Since earthquakes and volcano's are related (by pressure) increase of one leads to increase of the other. My impression is that volcanic systems might be interconnected with magma-streams 10+ miles/kilometers under earths crust. What I understand is that solar activity might influence the magnetic fields around the earth and the iron centre deep in the earth.
The earth as a dynamic system-like weather-with high and low pressure areas, thunderstrorms and huuricanes. There are only a few places on the earths surface that are older than 1.000.000.000 years. Over half the worlds population live in area's were the surface is less then 2000 years old (manmade dirt, river-sediments). |

There are at least 6 known super-volcano's http://www.ranker.com/list/the-world_s-6-known-supervolcanoes/analise.dubner. But I do not see the Etna ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Etna[/url] ,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decade_Volcanoes) on the list. Because of the complexety there are proberbly more than six supervolcano's . (defenition is producing more than 1000km3 of "output" in an eruption http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supervolcano wikipedia also comes with another list than ranker. The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_explosivity_index =<7)

You stated that portions of the earth is over 1,000,000,000 years old. You might be interested in this 8 minute video. http://amazingdiscoveries.tv/media/1415/101-mud-layers/ |

OHC you have the right to see things in your way-I am not going to discuss religion here. Please respect that, will you ?

Not a religious discussion just another view of how the layers of the earth were formed. If you believe in evolution then that is your religion, I believe in the flood, so are you suggesting that this is a one way conversation that your religious views are the only ones allowed. You are the one that stated that the portions of the earth are over 1,000,000,000 years old and that is based on a theory. The video disproves some of the theories that support evolution with no mention of religion in the video.

OHC my friend, evolution is demonstrable, not an act of faith. Just put some bacterial cultures under a microscope and you can watch how the bacteria adapt to small changes in the environment.
But evolution does not disprove God either, far from it. God can use evolution as a tool of divine will far more easily than the curious scientist dropping dilute antibiotics into the petri dish. That is a statement of my faith. Fact and faith need not fight. I believe that God intended people to develop brains, so using mine and appreciating all science is, for me, an integral part of a lifetime of worship. Thank you for the link to the video dissertations about the book of Daniel, by the way. Most interesting!

@Satori, I could not agree more with the statement from The Extinction Protocol ! Humans are an endangered species. Climatechange means permafrost is loosing its ice, (and release methane and other global-warming gasses) the Greenland ice-shield is lifting its weight. This might even influence the balance of the (gyroscope) earth !
In my opinion priority should be given in making certain that some humans survive (in space ?). We may be in an excelerating process of radical global changes.

Hi Guys, here is my view of climate change, volcanoes, tsunamis, floods, and droughts:
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Reinhold Niebuhr So I prep to change the things I can change if my son and I live through whatever happens. I hope God gives me the wisdom! |

Do I believe "the end is near" ? I hope not ! But there are lots of questions to ask about long-term developments geologically. Looking at the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siberian_Traps one might wonder what effect something like a super-volcano in the present might have.

It's funny that I should see this post this morning, because last night I have an incredibly vivid dream that a volcano erupted here in NZ suddenly and without warning. I clearly saw this huge cloud of smoke and debris shoot up really high, like a rocket.
Personally I love volcanoes, earthquakes and the whole physical side of geography. Man spends too much time thinking they can control every aspect of life and I like the fact that there is nothing at all that we can do about the volatile nature of our planet. It's sobering and humbling and we all need a dose of that. I'm surrounded by extinct volcanoes. The active ones are in the north island. I used to live in Auckland which is a major city here that is built on top of 53 dormant volcanoes. Of course the settlers didn't realise they were volcanoes when they built the city. We used to get leaftlets through the door all the time from the government with emergency plans on them. The leaflets had a map on the back showing what risks were present where. I lived right on the beach and my location was in imminent danger from volcanic eruption, lava, pyroclastic flow, ash fallout, earthqakes and tsunami !!!!!!!

You have guts KiwiMum! I live in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains and we can have minor earthquakes. If Yellowstone goes I am I am in real trouble. No tsunamis at least!
NZ has lots of things that can happen but like I said above: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Reinhold Niebuhr |

In the Netherlands-Low Countries-we have to live with the dangers of flooding from rivers or the North Sea. Earthquakes do happen here but very limited, at least on the shorter timescale.
Humans would like to believe they are "above nature" but nature can remind us (like in Nepal or the flu) that it is far stronger and older than we ever even can dream of. I hate floodings, volcano's, earthquakes, illness and the misery it brings. But it is a part of live-we all have to deal with it !

FluMom, I have that very same quotation on my kitchen wall. I apply to all areas of my life!! The other quote I live by is from St. Julian of Norwich (who incidentally was a woman, an anchoress) "All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well".
