mongol invasions of Georgia). Thereafter, different local rulers fought for their independence from central Georgian rule, until the total disintegration of the Kingdom in the 15th century.

Georgia was subjected, between 1386 and 1404, to several disastrous invasions by Timur. Neighbouring kingdoms exploited the situation and from the 16th century, the Persian Empire and the Ottoman Empire subjugated the eastern and western regions of Georgia, respectively.

U.S. warship leaves Sevastopol after protests

Ukrainian customs officers who boarded the ship and met the commander said they had been prepared to lay on buses for the U.S. crew to give them a tour of the city, but apart from a few officers, no one left the vessel.

Tensions between Russia and the West have been exacerbated by the build up in the Black Sea of U.S. and NATO naval vessels delivering humanitarian aid to Georgia. In an apparent response, Russia sent a group of warships last week, including the Moskva missile cruiser, to Sukhumi, the capital of Abkhazia

One of the most notable events involving the city is the Siege of Sevastopol (1854–1855) carried out by the British, French, Sardinian, and Turkish troops during the Crimean War, which lasted for 11 months.

Despite its efforts, the Russian army had to leave its stronghold and evacuate over a pontoon bridge to the north shore of the inlet. The Russians had to sink their entire fleet to prevent it from falling into the hands of the enemy and at the same time to block the entrance of the Western ships into the inlet.

When the enemy troops entered Sevastopol, they were faced with the ruins of a formerly glorious city. A panorama of the siege created by Franz Roubaud and which was restored after its destruction in 1942 is housed in a specially constructed circular building in the city. It portrays the situation in the height of the siege, on 18 June 1855.

Putin pledges measured response to NATO warships in Black Sea

 excerpt-

The U.S. has delivered millions of dollars of what it says is humanitarian aid to its ally Georgia. Russia has however questioned the nature of the deliveries.

"If the talk is about humanitarian aid to one of the parties to the conflict, I believe that...it should go to the victims of aggression, that is to South Ossetia," Putin said, adding that it was unclear why warships were needed to carry humanitarian aid.

Well... Turkey let in three ships for aid to Georgia..   Not exactly an armada.

There isn't much for the Government to say.  Nations have to run on oil and it can't be disrupted.   When there is unspeakable firepower floating near by and the worry is a defensive missile site in Poland?    The worry should be .... "Oh my God, we sold NUK missiles to How Many rogue nations?"  Talk about messing with one's own economy.
Yer not livin in a bubble now....the Russian Ruble and stock market have to be tended to at all times...fun isn't it?

The cold war stunk.  Is there any way Mr. Putin can turn it around?

Of Course.  Russia is not on the list.  He could make Russia a shining example to all the countries around.  By extending his friendship through cooperation.  Russia has a lot to offer.  They are one Nation very rich in resources.

Imagine the shock of  15 of our United States declaring themselves independant.
All of a sudden California, Florida, Maine start electing their own presidents.  Florida won't sell us their oranges any more because the Canadians struck a deal.  Then the Texans and the Mexicans start a war.  Texans flee into the neighboring country of Arizona where camps are set up.

I think they are coping pretty well over there in the few yrs since.
Russia is not poor.  China invited everyone in to set up businesses and asked questions and see how well they are doing, they own a bunch of our debt.

 ............................

I have heard two News groups (Real News and Democracy Now) with videos on YouTube use the phrase...

NATO has encircled Russia.

Do they not have a map?  Spring for one people.  Not my kind of news.

I don't see Russia being encircled any time soon.

EU wants truth about Ossetian war

excerpt-

EU Foreign Ministers are calling for an international inquest into identifying who was responsible for starting the conflict in South Ossetia.

French FM Bernard Kushner said U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney was not Americas best ambassador

"The very fact that Americans didn't find anything else to support their failed ally - Mr. Saakashvili - other than sending Mr. Cheney to the region, who is incredibly unpopular in the world, who is associated with the war in Iraq, with all these neo-conservative, black-and-white visions of the world, who was accused of corruption - remember the Halliburton affair in Iraq. And if they wanted, if the Bush administration really wanted to consolidate the international community behind the United States in criticising Russia, I think they should find somebody else and not send Mr. Cheney," Kushner said.

......................................................................................................................

note..

And someone like Bernard Kushner, who made his name as the founder of Doctors Without Borders and has been sitting around looking for a cause, never was really tied to the Socialist Party, so he embraced the opportunity to become foreign minister.

