41 kids die from mystery disease in Papua along with some number of local pigs and chickens.

The region was hit by the hog cholera virus from 2005 to 2010 that caused thousands of livestock, especially pigs, to die. “We fear the virus has mutated to humans and this must immediately be analyzed,” said Madai.

based on one local media report, the number of fatalities has grown to 56.

birds and humans dying at the same time very worrying!!!!!

Thanks Guest.

Nethy Dharma Somba, The Jakarta Post, Jayapura | Headlines | Tue, November 24 2015, 6:27 PM

A large number of children, many below the age of seven, have died of an unexplained disease in Mbuwa district, Nduga regency, Papua, following the start of the rainy season in early November.

A medical team consisting of health workers from Nduga, Wamena and Jayawijaya regencies arrived at the location but have yet to ascertain the cause of the deaths.

“As many as 41 children have died, as of today. They present with a slight illness at first but die shortly after these initial signs. The medical team from Nduga Health Office, assisted by the Wamena Health Office may have returned home, but the cause of these deaths remains uncertain,” said Mbuwa district chief Erias Gwijangge, during a call to The Jakarta Post on Monday.

Erias said Nduga and surrounding areas had experienced drought and were exposed to haze from forest fires. Rain only fell in the past month. When the rain began, a number of livestock, such as pigs and poultry, also died abruptly.

“Many of the children died prior to the livestock but there was no report of child fatalities, only in the last three days,” said Erias.

When contacted by the Post, Wamena City community health clinic analysis member Yan Hubi, who joined the trip to Mbuwa district, said his clinic analyzed blood samples of the children to find out if the children had been infected by malaria, but all were negative.

Yan returned to Mbuwa on Nov. 17. A doctor and several other medical workers are also continuing to conduct medical treatment in Mbuwa.

According to Yan, when a long drought hit the Pegunungan Tengah mountain range region in 1998, including Nduga, a malaria epidemic took place and killed hundreds of people. The symptoms of those who died were similar to the recent deaths.

“They initially caught the flu, then diarrhea and then later, they died. We asked for malaria analysis, conducted a rapid test in the district and later a microscopic test at a lab in Wamena. Of the 70 blood samples, all were negative for malaria,” said Yan, who was also involved in blood analysis during the 1998 malaria epidemic in the Pegunungan Tengah region.

no mention of this outbreak on the Indonesian Ministry of Health websites, but the Indonesian press and twitter (Hashtag `Kematian anak papua’  or `Papua Child Deaths’) is driving a lot of traffic on the story. Symptoms appear to be primarily fever and respiratory distress.

This article is from 6 years ago, but it may have some relevance.  Not only have we had 6 previous Cholera pandemics, but Cholera also mutates like the flu, and a Cholera pandemic is almost been expected.

Very rarely over the last decade,  if ever, have I heard a health authority or doctor ever use the term "mutated to humans", as what was mention in the initial post in this thread.  That has got my attention, and that is a very serious statement that shouldn't be taken lightly.

Anyway, the old article I mentioned...

Cholera bug mutates to acquire flu qualities: scientists

Last updated: 01 September, 2009
Kalyan Ray,DH News Service,Aug 31,New Delhi:

They may be different infections caused by different kinds of micro organisms, but scientists have now found that cholera and flu are getting closer and may hit populations across the world with devastating effect.

An international team that analysed the genome of 23 strains of cholera bugs has discovered that they will become more dangerous in future to infect a large number of people. The strains taken for analysis had infected the world in the past 98 years.
The team, led by Rita Cowell, former head of the US National Science Foundation, say the manner of the mutated cholera agents are similar to those observed typically in flu. This would also make the newer strain more virulent.

Public health workers should anticipate emergence of a new strain and prepare themselves accordingly, the researchers reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday. “Comparative genome analysis show small changes in the bug's genetic structure particularly in the path that governs virulence and transmissibility," G Balakrish Nair, the Indian contributor to the research and director of the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Disease (NICD), Kolkata told Deccan Herald.

