Daaaaaaaaarn, WOW! man what a comprehensive list! DARN! WOW!

Impressive first post. Sort of last man standing stuff.

Alot of this stuff on an initial buy would cost big bucks.

From this list can you advise what a family of three may need for   a good basic start out kit for a worst case scenereo (it may never come to that but more info is always better) list.  Some folks are really new to this and your wisdom would be appreciated and by me too! Oh, by the way welcome. -Kevin

Awesome Preps.   How much food do you have and what types?  Also, what is your water supply/backup?  Thanks!

Is your plan to bug out to the wilderness and live off land?

Damn man...wish I lived wherever you are: that is the way to go.

Bannor...Unfortunately I do not feel that I have enough food or H2O stored.  Other that the Mountain house freeze dried entrees pictured in the kitchen tote and the dated MRE’s  (I have really got to replaces them) Most of what I have is can goods of items we use every day, this makes rotation much easier.  I do try to keep some extra flour, sugar, and evaporated milk, powdered Gatorade, and powdered eggs on hand.  (Vacuum sealed and stored in 5gal buckets) on hand.  I also tend to be a date and price watcher at the local grocery market, if I find a commodity with a really long date or exceptional price I will pick up a few cans even if it is an item not normally used. Heck I do not normally use Freeze dried entrιes and MRE’s (once in a while though) over all I have about 3-4 months supply.

H2O I keep 17 gallons of drinking water stored in jerry type cans and a couple of cases of bottled drinking water.  I have an MSR Waterworks water filter and live near a couple of small lakes (I figure if I treat the water with Iodine tablets and or bleach, Filter it then boil it we should be good). Water is heavy bulky and hard to transport if you need to bug out.

Bugging out…I do not have any plans to bug out unless absolutely necessary. I like my home and have nowhere to bug out to.  I am sure I could impose on some of my relatives that live in farm country as I would be able to at least offer them extra supplies, labor and knowledge (I would not be showing up on their doorstep empty handed, But I do not know if they are really prepared themselves)

Stormriderfla…Every ones idea of a worst-case scenario varies from H5n1, mutant zombies, terrorist or nuke attack, Mother Nature. Therefore a basic start out kit will vary as well.

For safety sake I am assuming that you reside in Florida and that your worst-case scenario is H5n1. Also, since you reside in FL you have basic preps for a hurricane. Which would mean you have the basic content of the CERT module listed in my original post.  For the H5n1 pandemic scenario, I recommend a lot of food/water stored ahead, quality dust type face masks (which I am currently lacking) with gas mask type masks they are too expensive to throw away and would need to be sterilized after every use before entering your safe zone. A wide array of over the counter cough cold and flu meds.  (Fever reducers, decongestants, expectorants ect.) I would also include some well-researched homeopathic remedies.

If you are starting with zero supplies I would start with the Items listed in the CERT module and kitchen tote.  After that I would recommend a quality shotgun or 22. cal rifle

(Not the best for mutant zombies and the like but most versatile for procuring food and providing minimal security for you family)

I have found a lot of my supplies I was not even aware I had until I got everything organized.  Look around your home.  Do you have those plastic utensils for the carry out the other night in the drawer? Don’t forget that sleeping bag and blue trap in the garage (yeah the tarp in with the paint rollers) Do you see the picture I am painting?  Like I said at the beginning I hope I can help at least just one person. If anyone has any questions or advise feel free to post it or pm me.

Maybe I missed it but I didn't see rat and mouse poison on anyone's list yet.  Or fly killer.  We had a strike of our refuse collectors once.  The cities were piled with bags of rubbish and running with rats, buzzing with flies.  With BF there could even be bodies in the streets.

Also, I got some stuff called macroporous tape that sticks to the skin without (much) irritation.  I used to use it to hold band aid on.  Now I intend to use it if TSHTF to seal round the edges of masks.  Apparently their weakest link is their imperfect seal.  The air just gets in round the side and by passes the mask.

Could you please pm me with a link to the macro porous tape?

Maybe I should create another module for just waste removal/ pest control any Ideas?

the best thing to keep mice and rats out of your house is 100% PURE PEPPERMENT OIL...put on cotton balls and place up, down and all around the house.     they hate the smell and will not go near it, i and my friends have done this and we have no mice or rats.........you have to repete this every 4 months or so..........much better than mouse traps  and poison........please do nor use PEPPERMINT oil for cooking that will not work, must be 100% PEPPERMENT OIL....good luck.....SUNSET

Hi prprd and Missipi Mama!