Stop Russias Unlawful Military Invasion in Sovereign Georgia
.
To:  President of the United States; Congress of the United States; European Council; President of the European Commission; NATO Secretary General; Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe

Since August 8, 2008 the whole world has been witnessing Russia’s open military invasion into the independent and sovereign Republic of Georgia. Thousands of soldiers and tanks of the Russian Federation have breached the internationally recognized borders of Georgia and have been fiercely attacking Georgian troops. Furthermore, Russian warplanes have violated the Georgian airspace and carried out air strikes at different Georgian cities outside the conflict zone. These strikes have caused hundreds of casualties among civilian population.

The main reason for Russian invasion is Georgia’s close ties with the United States and the European Union countries and its willingness to build free and democratic society. Russian invasion is a desperate move to curb Georgia’s aspiration to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union.

This outrageous military aggression by Russia unequivocally reveals its imperialistic aspirations. Irresponsible incursion by Russian troops into sovereign Georgia can be perceived as nothing less than Moscow’s strong nostalgia for the Soviet Union era and zeal for “restoring” its rule in neighboring peaceful countries. By invading Georgia, Russia sends a clear message to the free world that it is ready to brutally punish any of its neighboring countries that choose to embrace the democratic and humanistic values, which the United States and the European Union countries are standing for.

The moment of truth has come for the United States and the European Union. Georgia needs HELP from its American and European friends to stop Russian invasion. Failing to react to Russian blatant military aggression will undermine the future of democracy in the region and beyond. Furthermore, inaction by the United States and the European Union will give a go-ahead to Russia to carry out military aggression elsewhere in its neighborhood in the future.

We are calling on the President of the United States and the Leaders of the European Union Nations to help Georgia and to actively pressure the Russian Government to cease fire and to withdraw its troops from the Sovereign Republic of Georgia.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

Russia's cruel intention - In South Ossetia, I witnessed the worst ethnic cleansing since the war in the Balkans

 Luke Harding
The Guardian, Monday September 1 2008
Article history

excerpt-

After three weeks in Georgia reporting on the war and its aftermath, I find one conversation sticks with me. I had arrived in Karaleti, a Georgian village north of Gori. I had gone there with a group of foreign journalists in a Russian army truck; our ultimate destination was Tskhinvali, in South Ossetia. Several houses along the main road had been burned down; an abandoned Lada lay in a ditch; someone had looted the local school.

Refugees from Karaleti and nearby villages gave the same account: South Ossetian militias had swept in on August 12, killing, burning, stealing and kidnapping. Sasha, our Kremlin minder, however, had a different explanation. "Georgian special commandos burned the houses," he told us. I demurred, pointing out that it was unlikely Georgian special commandos would have burned down Georgian villages north of Tskhinvali, deep inside rebel-held South Ossetia. Sasha's face grew dark; he wasn't used to contradiction. "Those houses suffered from a gas or electricity leak," he answered majestically.

Press Release
August 18th, 2008 - Vienna

Pipeline capacities are more than 100 percent overbooked by potential shippers on a non binding basis

  • In preparation of the Open Season Process the Nabucco Gas Pipeline International GmbH undertook an actual market survey amongst potential shippers on a non binding basis last month.
  • Nabucco capacities are more than 100 Percent overbooked by potential shippers from day one in 2013 on a long term basis.
  • Strong request for transport of natural gas from various gas sources in Central Asia and Middle Eeast.
  • Open Season Process will start, when the legal framework - Exemption Process and Intergovermnental Agreement - is finally established.

August 18th, 2008: Reinhard Mitschek, Managing Director of Nabucco Gas Pipeline International GmbH stated: "This result is a strong positive signal from the European gas market and potential shippers to Nabucco. More than 100 Percent overbooking from day one in 2013 shows huge demand for the provided Nabucco capacities on a strong growing gas market."
The current market sounding last month addressed potential shippers to deliver their interests in Nabucco capacities on a non binding basis. So far Nabucco Gas Pipeline International GmbH has already signed various Letters of Interests with potential shippers. The result of the recent market survey underlines this interest.
"The Open Season Process itself will start after the legal framework for Nabucco - Exemption Process and Intergovernmental Agreement - is finally established. This is an important prerequisition for the project", said Mitschek.
Pioneer project for securing Europe's gas supply

The Nabucco project is one of Europe´s most important energy infrastructure projects to strengthen Europe's security of supply for natural gas, as it contributes substantially to diversifying existing supply routes. The 3,300 km long pipeline connects the large gas deposits in the Caspian region, the Middle East and Egypt with Europe. The investment costs will amount to approximately EUR 7.9 bn. When completed, the pipeline's annual capacity will be 31 bcm. Shareholders nowadays are OMV, MOL, Transgaz, Bulgargaz Holding, BOTAS and RWE.