The world witnessed six cholera pandemics and is currently undergoing the seventh pandemic that began in 1961. Between 2006 and 2008, India reported 7254 cases of cholera. Though Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra contributed to the bulk of the infected cases, about 85 per cent of them were spread over five states in the country, including Karnataka.

Experts, however, say that the estimates grossly understate the seriousness of the condition in India. "Cholera is under-reported in the country," Nair admitted.
During an outbreak, any pathogen -be it cholera or flu- comes under collective pressure of immunity. Mutation in pathogens would enable the organism to deceive the immune system.  Observing the epidemic in India and Bangladesh in 1992, the NICED had reported that cholera strain O1 changes its outer jacket to become O139 to evade the body's immunity against it.

One thing that they should consider is that it's spreading primarily among kids.   To me, that would indicate a possible new flu virus or coronavirus.

I still say by them claiming that it's a mutated Cholera that has made the leap to humans is a very serious thing to say.  It seems like a toss up between a new flu, new coronavirus, or mutated Cholera.    A new coronavirus is really difficult to diagnose in the early stages.   All 3 would be very bad news I suppose.

Thanks for that Albert,

Hog Cholera
Hog cholera is a contagious disease that -- as the name implies -- primarily affects pigs. The virus that causes it is often transmitted through direct contact between healthy swine and infected swine. There are three forms: acute, chronic, and mild.

There's a disease research lab in Papua New Guinea that should be more than equipped to determine what it is.  I just hope that lab wasn't trying some "gain of function" experiment and they had some sort of an accident.    In that report they seem to be semi confident in stating hog cholera may have mutated to humans.  That may be true, but could humans be involved, and are we dealing with a potential lab accident. Fairly presumptuous claim to make.

They have a real sophisticated "research" lab right there in Papua.  Coincidence?   Could they have been doing some gain of function research on hog cholera and tweaked it a bit and had an accident?

Although it doesn’t tell us much more than we already knew, the Indonesian Ministry of Health has posted a statement about the unidentified outbreak in Papua, which has been widely reported to have killed between 30 and 56 children (and possibly some adults) in the past several weeks.

The outbreak is in a remote region already known for having little or no medical infrastructure and a very high infant mortality rate.

We’ve seen reports suggesting that this outbreak may be related to a concurrent die off of pigs and chickens in the area, but nearly all of the accounts are second hand information. Case counts, time spans, and symptoms described are too vague to even hazard a guess as to the cause.

The Indonesia MOH website was offline for sometime yesterday but they posted the following later that day.

Kemenkes Investigate death of 31 children in Papua

Jakarta, 27 November 2015

Menkes Nila Moeloek Farid presents to mourn and concerned over the death of 31 children in Papua, the Government responsible for the incident in Papua. The data we receive from the Department of health of Papua Prov. 31 children under the age of 2 years who died since October 2000 to the present.

I've commissioned Director General of disease control and environmental health (P2PL) to send an investigation team to the site, epidemiologic investigations (verification and investigation), recounts the Menkes (27/11).

Menkes stated that field trips to locations quite far and heavy. The current rapid response team from the Ministry of health surveillance and the R & D team is already leading to the location, i.e. the Nduga Regency Mbua village, Papua Province.

As soon as the team reached the site will report the results of the epidemiological investigation further, hopefully by that time the situation has been more clearly so that we can determine the next step, the light of Menkes.

Related to this, Menkes was already commissioned the Director-General of disease control and environmental health to convene the meeting, currently underway cross-Ministry coordination meeting/related agencies, among others the BNPB, the Ministry of agriculture and the TNI.

