One child has died and nearly 80 others have been affected by an outbreak of acute respiratory infection, in some cases complicated by meningitis, in Rostov-on-Don. Twenty-eight children from the Teremok kindergarten are currently in hospital, 11 with symptoms of pneumonia and nine with meningitis. One child died yesterday despite receiving medical treatment, ITAR-TASS reported Thursday. A group of specialists from the Research and Development Institute for Childhood Infections will today fly to Rostov-on-Don, about 1,000 kilometers south of Moscow, to assist local pediatricians who are treating the children. "All of the children have been examined by specialists from the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases Medical University and bacteriological and virological blood tests have been carried out," the regional Health Ministry said, adding that there is no meningitis epidemic in the region. The kindergarten has been closed and 34 preschoolers being kept at home under constant observation of pediatricians, ITAR-TASS reported. Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova has commissioned Russia's chief pediatrician for infectious diseases Yuri Lobzin to provide assistance to regional specialists, said the ministry's press service. The Investigative Committee in the Rostov region has opened a criminal case against the head of the kindergarten under charges of negligence. The virus is likely to have come from a clothing market where mostly immigrants from Vietnam, China and other Asian countries work. The market is located in the Pervomai district, where the kindergarten is also based.1

I am wondering if all countries use the same vaccines, how could that be impacting the variable differences in geographic areas?
God Bless

There is a meningitis outbreak in Africa with figures that dwarf those we have seen for MERS and H7N9 (although this are the lowest figures seen for 10 years:

"From 1 January to 12 May 2013 (epidemiologic week 19), 9 249 suspected cases of meningitis, including 857 deaths, with a case fatality ratio of 9.3 percent, have been reported from 18 of the 19 African countries under enhanced surveillance1 for meningitis. The number of cases reported so far are the lowest recorded during the epidemic season in the last ten years2. "

http://www.who.int/csr/don/2013_06_06_menin/en/index.html

I notice that in this case WHO is happy to quote 'suspected cases' whereas in the flu outbreaks and MERS they have a much higher criteria , in MERS they demand 2 independent laboratory confirmations and only report 'confirmed' cases.  Maybe the clinical observations in meningitis are more clear, and with the flu there are so many varities that clinical observations cannot tell which is which.

The number of children infected in a kindergarten of Russia’s southern city of Rostov-on-Don has grown to 103, the chief of the regional health and consumer rights watchdog Rospotrebnadoz, Mikhail Solovyov, said at a session on Monday.

48 children currently remain in hospitals and 55 are under medical supervision at home. Five children are in intensive care, he added.

"It is difficult to call infection forecasts in Rostov-on-Don favorable, as the incubation period of the virus is 21 days," the chief of regional Rospotrebnadzor added.

According to him, the ECHO 11 virus is resistant to the environment and hits mainly small children. And 40 years ago it was ECHO 11 that hit more than one million people in Singapore.