Supplying EUROPE's Energy

The race is on...

Here is some history/info  on The pipelines Russia loves to hate....

excerpt-

Russia, meanwhile, is shoring up pipeline routes of its own, signing lucrative deals with Central Asian and Balkan states for energy supplies to Europe.

The most recent of these deals is the South Stream pipeline project with Bulgaria, a 550-mile project that can supply Europe with 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually.

The pipeline is expected to come on-stream in 2013 and run from Russia's Black Sea coast under the sea to Bulgaria where it will branch off to different European customers.

Georgia: Russia targets key oil pipeline with over 50 missiles

Russian jets targeted a key oil pipeline with over 50 missiles in a weekend bombing raid in Georgia that raised fears the conflict will tighten Moscow's stranglehold on Europe's energy supplies.

By Damien McElroy in Rustavi, Georgia
Last Updated: 6:22AM BST 11 Aug 2008

excerpt-

Deep craters pockmark the landscape south of the Georgian capital Tblisi in a Y-shaped pattern straddling the British-operated pipeline.

The attack left two deep holes less than 100 yards either side of a pressure vent on the pipeline. Shrapnel of highly engineered munitions litters the area.

There was no visible damage to the pipeline.

Russia's (Gazprom) South Stream Gas Pipeline

SOUTH STREAM: GAZPROM’S NEW MEGA PROJECT

By Vladimir Socor

Monday, June 25, 2007

excerpt-

If carried out, South Stream would partly replace the planned extension of Blue Stream from Turkey through Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, and Austria. Either project is rival to the EU- and U.S.-backed Nabucco transport project for Caspian gas along that same route. South Stream would also rival the proposed extension of the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline through Turkey, which is planned to either be integrated with Nabucco or run from Turkey to Greece and Italy. Apart from running ahead in the transit and downstream races, Russia is running way ahead in the upstream race for Central Asian gas to feed these projects.

This is an excellent map showing the web of transnational piplines-

Oil Exports
Russia’s production growth in the upcoming decade will depend on the availability of viable export routes for the country’s crude oil. Transneft currently has a monopoly over Russia’s pipeline network. Destinations of Russian Oil Exports
During 2007, Russia exported almost 4.4 million bbl/d of crude oil, and over 2 million bbl/d of oil products. Roughly 1.3 million bbl/d were exported via the Druzhba pipeline to Belarus, Ukraine, Germany, Poland, and other destinations in Central and Eastern Europe (including Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic), around 1.3 million bbl/d via the new flagship Primorsk port near St. Petersburg, and around 900,000 bbl/d via the Black Sea.

The majority of Russia’s oil exports transit via Transneft-controlled pipelines, but around 300,000 bbl/d of oil is transported via other non-Transneft-controlled sea routes or via rail. Because of higher world oil prices recently, almost 170,000 bbl/d of Russia's oil is transported via railroad (see table below).

Oil Product Exports and Balance
Most of Russia's product exports consist of fuel oil and diesel fuel, which are used for heating in European countries and, on a small scale, in the United States. Russian oil exports to the U.S. have almost doubled since 2004, rising to over 400,000 bbl/d of crude oil and products in 2007. Updated monthly and annual data are available from EIA’s Petroleum Navigator. Increases in product exports can be attributed to political pressures to maintain refinery operations and higher international oil product prices. A draft plan for the refining sector’s development for 2005-2008 foresees continued increases in the production of high quality light oil products, catalysts and raw material for the petrochemical industry. As production of fuel oil is reduced, local refineries are only meeting about half of the country’s demand for high octane gasoline. Consequently, Russia must import the remainder.

In the last ten years OECD Europe’s reliance on Russian crude exports has grown from around 12 percent of total crude imports to around 29 percent in 2007.

