The pneumonic plague has affected the people's life of the town of Ziketan in Xinghai County in Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, northwest China's Qinghai Province, covering 3,000 square kilometers and boasting a population of 10,000. It is about 266 kilometers away from Xining Capital City of Qinghai Province, taking about 4 hours by buses. According to the latest news from the authorities, the town of 10,000 people has been sealed off after three men died of pneumonic plague and nine others were affected, who are mainly relatives of the deceased and have isolated in hospital receiving treatment. The 3000 square kilometers town is in lockdown, with local people unable to travel outside its boundaries and the residents are being monitored by disease control experts.

The disease has little possibility to spread because the authorities have closed off the infected area. Therefore, the tourists planning to travel to Qinghai Province or having tour presently cannot be worried about it as long as you do not travel the town of Ziketan in Xinghai County.

Qinghai, a relatively remote province where proximity to animals such as rats and fleas is common, has reported two minor pneumonic plague outbreaks in the past eight years.

Flu, respiratory infections kill 155 in Ukraine

As of November 9, a total of 155 people have died of flu and acute respiratory infections, including 11 people on November 8, the Health Ministry reported.

Since the start of the epidemic, 969, 247 have had flu and respiratory diseases.

A total of 48, 972 have been hospitalized, 446 people are currently in intensive care department.

A total of 11 people died on November 8 alone, including three fatalities in Chernivtsi region, two in Lviv region, two in Ivano-Frankivsk region, two in Rivne region, one in Vinnytsia and one in Khmelnytsky region.

The epidemic threshold for influenza and acute respiratory infections has been exceeded in 13 regions and in Kyiv.

The number of deaths and infections from flu were still rising in Ukraine on Monday, as government officials argued the outbreak was showing signs of stabilizing. "Today we clearly had certain positive signs of a reduction in the flu infection rate," said Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, at a meeting with World Health Organisation officials. "We are seeing a positive trend." A total of 155 people have died from flu or flu-related symptoms since the outbreak struck the former Soviet republic in late October, with nine victims losing their lives in the last 24 hours, Tymoshenko said, in comments reported by 1+1 television. Lab tests had confirmed the virulent A/H1N1 influenza strain, known also as swine flu, was responsible for 15 of the deaths, according to data made public on Ukraine's Ministry of Health website Monday. Segodnia, Ukraine's largest daily, reported on Monday that the number of swine-flu-related deaths nationwide was actually 24. Tymoshenko said the flu situation was nonetheless showing signs of improvement. She said the number of Ukrainians admitted to hospitals as flu patients fell for the first time on Sunday, to 42,468, compared with 127,254 on Wednesday. Almost 1 million Ukrainians have received treatment for the flu since the October 29 initial outbreak, according to Ministry of Health statistics. Most live in Ukraine's western Lviv, Ivano- Frankivsk and Ternopil provinces, adjacent to Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. Officials in the Ivano-Frankivsk and Ternopil provinces echoed Tymoshenko's assertion that the infection rate was stabilizing. A Ternopil city council statement said, "there is a definitive improvement in the epidemic's situation," according to an Interfax news agency report. Almost 50,000 people across Ukraine have been hospitalized for dangerous flu infections, and 445 are in severe or worse condition, according to a report from the Korrespondent website. Shortages of basic medical supplies for first-line response to flu continued to be widely reported in major Ukrainian media on Monday, despite repeated promises by Tymoshenko that state-owned pharmaceutical and fabric factories would soon redress the problem.

The death toll from the flu outbreak in Ukraine has risen to 144 cases, the country's Health Ministry reported on Sunday. According to the ministry, 15 regions in the ex-Soviet republic had already crossed the flu epidemic threshold while 11 provinces were close to it. The Ukrainian government imposed quarantine in nine western provinces in late October in an attempt to curb the spread of flu. All education establishments in Kiev were closed, and people were obliged to wear medical masks in all catering establishments, shops and social services facilities across the former Soviet republic. Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko earlier requested help from other countries over the outbreak of flu. The Ukrainian Health Ministry said on Monday 255,000 flu cases had been registered in the country, with some 15,000 people receiving treatment in hospital. The Health Ministry has confirmed the death of 14 people from swine flu and 32 swine flu cases in the country. The Ukrainian parliament has approved the allocation of 1 billion hryvnias ($125 million) on measures to fight swine and seasonal flu.