Could I be facetious and suggest you add body bags!

Seriously though.  The macroporous tape I got in an ordinary chain pharmacy called Superdrug, that we have over here (UK).  I imagine you can get it anywhere.  It was next to the band aids and stuff like that.  Its not woven like band aid, or if it is its VERY fine weave.  I think it may be intended for fixing bandages to the skin.  I discovered it five years ago when I was giving up smoking and needed something to stick round the edges of my nicotine patches which used to come off in the pool etc. Their head office is in a town called Croydon near London but I'm afraid I don't know the address.  It is such an ordinary sstore though that I'm sure everything they sell can be got in the US.

I'm new to this site and also not very technical.  What does PM me mean?  Beth

Hi Beth and welcome to the site.  PM means send me a private message.  You will finde the word private messenger at the top of your computer screen to the right .  You will be able to send a message to me or any one you choose, and no one else will see it.  Are many people in your country planning for the bird flu?I think the tape is called by another name her in the US.  I went looking for it today by that name coudn't find it, but I did locate the tape you described.  Thanks a lot Beth.

Sunset…I Figured the best thing would be a cat.  Not mouth wash for mice. Mmm minty fresh breath.     Ribbing aside, I will have to look into that I was unaware that scent of peppermint was unappealing to rats and mice.

Beth…Welcome if you are new then I flat out wet behind the ears because you have over twice as many posts as I do. AND yes body bags should be added to the list although I guess in a pinch the contractor grade refuse bags could be used as make shift body bags.

Thanks Beth, this got me thinking maybe Duct Tape/100 mph tape (the military version)

Even with body bags.  The contractor refuse bag may still come in to use and they will need to be sealed.

Whatever you do don't use duct tape to seal a mask on your face!!! We have something here called DUCK tape which is used for sealing all sorts of things including leaky pipes.  I read you could use it for removing warts so God knows what it would do to your skin. Dissolve it? Even if your US duct tape is not the same, for your face you need something meant for skin from a pharmacy.

One more prep I have (talking of pipes), is a pump type gadget that makes a vacuum briefly in a toilet, and shifts blockages.  It cost about £10 (15-20 dollars?).   I use one normally to save the expense of calling out the experts, so although its not cheap its worth it.  In an emergency there would be no experts and a blocked WC would be awful.  I also have caustic soda which you can put down the kitchen drain to unblock it.

And does anyone know where to get a UV room air cleaner? And about how much they cost?

Missipi Mama.  I'm glad you found some skin friendly tape. People here bought tamiflu (the lucky ones who gcould find it)and water and batteries last October.  I've seen people with whole trolleys full of water.  But on the whole I don't think much of it is going on.  We don't have a culture influenced by 9/11 and  the anthrax scare and all those hurricanes.  However I've also heard that those who do prep keep quiet about it for security and because no one likes to appear scared.  Also our government is playing it down a lot.  Not like that Leavitt(?) guy you have going round all the states telling people to stash food.

Love to you all.  Beth

Beth…No I don’t plan on using duct tape on my face.  I was suggesting that to seal up the contractor grade garbage bags (make-shift body bags).  You can use the duct tape on blisters. I have used it often when backpacking just apply it directly to the skin surface where you are getting the hot spot.  It will eventually wear off, but provides you with a nice friction free surface.

Try this link for a UV air purifier.  I have one of the air filters without the UV and it works well. They are also very quiet. Though they are a little pricey.

As for keeping on the down low about your preps, the longer you prepare. The more people will start to catch on.  They may not say anything but they will start learning they can rely on you to borrow your pocketknife or the scissors in your purse. Hey Beth do you have any aspirin or a band-aid.  I certainly recommend trying to stay low key as much as possible.  Just the learning aspect will key others in to your mindset.  They will remember you took that First aid/CPR course, joined the local Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), or taught wilderness survival to your kids scout troop. When things get bad they will come to you, which may or may not be a good thing.

Prprd 1 Thanks for the help.  Yes I have band aid aspirin cocodamol ibuprufen and clove oil for toothache.

MOST IMPORTANT I think, I have bought some packets of electrolytes - the sort you take with you if you are going to India or Africa and risk serious dehydration from diaorreah (spelling?).

It can be a lifesaver if someone is sick.  Water needs to have some salts and trace minerals in it and a little glucose.

I got it in a chain pharmacy - iit was out on the counter for travellers.

