My guess is that you can expect to see a lot of panic over this issue in the near future. But the key is to remain calm — this isn’t the first time the public has been warned about swine flu. The last time was in 1976, right before I entered medical school and I remember it very clearly. It resulted in the massive swine flu vaccine campaign.
Do you happen to recall the result of this massive campaign?
Within a few months, claims totaling $1.3 billion had been filed by victims who had suffered paralysis from the vaccine. The vaccine was also blamed for 25 deaths.
However, several hundred people developed crippling Guillain-Barré Syndrome after they were injected with the swine flu vaccine. Even healthy 20-year-olds ended up as paraplegics.
And the swine flu pandemic itself? It never materialized.
More People Died From the Swine Flu Vaccine than Swine Flu!
It is very difficult to forecast a pandemic, and a rash response can be extremely damaging.
As of Monday April 27, the worldwide total number of confirmed cases was 82, according to WHO, which included 40 cases in the U.S., confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control. But does that truly warrant the feverish news headlines?
To put things into perspective, malaria kills 3,000 people EVERY DAY, and it’s considered 'a health problem'… But of course, there are no fancy vaccines for malaria that can rake in billions of dollars in a short amount of time.

Heaven help us if another Donald or Researcher Type arises
for one of these...
There have been a number of significant pandemics in human history, generally zoonoses that came about with domestication of animals - such as influenza and tuberculosis.
Lassa fever,
Rift Valley fever,
Marburg virus,
Ebola virus and
Bolivian hemorrhagic fever
are highly contagious and deadly diseases with the theoretical potential to become
pandemics.
Their ability to spread efficiently enough to cause a pandemic is limited, however, as transmission of these viruses requires close contact with the infected vector.
Genetic mutations could occur at which could elevate their potential for causing
widespread harm, thus close observation by contagious disease specialists is
merited.
How familiar does that sound?

We have less illness and death from swine flu at this point....than we do from regular seasonal Influenza which causes approx. 35,000 deaths per year.

The Tamiflu product information states that during clinical studies patients taking Tamiflu experienced an increase of nausea, vomiting, bronchitis, insomnia and vertigo compared to those taking a placebo. Tamiflu is not recommended for those pregnant or nursing or those with known kidney disease, heart disease, respiratory disease or any serious health condition.
In addition to Tamiflu's known side effects, there were 48 reported incidences last year of serious abnormal psychiatric behavior, such as delirium and hallucinations. With new reports of suicidal behaviors in patients taking Tamiflu, medical professionals and the drug's manufacturer are monitoring the drug closely.

Mary theres never a good reason to panic, prepare and you shouldn't have to panic at all. But I think this flu is certainly more of a concern than West nile virus at the moment, and it's not running the same as 76'..

CDC estimates that an average of 36,000 people die from influenza-related complications each year in the United States.
USA Cases only...much much worse in the tropics...

Q HERE... Does it truly matter weather it is Swine flu, Malaria, HIV, TB or Hepatitis? No. Many of us have been here in AFT for sometime now. And our job is to keep up on whats going on, and attempt to get down to the truth. We all have known about all listed above, now we have yet another to add to the already too long list of things to worry about. Whats important is that we are not blindsided and caught off guard at the last minute. The more we have to worry about the worse our odds not having to deal with a pandemic. But we have plenty to worry about, ourselves, our kids and grand kids, and neighbors.To try and put a squash on what some call panicking and others call prepping is not what we need right now. Keep our heads on straight and do what YOU feel is right. We have the knowledge, lets use it!

I agree, prioritize, I think right now this developing flu is probably the most significant problemwere facing at the moment, and for the people who are coming to the the site for info, we shouldn't be trying to down play it, let the government do that, lets keep the facts rolling, the fact is this can get real bad...people need to know that.

I don't have time to cut and paste quotes from news clippings of past pandemics but if this is in fact the next pandemic, I bet we will see and increase in deaths from last year.