The news was broadcast by a public Communication Centre, the Secretariat-General of the Ministry of health of INDONESIA. For more information please contact Halo Kemkes through hotline < codes locale > 1500-586; 081281562620 SMS, facsimile: (021) 52921669, and the contact email address [at] kemkes [dot] go [dot] id. -

That will be scary news if they report that the inhabitants of the village are all dead upon arriving.    This next update with their finds could get a little ugly.    I'm guessing this whole thing is not good at all.  I'm still basing this off the council member of Papua implying that hog Cholera possibly mutating to humans.

The good news is that all pandemic models show that it takes quite awhile for the bug to escape a remote village.   If they determine human to human transmission, they will need to completely cut off that village and not lot anyone leave, including the team investigating.    Hope they understand this could be a one way trip and they will need to ride it out.   If it has mutated to humans as claimed by the council, it's the only option.  Nobody in or out.

Investigate Toddler Death in Papua, Tim Kemenkes Not to Find Outbreak

Sunday, 29/11/2015

Jakarta, Tim surveillance of the Ministry of Health have reached the location of the death of 32 children in Nduga regency, Papua. So far it has not found indications of outbreaks. The team must be accompanied by a translator because local residents can not speak Indonesian discovered the existence of under-five deaths.

However, there is no official data regarding the number of cases and the record time. Estimated mortality rates mentioned are compiling since June 2015. "When the data is confirmed by the pastor to the homes of patients, it turns out that the toddler had died years ago," so as dikitip of Puskomblik release on Sunday (11/29/2015). This is getting a little weird.  First we hear animals and people dropping flies, right in Papua, and the council member claiming hog Cholera mutated to humans, etc.... Now, it's in a remote village and they really had no clue about any of it, and things are like usual there.  It's almost as if someone from the remote village  hiked to town, made some crazy claims, and the council jumped on board screaming the shy is falling, and maybe for no reason at all?   I guess they made up the story to bring aid to the village.   Or maybe the guy didn't have translator with him when he made it town, and the council just jumped to conclusion.  Good grief.

Indonesian MOH Update On Papua Outbreak Investigation

With growing media and public attention and criticisms (see VOA Indonesia Commission: Government Not Serious Death Case Handle 41 Children in Papua) lodged by local observers, the Indonesian Ministry of Health is in the uncomfortable position of having to respond without having any real answers.

On Saturday we saw the initial Indonesian MOH Statement On Papua Outbreak, which basically said they were aware of the reports and were sending in a team of investigators.

Today we get a much longer report that describes the rigors of getting into the rugged back country, the living conditions (lack of sanitation, clean water or footwear, shared quarters with livestock, etc.), and the meager medical resources afforded to this region.

Complicating matters, the inhabitants of this remote region only understand  local Papuan dialects – not Indonesia.  The resulting narrative is murky, at best.  And of course the machine translation doesn’t help.

Sample have been taken, and lab tests will hopefully reveal more.   For now, the Papuan outbreak remains unquantified, and unidentified.  But at least, with this outbreak getting local media attention, we are getting regular reports from the MOH.

Infant Mortality in Papua Investigated, Lab Test Done Now Awaiting Results

Jakarta, Team of the Ministry of Health has conducted a review of epidemiology-related death of 32 children in nduga regency, Papua. Ministry of Health teams taking blood samples to investigate the cause of this mysterious death.

"The team we have taken a blood sample, sample of sputum, swab the throat there is also swab the anus. Sample complementary including land and water were also taken to investigate the exact cause of what," said Director General of Disease Control and Environmental Health (P2PL) Kemenekes, Dr. HM Subuh, met at the Hotel Bidakara, Jl Gatot Subroto, Jewel, South Jakarta, Monday (11/30/2015) night.

"the samples first arrived at 3 pm. The fastest 24 hours we know so maybe tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday afternoon) we can know the result," he added.

"We are confident it is a virus just what virus we do not know yet. It could be that attack the digestive enteroviruses, retroviruses or pneumonia. We are waiting for lab results to be sure," he said again.

