Sarawak Mulling Screening Visitors From Avian Flu-hit South Korea

KUCHING, Jan 3 (Bernama) -- Sarawak is awaiting instructions from the Ministry of Health on whether to screen airline passengers from South Korea following an outbreak of avian flu in that country last week.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan said screening of visitors from South Korea would be a preventive measure to check any outbreak of avian flu in the state.

"No sign of the virus having spread outside South Korea. However, we are on the alert," he told reporters after a group of journalists from the Kuching Division Journalists Association paid a courtesy call on him at his office Monday.

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is scheduled to start its direct flights from Incheon International Airport in Seoul to Kuching on Jan 15.

Dr Chan, who is also the state Disaster and Relief Management Committee chairman, said the state was ready to work closely with the Health Ministry.

He said thermal scanners were installed at the airport to screen visitors during the global Influenza A(H1N1) outbreak in 2009.

"It will be easy as we already have the equipment at the airport. Once they start (in Kuala Lumpur), we will follow," he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Chan said Sarawak recorded a total of 164 cases of H1N1 last year, until Dec 25, compared to 724 cases in 2009.

H5N1 is there too.
Suspected cases of bird flu were reported Thursday in Cheonan, North Chungcheong Province, and Iksan, North Jeolla Province. If the symptoms detected are found to be those of the highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza as suspected by the government, Korea could face an unprecedented situation of being hit by foot and mouth disease and bird flu at the same time. The Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry said close inspections of a duck farm in Cheonan and a chicken farm in Iksan are underway. Ducks and chickens in the farms showed symptoms of bird flu such as reduced spawning rates and feed intake and cyanosis in the comb. The final results of the inspections will come out Friday, but the poultry of the affected farms and epidemiologically related farms were culled as a preventive measure the same day. A ministry official said, “The reported suspected cases are highly likely to involve a highly pathogenic strain of bird flu,” adding, “We pay special attention to the fact that more than 500 chickens died at the Iksan farm.” In Iksan, a highly pathogenic strain of bird flu was detected from mallard feces early this month

South Korea: Bird flu, FMD spreading faster, farther
Bird flu is spreading northward to Seoul and metropolitan areas from central parts of the country. (Snip) The National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service (NVRQS) confirmed Monday that ducks at a farm in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, and another farm in Naju, South Jeolla Province, tested positive for the virulent strain of H5N1 avian influenza. Anseong was the third region to be hit by the disease since Dec. 29, with previous cases breaking out in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, and Iksan, North Jeolla Province.

The avian flu outbreak was confirmed at 10 poultry farms in these provinces, with an additional 10 farms having reported suspected cases of the highly contagious bird disease. Some wild birds in South Gyeongsang Province were also found dead from H5N1. Continued: http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/ww...