British scientists are examining samples of a strain of swine flu behind a deadly Ukrainian outbreak to determine whether the virus has mutated.

More than 80 people have died in Ukraine in the last two weeks and there have been 450,000 cases of respiratory illness.

The World Health Organisation has sent an emergency team to monitor the epidemic and says it assumes most of the illness in the country has been caused by H1N1 swine flu.

The Ukrainian government has closed schools and universities for three weeks, and many public events have been banned.

President Viktor Yushchenko said experts fear the simultaneous existence of three types of flu viruses within the country "may lead to the emergence of an even more aggressive new virus".

The WHO team of nine experts dispatched samples from infected patients for examination at the World Influenza Centre at Mill Hill, in London.

"Many questions remain to be answered," the organisation said in a statement.

"The outbreak in Ukraine may be indicative of how the virus can behave in the northern hemisphere during the winter season, particularly in health care settings typically found in Eastern Europe."

The epidemic is concentrated in the west of the country, which has borders with four European Union states, but a growing number of cases are being reported in the capital Kiev.

The European Union is working closely with health experts in Ukraine, and member states are preparing to provide logistical and medical support if required.

Swine Flu

Austria, Hungary and Slovenia have already said they will send disinfectants, vaccines and respirators.

Slovakia has closed two of its five border crossings with Ukraine, against WHO advice, in an attempt to stop the virus from spreading.

Ukrainians have complained of their struggle to access medical supplies, and many pharmacies have sold out of face masks as people try to protect their families from infection.

However, with elections in January there is concern that President Yushchenko and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who are fierce rivals, are making political capital out of the outbreak.

Are we missing something in the translation?

The people are not dieing from H1N1, they are dieing from neumonic plague.  Where did this come from is the question we should be asking.  Is it hidden in the H1N1 vaccine or is it being spread with the chemical trails over the country.

The human population is under attack from somebody or some group.  That is what we should be looking for, something just doesnt smell right.

You know if the vaccine is tainted, it really is hard to say when a reaction could take place.  I know if i was after maximum kill rate, it would be best to have a reaction that would take place several months or years later.

It is like the virus that was included in the origional polio vaccine, it was found years later.  Then this virus was passed to the children of the origional vaccinated group.  The verdict is still out on that virus.

That's a tough one to call. 475,000 links on junk sites and blogs for days now yet but zero links on the news about the updated total of 239 dead.

Update: more death, illness 

Yesterday at 14:10 | (Wire reports) Ukraine’s Health Ministry on Nov. 5 said the death toll of patients with flu-related and acute respiratory illnesses (ARI) had jumped to 95. 

Deputy Health Minister Zinoviy Mytnik said told journalists during a press briefing that a total of 633, 877 cases of flu-related and ARI have been registered from Oct. 29 through Nov. 5. 

Mytnik said 15 of 31 patient samples sent to London for laboratory analysis tested positive for the H1N1, or swine flu, virus. 

Meanwhile, over 600 medical workers in Kyiv have fallen sick with the flue and acute respiratory illnesses, according to Kyiv deputy Mayor Iryna Kilchitskaya, who on Nov. 5 told a daily Kyiv newspaper that 200 of the afflicted are doctors. 

In a related story, Ihor Pokanevych, head of the WHO office in Kyiv, told Deutsche Welle on Nov. 5 that in Ukraine, as in the rest of the world, there will be three waves of the swine flu virus: the first – which Ukraine is experiencing now, the second – in the spring, and the third – during the autumn of 2010. 

Pokanevych noted that the current pandemic is complicated to sort out because it involves three strains of flu virus: two seasonal strains [of the Brisbane] flu and the swine flu, which as a result could lead the virus to mutate into a still more virulent, new virus.