Dr. Subuh also doubted the claim saying an epidemic or outbreak of disease. Ministry of Health of the team's findings, there is no mass death suddenly that becomes a marker epidemic or outbreak of disease.

"There's no data there, people rarely go to health centers for treatment because he considered it if you have severe pain. His account is crisscrossing also a matter of how the victim," he said.

"Someone died in June last year, no one died four months ago, some say the death of October. So still we find out. So there is no outbreak and not sudden death many children in a short time," he concluded.

So basically, 32 Children did not suddenly die, and this is over span of 6 months since last June, and there is no outbreak whatsoever.   I would say this got blown a little out of proportion.

Firstly there is a virus outbreak this is quite clear it has caused a unusually high number of deaths in pigs, birds and children that nobody can deny, it's a remote village in the middle of nowhere very convenient for bio-experimentation, I don't like this, a local official seems to know a awful lot about some unknown village in the jungle ??? the people are so remote they don't even speak the recognized Indonesian language therefore they didn't run into town and start making wild or crazy claims, this looks and sounds like a cover-up to me.

It pays to keep in mind that NOBODY wants to admit they have a deadly viral outbreak, it scares the tourists away

I am looking forward to the test results which I must admit could take sometime especially if this is a mutated strain, we will just have to wait patiently.

Will update AFT as soon as there is any news about this mystery virus.

Weak Monitoring System Diseases

Results of laboratory tests on specimens discovered pneumococcus virus and Japanese encephalitis.

Friday, December 4th, 2015

Jakarta - The case of the death of dozens of children under five years of age or under five in Papua reflecting weak monitoring systems and response to health problems in the region, especially in remote areas. Therefore, regions need to intensify monitoring of disease with fast response over a wide range of cases.

Professor of Public Health Sciences University of Gadjah Mada Laksono Trisnantoro, when contacted from Jakarta, Thursday (4/12), said each city / county should have a system surveillance and response. In that system, monitoring the area of death and disease with rapid response to the case.

"Ideally, there epidemiologist in each city or county, but the limited number of experts," said Laksono. Many areas with weak surveillance systems and response, not only in Papua. In fact, in some areas in Java, surveillance and response to health concerns weak.

Inaccessible

When contacted separately, health specialists Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI) in Papua, Dr. Michael Bantung, explained, data collection and reporting become a problem in Papua.

"The issue of data reporting related to the difficulty of access. The coastal area is more affordable than the mountains. In some areas, the data entering the district health centers after collected 6 months or a year ahead," he said.

Nduga regency, where dozens of deaths of children under five, only reachable by plane. WVI target areas of weak data collection and reporting among Jayawijaya, Tolikara, and Lanny Jaya triggering doubts the validity of the data collected in the province.

Director General of Disease Control and Environmental Health of the Ministry of Health M Dawn explained, PHC Mbuwa, nduga regency, Papua, no recorded deaths of children under five. As a result, the Ministry of Health difficult team to investigate the truth of the information 31 deaths of children under five in the region.

"It should record the health center. It is a failure and must be addressed. The range of the government's control to health centers Mbuwa far away," he said, in Yogyakarta yesterday.

Mbuwa at the health center, there are four health workers, consists of 1 doctor, 2 nurses and 1 midwife. However, they did not play optimally because the distances between villages far and geographical conditions intolerable. On the other hand, some residents Mbuwa assume the symptoms not the disease because it has not been severe.

It led to the recording of deaths of children under five do not run, including reporting from the village to the clinic. Therefore, the Ministry of Health team difficult to get valid data. Deaths of children under five are known to the team that was the case last year and 4 months ago.

While the second team of the Ministry of Health arrived in the area and will serve the basic health and take another specimen. Results of laboratory tests on specimens discovered pneumococcus virus and Japanese encephalitis.

According to the Head of the Center for Biomedical and Health Basic Technology Research and Development Agency of Health Ministry of Health Pretty Multihartina, all specimens of Mbuwa checked in Balitbangkes.