Proposed Oil Pipeline Routes and Pipeline Expansion Projects

North and West: Baltic Pipeline System (BPS) Expansion
The BPS came online in December 2001 carrying crude oil from Russia's West Siberian and Timan-Pechora oil provinces westward to the newly completed port of Primorsk in the Russian Gulf of Finland (see Maps section). The BPS gives Russia a direct outlet to northern European markets, allowing the country to reduce its dependence on transit routes through Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Unfortunately for the Baltic countries, the growth of the BPS has come at considerable cost, as Russian crude which traditionally moved through the Baltic region has been re-routed through the BPS.

Throughput capacity at Primorsk has steadily increased, reaching around 1.5 million bbl/d during 2007 on average. With the usage of larger-sized Baltimax tankers, throughput from the port should continue to increase this year. Although the port’s actual export capacity is allegedly twice as large (around 3 million bbl/d), pipeline capacity to the port keeps exports constrained. The Baltic Pipeline System-II (BPS-II) expansion will add new export outlets to the region, and in May 2008 the Russian government decided that a new line will run to the port of Ust-Luga with a branch going to the Kirishi oil refinery, The first stage of the Baltic Pipeline System (BPS, designed to transport oil from both Russia's oil-producing regions and Kazakhstan, was commissioned in 2001. Transneft has estimated the cost of the second stage to Ust-Luga at around $3.3 billion.

Russian product line operator Transnefteproduct expects began shipments of oil products from Primorsk in May 2008. Exports of around 180,000 bbl/d of products (8.4 million tons/year) were originally expected to begin during the third quarter of 2007.

Related information on energy in the Baltic Sea Region is discussed in the Baltic Sea Region Country Analysis Brief.

North and West: Murmansk Area, Kharyaga-Indiga Pipeline, and Varandei Terminal
International shipping from the Murmansk area has two advantages: the port is ice-free most of the year, and it is deep enough to make shipping to the United States economic without reloading in Europe. Several pipeline proposals connecting the Murmansk area to existing producing areas in the south in the last several years have been met with lukewarm reactions by Transneft (see Maps section) The state-owned company now plans a pipeline to Indiga, 240 miles from the Timan-Pechora producing basin, that is closer but iced over in winter. No timeline has been set for construction. Oil from Timan-Pechora has a lower sulfur content and is lighter than the rest of the Urals blend.

Now, Russian oil is delivered to the Murmansk area by rail, and in 2007 around 270,000 bbl/d of crude oil and products were shipped from the area. Lukoil will complete its $1 billion, 240,000-bbl/d terminal at Varandei in June 2008, which will allow shipments from the northern part of Timan-Pechora. Lukoil’s major source of oil for this terminal will be the Yuzhno-Khylchuyu field where production is expected to begin during the summer of 2008 and rise to 150,000 bbl/d by the end of 2009.

West: Druzhba Pipeline and Adria Reversal Project
Of the 1.3 million bbl/d of oil transported via the Druzhba Pipeline, only around 350,000 bbl/d flows to the south to Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Reversal of the Adria pipeline, which spans between Croatia's port of Omisalj on the Adriatic Sea and Hungary (see map), has been under consideration since the 1990s. The pipeline, which was completed in 1974, was originally designed to load Middle Eastern oil at Omisalj, then pipe it northward to Yugoslavia and on to Hungary. However, given both the Adria pipeline's existing interconnection with the Russian system, and Russia's booming production, the pipeline's operators and transit states have since considered reversing the pipeline's flow, thus giving Russia a new export outlet on the Adriatic Sea. The proposal included expanding the pipeline’s capacity from 100,000 bbl/d to 300,000 bbl/d at a cost of around $320 million.

In 2005, Croatia determined that an environmental impact study of such a reversal was incomplete and not based on enough expert knowledge, thereby killing the proposal. During the Belarus-Russia oil dispute in 2007, Hungary said that it could technically reverse its portion of the pipeline within 20-30 days.

Eastern Siberia Pacific Ocean Pipeline (ESPO): Taishet - Skovorodino - Kozmino Bay
Until 2004, Russian energy officials were unwilling to commit to one of two oil transit pipelines to eastern Asia. President Putin announced that Russia would commit to building a 2,500-mile pipeline route from the Russian city of Taishet to Kozmino Bay, southeast of Nakhodka in two stages. The endpoint for the pipeline was moved from Perevoznaya Bay to protect endangered species there.