But experts in influenza and infectious disease say the exact level of danger from the virus is still far from certain.
"This is something of concern [but] I think we should hold back on calling it a real threat," said David Topham, co-director of the New York Influenza Center of Excellence, part of the University of Rochester Medical Center. "We always have to take these things seriously, but we have a very good system in place to respond."
Another expert agreed.
"The gravity of the situation will not be clear for a few more days till we find the extent of the cases and the number of countries involved and explain why we haven't had any deaths in the U.S," said Dr. Scott R. Lillibridge, a professor with the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health in Houston and executive director of the university's National Center for Emergency Medical Preparedness and Response.
The real verdict on just how dangerous this outbreak might be will hinge at least partly on seeing how the disease spreads in the United States, along with expected announcements from the World Health Organization as to how many other countries are affected, the experts said.
So, as can happen in these situations, "the panic is a little bit undue," said Dr. Len Horovitz, a pulmonary specialist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. "There are many facts that we don't know."

I myself prepare as many on the site do...water, food, meds. I don't wan to be caught unprepared.
What is nice about the site is that there is an offering of all points of view taken from
the people , Doctors, News, Govt. and orgaizations etc...
We put it up for people to read...
Reporting other views and Ideas ....( not necessarily my own personal views.)
As reporters of Newspapers don't personally believe every
Persons' /organizations' viewpoint that they hand in for publication.

I have not heard of anyone "Panicking" yet....people are PREPARING for what MIGHT happen is all, and they are worried. Looking for Tamiflu, masks, stockpiling essentials ect? Its what we all have been doing for sometime now. It's called using your head. To Panic is to respond to something in fear without thinking! That's not what we are doing;P And hopefully we will not get to that point

First waves are always mild - if it's anything to worry about we'll know in the fall when it's had to a chance to build up a head of steam during the southern hemisphere's flu season and come back at us. Or not. The H1N1 Spanish Flu started off slow in the Spring of 1918 and reappeared in the fall to wipe out maybe as many as a million people a day
worldwide. Ignore the media blitz and the inevitable burn out that will come in a few weeks (maybe sooner) and use this as a wake up call to get your preps in order. If you find that you and your family need them in a few months, then you're in good shape. If not, then you got ready for H5N1 or whatever else is coming a little sooner than you might otherwise have done. Remember, the odds of another pandemic are 100% - we just don't know when or how bad. As the media moves on to something else you'll hear a lot of people using this as an example as to to why you shouldn't prep - ignore them. Just because it's not on CNN 24/7 doesn't mean it isn't still out there. In a while it will probably be circulating in China, Vietnam, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Hong Kong. It doesn't care if it doesn't get media coverage - it's a virus and it's just looking for hosts. A perfect example of our perception being based on current media trends is H5N1 - ask most people and they'll tell you it died out, simply because it hasn't made the news. Don't fall into the same trap, and keep prepping. This is from the avian flu situation update page on the WHO's website for this year alone. Updates cover human infections and subsequent outcomes (primarily for H5N1). Remember that Indonesia, the country with the highest number of infections (and a case fatality rate of over 80%) stopped reporting suspected or confirmed cases some time ago, so the true picture is undoubtedly much grimmer. When was the last time any of these ever made the mainstream media?

Hi gady... just posting some Media info that shows things that are happening because of this new Flu. I think it is commendable that they acted quickly and if they close schools and large events...it may help but they think it will perhaps not change things just come about more slowly....very interesting, the maps they designed to show us the spread.

Whether Swine Flu amounts to anything or not, after the news broke I began to see my preps in a whole new light, and I have to say I have some really obvious gaps that I'd missed before. I think it took the real possibility of a pandemic - after all these years of talking about it - to make me see what I really needed to concentrate on. My preps are in way better shape that they were this time last week, and hopefully in the next few weeks and months I'll finally get a handle on all the important stuff.