My children know I'm prepping.  They saw the stuff when they came home at Christmas.  I expected a lot of teasing but they didn't give me much flack.  My youngest came round the other day and asked me how long I had preps for.  I said it depends how many of you turn up (I have five, one still at home, and 3 have partners).  I only hope they do turn up, and in time.  I couldn't bear to think of them living in big cities in tiny rooms with no preps.  No one else knows.  Beth

Beth... I have aqua pure (potable aqua) which is a iodine tables for making waer from natural sources potable. The iodine does kill viruses and bacteria, Though it leaves a little (ok alot) to be deisred on the taste scale! You can purchase them at most any sporting goods store in the camping department. I am quite sure if you do a Google search you can purchase them VIA the internet.

I also have a potassium Iodate tablet listed in the NBC kit in the his-n-hers totes. This is for blocking the thyroid in a nuclear incident (Nuclear incident doesn't that sound PC! lol) to help prevent radation sickness. They can be peucahsed on the internet as well. JRH enterprises and the frugal squirrel website both have links to where to pruchase them. Again you can just do a Google search and come up with a bunch of hits.

Hope this helps.

One thing I would caution about using iodine tablets is that if a person is allergic to shellfish, they very well could be allergic to the iodine tablets. My husband is allergic to shellfish and we are not going to attempt to use the idodine tablets.

Then I would suggest a water filter. I have been very please with the MSR water works. I  have dragged the thing all over North America, Mexico and Central America and have had no problems.  The Katydn and Berkey filter (NOT Sure on the Spelling) also seem to be very popular.

Thanks guys!       Also has anyone considered that pollution of water might not be with bacteria/viruses but with chemicals?  We had an awful incident at a place caled Camelford (I think) in the UK where some idiot put poison in the water and a whole village got permanently damaged.  I fear oil from the road above us might get into our well. What removes chemicals from water - or is that a silly question?

prprd1:  Good Grief!  Is there anything you don't have on your list.  I'll never be able to acquire all that stuff.  How did you start?  And where did you get it?  Mostly, it looks like you have 2 totes, is that right?

BTW:  What's SF and FS?  You can PM on that.  Thanks,

Things I don’t have on my list….

The Kitchen sink!!Wink

Tami-Flu (this is not by choice and I am looking to procure some)

Current MRE’s  (meals ready to eat I found out the ones pictured are dated)

I have been in the survival and preparedness scene for at least the last 10-12 years. I have always been an avid backpacker, hunter & fishermen and so on so forth.  As for where I got it a little here and a little there. Army surplus stores, specialty outfitters, sporting goods stores, dive shops, and the beloved Internet to name a few. (If there is a particular items you wish to know about please ask and I will try to be more specific.)

Totes actually I have four listed. (There is actually a fifth see below)

1.) HIS/ Mine… NBC gear (mask pre-fitted and suit in my size), personal sanitation pack, and other assorted odds and ends to make life a little more comfortable.

2.) HERS/ Wifes… almost identical to the first tote just specialized more for her.

3.) KITCHEN Tote… Assorted general kitchen Items used in food preparation, Freeze-dried foods. Outdated MREs have been removed (I still need to replace them), and a few other assorted comfort items (wind up radios, wind up flashlights, candles ect.)

4.) EXTENDED Kitchen Tote… Meat grinder, Grain Mill, Coffee Grinder, and extra matches. ***note***This tote is for when things are not going to return to normal. Order will not be restored and things like power, running water and gas heat will be a thing of the past. Life will be as it was during the depression.

5.) COMBUSTABLE kit… In the BOVK (bug out vehicle kit) This is a those messy automotive fluids that seem to leak no matter what I do or how I store them.  (I got tired of having a mess every time I turn around and sealed them in a plastic tote.) It can actually be seen in the lower right hand corner of that pic.

Actually Most of what I have listed is non-perishable items. Therefore I have been acquiring them for a really long time.  I have found a lot of lightly used camping gear and military surplus items and yards sales (I bought 2 GI duffle bags for a $1 a piece last summer)

Besides my list is should only be used as a guide. You may modify it to your own needs. Add to it or take items off of it. ALSO FEEL FREE TO MAKE SUGGESTIONS! (this is how I fine tune it) Every body has different priorities, budgets, and necessities. I would just suggest get what you can when you can. Look for deals. Also, look around your household. Alot of what I have listed and used to create these Field kits/modules are items that were just tossed in a cabinet, drawer, in the basement or garage. Do you have sleeping bags and a tent? How about those first aid supplies from that knee surgery?  I think you can and will get your-self prepared other wise you would not be asking? I thank you for the motivation to ask question and get your “stuff” together!