The 1,200-mile first stage of the 600,000 bbl/d-pipeline will flow from Taishet to Skovorodino along with a port facility at Kozmino Bay. Although Transneft expects first commissioning of the pipeline by December 2009, as of December 2007 roughly 28% of the first stage of the pipeline route has not been welded and buried. Oil will be shipped via rail to the Pacific coast until the second stage of the pipeline is constructed. China has agreed to finance the 43-mile, 300,000-bbl/d spur from Skovorodino to the Chinese border. Transneft now estimates that the first stage of the project will cost around $12.5 billion, up from an original estimate of around $6 billion. In April 2008, around 1.5 million barrels filled the first stage of the pipeline, which will first operate in reverse mode to bring oil production from East Siberia to refining centers in West Siberia. The second stage of the pipeline will run from Skovorodino to the Pacific Coast, with planned designed capacity of 1.6 million bbl/d.

(Source: US Government, click to enlarge)

The route to Kozmino Bay is significantly more expensive than an alternative route to Daqing, China, since it covers a greater distance and involves more investment. However, the new route will open up a new Pacific port from which Russian oil exports could be shipped by tanker to other Asian markets and possibly even to North America.

The initial stage of the ESPO pipeline will get significant volumes of sweet crude from the TNK-BP-led East Siberian Verkhnechonsk field, in which Rosneft is a partner, and from Surgutneftegas' Talakan field. Also, significant volumes (up to 270,000 bbl/d by 2010 according to Degolyer & McNaughton) would come from Rosneft’s Vankor field. Production from the three fields alone should be able to fill the pipe by around 2011.

Some hurdles exist to the Eastern Pipeline’s plan. First, financing the project is challenging. Russia has obtained Japanese promises of $7 billion for the project, but the first stage will be financed with a $2.4 billion revolving credit from state-owned Sberbank. The route passes through multiple environmentally sensitive areas which could have the potential to further delay the project. Finally, the government estimates that transportation tariffs could be roughly $6 per barrel, but other outside analysts estimate the level at up to $10 per barrel, which would help pay for increasing capital costs.

Black Sea/Turkish Straits
After Russian oil flows through the various pipelines described above, crude oil and products are shipped onward to Europe, the United States, and Asia via tanker. The bulk of Russia's oil (roughly 1 million bbl/d of crude) is shipped to the Mediterranean and to Asia via tankers in the Black Sea, mostly from the port of Novorossiysk. With the opening of the BTC pipeline in early 2006 and rising oil production exports from Caspian countries, Black Sea port shipments through the Bosporus will likely remain at around the same levels for the next couple years. The new Russian support for the Bourgas Alexandropoulis pipeline route, combined with existing support, makes this option one of the more commercially-feasible routes to help alleviate flows via the Bosporus.

Raill Export Routes
Rail exports comprise roughly 5% of Russian crude oil exports. But unless significant investment flows into expanding the Russian pipeline network's capacity, non-pipeline transported exports are poised to increase even more in the upcoming years. As China's growth continues, rail routes are the only way to provide Russian crude oil to East Asia. In the absence of a dedicated pipeline route, Russian crude oil is exported via rail to the northeast cities of Harbin and Daqing and to central China via Mongolia. Rail exports of crude oil to China increased from approximately 200,000 bbl/d in 2005 to 300,000 bbl/d by 2006 according to China’s Ministry of Railways.

A map that shows most of these pipeline projects is available in the Maps section.

In light of the military movements in the Gulf and other information - this is all talk with forces moving behind the scenes for a military confrontation. Cease fire means they were firing. Weren't official attacks from Russia according to Western media over weeks ago. Why a cease fire, if no one is attacking anyone?

RUSSIA
..............

Russia is maneuvering at the UN, hoping to get the Georgian breakaways in on any sort of informal talk.  Georgia is having none of it.
Russia has been told to get the h--l out of Georgia.    A joint Russian, Venezuelan flotilla is planned for the future, in 08.
Participants may include, Peter the Great missile cruiser and three other Russian navy ships visiting Venezuela and would be joined by a unit of long-range anti-submarine patrol aircraft.

Russia introduced a draft resolution on imposing an arms embargo on Georgia.

Our Indian friends say:

Russia recently sold 24 advanced multi-role Su-30MK2 fighter planes to Venezuela, similar to those acquired by India, as well as
dozens of helicopters, and other weapons. Washington bitterly protested the deals.

I wonder, Could we fit all that on the Mount Whitney?

Too Bad The Chechens Didn't Have Pipeline Ties With The US

........................................................................................................................................