I'm a little confused as to what those results may indicate.

Pneumococcus virus

Lost in translation I was a bit confused myself with "pneumococcus virus" as I though that was a bacteria after a quick check I can confrim that it is indeed bacterial and not a viral in nature.

More than 90 types of pneumococcus bacteria (Streptococcus pneumoniae) are
known nowadays, some of which cause diseases such as meningitis, pneumonia
or infections which spread throughout the body (sepsis). Pneumococcus microbes
can be found in the nose or throat without causing any discomforts or they can
cause mild illnesses, such as otitis, sinusitis and bronchitis.
For children under 5 years of age, and especially under 2 years of age, and for the
elderly the risk of getting this disease is higher.

In younger children infections caused by pneumococcus bacteria are often lethal because their immune systems don't appear to be stimulated unlike adults.
The most serious forms of pneumococcus infections are more common in people of any age
suffering from particular conditions, such as diseases which weaken the immune
system, malfunction of the spleen, chronic medical conditions of lungs, liver and
heart, diabetes, and in people using cochlear implants for serious hearing impairment.

Japanese encephalitis

Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus, a flavivirus, is closely related to West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis viruses. JE virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected Culex species mosquitoes, particularly Culex tritaeniorhynchus.

The virus is maintained in a cycle between mosquitoes and vertebrate hosts, primarily pigs and wading birds. Humans are incidental or dead-end hosts, because they usually do not develop high enough concentrations of JE virus in their bloodstreams to infect feeding mosquitoes.

JE virus transmission occurs primarily in rural agricultural areas, often associated with rice production and flooding irrigation. In some areas of Asia, these conditions can occur near urban centers.

In temperate areas of Asia, JE virus transmission is seasonal. Human disease usually peaks in the summer and fall. In the subtropics and tropics, transmission can occur year-round, often with a peak during the rainy season.

It would appear the location and climatic conditions of Indonesia favor mosquitoes and hence a high incidence of JE, incidentally JE is believed to have originated in the Indonesia-Malaysia region and evolved there into five different genotypes which spread across Asia, therefore it is not surprising that JE pops up in the test results, the main driver here appears to be pneumococcus bacteria which is consistent with the symptoms described wheezing, lethargy and high mortality in the under 5 year olds but I also would expect at least some incidence of morbidity in older adults particularly those with comorbidities ????.

The JE outbreak is usually fatal to pigs primarily due to swine encephalitis, I am not sure about avain thou, but this may explain the high incidence of animal die off.

You are probably spot on with co-morbidities: both within the populace - and also the current diseases themselves.

Known:    Flu (virus) weakens the immune system and can lead to pneumonia (bacterial).
Perhaps: Japanese Encephalitis (virus) does the same among its survivors.

Incidentally, there are some types of viral pneumonia as well, although, obviously, these are not pneumococcal (coccii being a bacterial shape/family).

Anyway, hair-splitting on my part aside, thank you for the updates and clarification, Guest.

Today, the MOH has published their findings, which indicates that an outbreak of Pertussis - complicated by pneumonia - among already malnourished, poorly housed, and vulnerable children has led to this deadly outbreak.

Getting a little interesting Guest.  It almost makes me think that your claim to a "cover-up" may hold some more accuracy.  Not only have the cases of deaths doubled rather quickly, but they're back to calling it a "mystery disease".  Thought they had it figured out.   This is in fact starting to smell like a cover-up in which they are trying to contain an outbreak.

I would be curious to know what types of pets they are referring to.  I would say dog flu or cat flu, but I believe they would eat most of those common animals we call pets.  Not sure what types of pets they may have there.   Maybe a pet chicken.   Big smile       Although, because they refer to them as pets, it doesn't mean they eventually won't be eaten.  The transmission from the type of animal is very key in this.

And 28 more dying?
