WHO has announced the formal linking of MERS in camels with two human cases.
" On 27 November, 2013, the National IHR Focal Point of Qatar notified WHO that the Supreme Council for Health and the Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with the National Institute of Public Health and Environment (RIVM) of the Ministry of Health and the Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands, have detected Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in a herd of camels in a barn linked to two confirmed human infections infections (see DONs dated 18/10/13 and 29/10/13)." http://www.who.int/csr/don/2013_11_29/en/index.html Don't let the camels spit in your face |

Controversy over the results!!
http://www.recombinomics.com/News/11291302/MERS_Camel_Qatar_ProMED.html BUT!! I think this is just a little to coincidental. If it is the case that camels spread the virus. Then MERS wont develop into a pandemic. Hooray

Yep - still no definite direction of transmission. Did the camels infect the humans, or vice versa?
Cobber - while I'm still not convinced that MERS has what it takes to hit us with a serious pandemic, it's not the fact that it's a camel disease that'll give us a pass. It's already shown that irrespective of the animal reservoir that's harboring it, MERS can pass to humans, and it can then be transmitted H2H under the right circumstances. Those are the first baby steps of a potentially pandemic virus. BTW - I fixed your link |