First Chechen War
Main article: First Chechen War

The First Chechen War occurred in a two year period lasting from 1994 to 1996, when Russian forces attempted to stop Chechnya from seceding. Despite overwhelming manpower, weaponry and air support, the Russian forces were unable to establish effective control over the mountainous area due to many successful Chechen guerrilla raids. The Budyonnovsk hospital hostage crisis in 1995 shocked the Russian public, and discredited the Russian Government. Widespread demoralization of the Russian forces in the area prompted Russian President Boris Yeltsin to declare a ceasefire in 1996 and sign a peace treaty a year later.

The war was disastrous for both sides. Most estimates give figures of between 3,500 and 7,500 Russian military dead, between 3,000 and 15,000 Chechen militants dead, and no fewer than 35,000 civilian deaths—a minimum total of 41,500 dead. Others have cited figures in the range 80,000 to 100,000.[4]

 Inter-war period
Main article: Chechen Republic of Ichkeria

After the war, parliamentary and presidential elections took place in January 1997 in Chechnya and brought to power Aslan Maskhadov, chief of staff and prime minister in the Chechen coalition government, for a five-year term. Maskhadov sought to maintain Chechen sovereignty while pressing Moscow to help rebuild the republic, whose formal economy and infrastructure were virtually destroyed.[5] Russia continued to send money for the rehabilitation of the republic; it also provided pensions and funds for schools and hospitals. Most of these transfers were stolen by Chechen authorities and divided between favoured warlords.[6] Nearly half a million people (40% of Chechnya's prewar population) have been internally displaced and lived in refugee camps or overcrowded villages. [7] The economy was destroyed. Two Russian brigades were stationed in Chechnya and did not leave.[7]

In lieu of the devastated economic structure, kidnapping emerged as the principal source of income countrywide, procuring over $200 million during the three year independence of the chaotic fledgling state [8] but victims were rarely killed.[9] In 1998, 176 people had been kidnapped, and 90 of them had been released during the same year according to official accounts. President Maskhadov started a major campaign against hostage-takers, and on October 25, 1998, Shadid Bargishev, Chechnya's top anti-kidnapping official, was killed in a remote controlled car bombing. Bargishev's colleagues then insisted they would not be intimidated by the attack and would go ahead with their offensive. Political violence and religious extremism, blamed on "Wahhabism", was rife as well. In 1998, a state of emergency was declared by the authorities in Grozny. Tensions led to the open clashes such as the July 1998 confrontation in Gudermes between the Chechen National Guard and Islamist militants.

Second Chechen War
Main article: Second Chechen War

In August 1999, the IIPB began an unsuccessful incursion into the neighbouring Russian republic of Dagestan in favor of the Shura of Dagestan who sought independence from Russia. (see Dagestan War). In September, a series of apartment bombings took place in several Russian cities, including Moscow, which were blamed on the Chechens. In response, after a prolonged air campaign of retaliatory strikes against the Ichkerian regime a ground offensive began in October 1999 effectively starting the Second Chechen War. Much better organised and planned than in the first Chechen War, the military actions by the Russian Federal forces enabled them to re-establish control over most regions. After the re-capture of Grozny in February 2000, the Ichkerian regime fell apart. Russia has severely disabled the Chechen rebel movement, although violence still occurs throughout the North Caucasus.[10] Nonetheless Russia was successful in installing a pro-Moscow Chechen regime, and the most prominent separatist leaders died including former President Aslan Maskhadov and radical warlord Shamil Basayev.

While recognizing Abkhazia and Southern Ossetia,
Russia abandoned the principle role of chief defender of
the inviolability of international relations that prevailed after the Second World War,
had only been upgraded in early 1990 - x after the collapse of the Soviet Union and continued (mainly as a result of Moscow's support) to operate until now .

There are even some logic in that Dmitry Medvedev - the first Russian president,

Russians really believe this stuff, partly because the government has, in the last few years, taken control of most mass media in the country. Russia also has a new set of "satellite states" (Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) who all expressed approval of the "peacekeeping operation in Georgia." These Russian allies are all nations that were formerly part of the Soviet Union, and are still dependent on Russia for economic or political aid.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has provided Georgia with a billion dollars of economic and military aid. This includes NATO sending technicians and equipment to link Georgia's air defense radars with the NATO system. That means anything the Russian Air Force does over Georgia, will immediately show up in NATO air defense command centers.

excerpt

Putin has gone much too far and does not understand exactly what he is doing, not just stirring up a hornet's nest in all the countries that used to belong to the Communist world but also leading people in the West to ask whether they can do business with this man. That involves investment, it involves creditworthiness, it involves the sanctity of Russian investments abroad, it involves cooperation with the European Union, and in fact the strongest thing that's been done so far is what the EU decided yesterday, to suspend meetings on the EU-Russia partnership program. What they've said is, "We're going to send a team to look, and we're going to judge whether the Russians are following the six points of the cease-fire agreement with French President Sarkozy, and decide whether it's worth having this EU-Russian summit on November 14."

