There has been a lot of new information that came out
concerning the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV)
outbreak, formerly novel coronavirus (nCoV) during the course of the past week. Most recently, on May 31, The Italian Health Ministry reported their first case of MERS-CoV in a citizen who recently traveled to Jordan and stayed for 40 days, according to an Italian Health Ministry news release Friday (computer translated). Italian health officials say he was admitted to a hospital in Tuscany with the symptoms of high fever, cough and signs of respiratory failure. A virological investigation at the Pasteur Institute in Morocco, on May 29, has ruled out any claim of a coronavirus infection. Also on May 31, the World Health Organization (WHO) was notified of an additional case of MERS in a 61-year-old man with underlying medical conditions in Al-Ahsa. In addition, three patients earlier reported from Al-Ahsa have died. Globally, from September 2012 to date, WHO has been officially informed of a total of 50 laboratory-confirmed cases of infection with MERS-CoV, including 30 deaths. This is not including the Italian case.
