I had a bunch of canned green beans which we ended up donating before they expired. So we are really sticking to what we actually eat. I will buy more freeze dried/dehydrated foods. I find I am using them more for cooking.
I also finally learned to make all kinds of breads including flat breat and tortillas "just in case". Now I make it every day lol:) I can't go back to store bought bread...even the bakery isn't as good as mine and it's much cheaper to make myself. If power went out I could make flat bread or tortilla on the grill or camping stove. We finally did get our gutters and water barrel. Now we just need rain. :)

Yes Melody, let me share my biggest mistake when prepping. When I started I bought cases of canned veggies; peas, beans, corn, potatoes, etc. I hate to eat canned peas or canned beans, so the cans just sat there until their pull date. And then, guess what, I had to throw them out! Boy, did I learn my lesson to buy things I actually will eat and never mind the rest. It just killed me to waste all that food and the money it took to buy it. My bad! D

I like to store regular canned foods my kids eat like raviolis, campbell's soups, mac & cheese and bought some canned chicken and turkey at Sam's club. But I do stock up on dry foods that last 25-30 years...such as...dried scrambled eggs, dried milk, dried fruits and others...those are things I can use now or later. We moved to Florida so that would be good if the electricy goes out during hurricane season. I like my eggs and kid like their milk and cereals. We have been stocking up on water of course which is really important. There has been a drought here but thankfully it has been rainin the last couple of days and should rain for a couple more dayss. We need gutters so we can catch the water in a rain barrel.

Our ways of prepping have matured some since 2005 when we began. We are less likely to buy the MRE kinds of foods and instead buy storable foods that we would eventually like to eat anyway.

In addition to my regular prepping I have designated at least one day a week as prep day in preparation for the fall. I have picked foods I know will be consumed in the next 12 mos but foods that will surely not expire before then. I am hoping this will help those who are at a loss, I have been a lurker since Fall '07. I will try to post every Friday. I will not be posting quantity as that is up to you.
canned fruit cocktail
refried beans
tortillas
Notice none of this needs to be heated, but you will need a manual can opener.

Welcome to the Prep Lists Topic Area. I am hoping regular Members of AFT will post lists of items needed to survive any emergency.
I am asking our members to put together lists that you can go to the store and/or warehouse membership stores and purchase supplies for 2 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year. Many new people may be trying to purchase food, water and supplies for an immediate emergency we hope these lists make your preparations easier. We also have a new topic area where you can purchase food and other items from internet companies that specifically sell food in large cans meant for long term storage. Check this area out if you are not facing an immediate need for emergency supplies. Please feel free to ask questions we are happy to help everyone we can because the more peopele that are prepared for an emergency the better off we all are in our world. Thank you all! |