Russia is Back. But Which Russia?

22/08/2008

By Amir Taheri

excerpt-

Ever since Vladimir Putin launched his invasion of Georgia this month, the headlines have screamed: “Russia Is Back!” Supposing this is the case, one might ask: which Russia is back?

Students of history might suggest a return of the Russia of Tsar Alexander I. After all, it was under him that Russia first invaded Georgia in 1801, detaching it from Iran, and triggering a chain of conquests that pushed the Iranians out of the Caucasus and, by 1830, extended the frontiers of the Tsarist Empire to the River Aras.

This is a massive surge of information which is in complete contradiction with other sources outside the main stream media. The most powerful part of the Russian Fleet is preparing to head to the Caribbean with nuclear arms, planes, and subs.

This is serious and so is the problems with a major Russian military about to be present on our door step. It is in the SOP of whatever to flood the net with data obscurring what is happening in Bird Flu (the net is almost barren of any significant or accurate information on the spread or mutation of the bird flu virus, and this also applies to the grave sitatuion with Iran, the Persian Gulf, and this continual 'business as usual' after Russia invaded a country.

Russia is in expansion and readiness mode. They are forming powerful ties with Iran, and Iran in supporting the terrorists who are preparing to attack Israel.

The problem is once the flashpoints go off, only the preppers will have much chance of survival. There is a problem. Russia is sendng its most powerful warship and fleet towards the U.S. and forming a powerful (another powerful) tie with Venezuela. This can't just be passed on to the next admistraton.

All is not well.

RUSSIA Not Willing To Pull Out Of Georgia

More than one thousand Russian soldiers are still occupying
some 18 positions inside Georgia.  Russia continues to tighten it's hold on the breakaway provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
About 200 EU monitors are gearing up to hold positions in the buffer zones by October first.  Russia has claimed these independent nations to be needing protection by over 7,000 Russian soldiers.

Currently, the President of Ukraine is Viktor Yushchenko who was sworn in on January 23, 2005.

According to the Constitution of Ukraine, the President is the guarantor of the state sovereignty and territorial integrity, the observance of the Constitution of Ukraine and human and civil rights and liberties. The President is elected by the citizens of Ukraine by way of a universal, equal and direct vote for a five-year term.

Before the constitutional reform, the Prime minister was usually dismissed unilaterally by the President. After the reform the Prime minister can only be dismissed by the parliament. Formally, the Verkhovna Rada needs to pass a resolution of no confidence in the Cabinet, which must result in the PM's resignation. However, the parliament cannot put the resolution on vote within one year after the approval of the Cabinet's programme

RESOLUTE BAY, Nunavut - It's one of the most celebrated and mythic areas on the Arctic map, but in the parlance of the Canadian military the Northwest Passage is no more.

"We're calling it the Canadian Internal Waters now," says Lt.-Col. Drew Artus, the chief of staff for Joint Task Force North, whose mandate includes protecting Canadian sovereignty over the vast area north of the 60th parallel.

DOES RUSSIA SLEEP NIGHTS?

Georgian War fallout Lingers on...

Let's Re-Cap

Both sides erred big time.  Russia looked the Heavy.

The on going Russian passport scheme and long term messing in Georgia, painfully obvious.

The Russian stock market took a hit.

Foreign business fled or thought twice about investing in Russia.

The Ruble fell.

Russia did not comply with a signed agreement, thereby humiliating the President of the EU.

A terrified Poland ran to sign a missile site agreement.

Ukraine is seeing Red.

There's that old saying, two wrongs never make a right.

When I think of what a huge country Russia is and look at the maps of the web of pipeline$

bringing in immense wealth... I just can't fathom Mr. Putin having time to jerk the chains of his small

neighbors in such an unrelenting fashion as he has these past 7 years or so.