Maine... Swine Flu Cases Confirmed
One victim is from York County and the two other people are from Kennebec County, said
Mills. All are adults and are recovering in their homes, according to the information
released from the governor's office following a press conference at the State House
Wednesday morning.
Officials did not release the names of the people who are ill or the towns where they live.

Mexico outbreak traced to 'manure lagoons' at pig farm
A majority of people are now wearing surgical masks and or plastic gloves in public. Airport terminals are deserted. Schools and government offices are closed and will remain so until at least early May – creating a childcare crisis for millions of working parents.
Many Mexicans are fearing the economic devastation caused by the health emergency as much as they are the prospect of swine flu. Adding to the misery, several countries including China have banned imports of live pigs and pork products from Mexico (and parts of the US) in spite of claims by farming trade groups that it is impossible to catch the virus from cooked meat.

A friend of mine who works for the Health Department here in San Diego was shown an article of sorts about the media blowing up the facts to increase readers/viewers. The he was informed that they wanted his department specifically to dispense meds/ equipment etc. to fellow employees and the public. Go figure.

I am not sure why the fact that 35,000 people die every year from the regular flu, and only a few have died from this flu is a reason to say this is not that big of a deal and nothing to worry about.
One of the officials - I think Osterholm - was asked that question, and he basically said that if that many people die of a flu that nearly everyone in the world has been exposed to (and has some resistance to) then why wouldn't a new flu that no one has ever been exposed to not cause MORE deaths?

The only thing I can think of is that we are not getting the full story.Why would they raise the pandemic level twice in 2 days over 7 deaths?Maybe because it is so very contagious.

hi ukhypo... none of us are real comfy with the unknown. The only way to be in charge is to get things in place ahead of time...like the old childhood fire drills.... if you at least do all this...below, you will be too busy to be worried :) good luck.

You can prepare for an influenza pandemic now. You should know both the magnitude of what can happen during a pandemic outbreak and what actions you can take to help lessen the impact of an influenza pandemic on you and your family. This checklist will help you gather the information and resources you may need in case of a flu pandemic.
- To plan for a pandemic:
- Store a two week supply of water and food. During a pandemic, if you cannot get to a store, or if stores are out of supplies, it will be important for you to have extra supplies on hand. This can be useful in other types of emergencies, such as power outages and disasters.
- Periodically check your regular prescription drugs to ensure a continuous supply in your home.
- Have any nonprescription drugs and other health supplies on hand, including pain relievers, stomach remedies, cough and cold medicines, fluids with electrolytes, and vitamins.
- Talk with family members and loved ones about how they would be cared for if they got sick, or what will be needed to care for them in your home.
- Volunteer with local groups to prepare and assist with emergency response.
- Get involved in your community as it works to prepare for an influenza pandemic.
- To limit the spread of germs and prevent infection:
- Teach your children to wash hands frequently with soap and water, and model the correct behavior.
- Teach your children to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues, and be sure to model that behavior.
- Teach your children to stay away from others as much as possible if they are sick. Stay home from work and school if sick.

It's all still less than 1 week old, give it time. Just tonight on local news here in Syracuse NY, they have 2 they are waiting on for results in my county, and a 20 yr old girl who died in March in Rochester NY may have had it, she had just come back from Mexico when she fell ill suddenly and died. So old and new being examined yet. But I'm betting on a second wave this fall. Not saying the first won't be bad? But feel second coming will be what we all need to worry about.

hi... Onondaga County...and Cortland County also... yes, good to prepare , many will miss the NY Syate Fair....that is quite a crowd. What about all the summer events ...I can't imagine canceling them.

I want to hear the reporters asking intellectual questions like...
Have you as yet determined the basic composition of this flu?
and could you please give an in depth answer, rather than...well it's two pig viruses and a euro/asian virus and it's something we never saw before...
Give me a break...
When it comes to Thailand or Vietnam or Indonesia we get all kinds of technical info....
what is up?
