Mysterious death of pigs, dogs creates panic in Odisha’s Malkangiri

Malkangiri: Residents of Badigata village under Kalimela block in Odisha’s Malkangiri district had the shock of their lives on Sunday when they spotted several pigs and stray dogs found dead mysteriously.

According to reports, nearly hundred pigs and ten stray dogs have died in the last three days leaving the locals in a state of panic.

Pigs were suddenly taking ill while roaming in the open and subsequently dying within hours.

The exact cause of the deaths is yet to be ascertained.

After the number of deaths grew, a scientific team from Cuttack-based Animal Disease Research Institute, rushed to the village today to take stock of the situation.

They collected the blood samples of the animals for examination.

“It’s too early to say anything about the reason of deaths. It will be clear only after examination of their blood samples in the lab,” said Prabhu Kalyan Tripathy, a member of the scientific team, who visited the village.

Meanwhile, the District Veterinary officials also swung into action to ascertain the reason behind such mass deaths.

The mysterious death of these animals occurred at a time when the State is already in grip of swine flu and dengue.

So far nine people have died due to swine flu and two of dengue.
