New York sues Trump Foundation, alleging 'extensive' lawbreakingNew York's attorney general is suing the Trump Foundation, as well as Donald Trump and his children, alleging "extensive and persistent" lawbreaking. Barbara Underwood said the charitable foundation had engaged in "unlawful political co-ordination" designed to influence the 2016 election. The lawsuit seeks to dissolve the foundation and $2.8m (£2.1m) in restitution. The foundation denied the charges, calling them politically motivated. The president hit back at the lawsuit on Twitter, saying that "sleazy New York Democrats" were "doing everything they can to sue me". He vowed he would not settle the case. Skip Twitter post by @realDonaldTrump
End of Twitter post by @realDonaldTrump The attorney general is also seeking to bar the president and three of his adult children, Donald Jr, Eric and Ivanka, from serving on the board of any New York-based charity, "in light of misconduct and total lack of oversight". She has referred the case to the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Election Commission, she says. What is the state attorney general alleging?Ms Underwood filed a petition at the New York Supreme Court in Manhattan on Thursday, Mr Trump's 72nd birthday. It accuses the foundation and its directors - Mr Trump and his three eldest children - of unlawfully co-ordinating with the Trump presidential campaign, repeated self-dealing transactions, and violating laws under which non-profit organisations must operate. In a statement, Ms Underwood said Mr Trump had illegally instructed the foundation to provide support to his presidential campaign by using the foundation's name and funds it raised to promote the campaign. The petition also claims that Mr Trump used charitable assets to pay off legal obligations, to promote his own businesses and to purchase personal items, including a painting of himself. Skip Twitter post by @NewYorkStateAG
End of Twitter post by @NewYorkStateAG What have the Trump Foundation and the Trumps said? The Trump Foundation issued a statement denying the charges and accusing the attorney general of holding its $1.7 million in remaining funds "hostage for political gain". Ms Underwood is a Democrat. The president described the suit as "ridiculous". The younger Trumps have yet to comment publicly. How did this come about? The lawsuit announced on Thursday is the culmination of a two-year investigation, which began under the previous New York attorney general, Eric Schneiderman, Ms Underwood said. Mr Schneiderman resigned last month after several former girlfriends accused him of physical abuse. In October 2016 Mr Schneiderman ordered the Trump Foundation to stop fundraising in New York, after finding it had no proper registration. President-elect Trump vowed to shut the charitable foundation down in December 2016, to avoid "even the appearance" of any conflict of interest. The Trump Foundation lawsuit adds to Mr Trump's legal challenges, which include a wide-ranging special counsel investigation into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. Special Counsel Robert Mueller has indicted several of Mr Trump's associates and raided the home and office of the president's long-time lawyer and fixer, Michael Cohen.
'A new front opened up'New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood has opened a new front in the ongoing criminal investigations into Donald Trump and his empire. Allegations of misdeeds connected to the Trump Foundation had swirled during the 2016 presidential elections, but the topic had been overshadowed during the early days of the Trump presidency. That may be about to change. Administration officials, from the president on down, will certainly attempt to brand this as yet another politically motivated investigation of an ideological adversary - new witches but the same hunt. Nevertheless, as New York Attorney General, Ms Underwood has significant investigatory and prosecutorial power, and if she starts looking into some of Mr Trump's more questionable charitable activities, there's no telling what she might turn up. At the very least, it appears the Trump world's celebrations of former Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's disgrace were a bit premature. Ms Underwood may not be as outspokenly anti-Trump as her predecessor, but she appears to be equally - or more - aggressive where it counts, in the courtroom. What details emerged in the court filing?Thursday's 41-page document filed with the NY Supreme Court spells out a range of alleged violations of laws concerning non-profit organisations, dating back more than a decade. The investigation apparently found that the foundation was "little more than an empty shell that functions with no oversight by its board of directors". The board had not met since 1999, despite being legally required to meet annually, and did not oversee the foundation's activities "in any way", the document says. Mr Trump, who has not contributed any personal funds to the foundation since 2008, was the sole signatory on the foundation's bank accounts and approved all of its grants. Several pages of the document focus on a charity fundraiser for veterans in Iowa in January 2016, which Mr Trump chose to hold instead of taking part in a TV debate with other Republican presidential hopefuls ahead of the influential state's caucuses. More than $2.8m was donated to the Trump Foundation at that event. The petition alleges that those funds raised from the public were used to promote Mr Trump's campaign for the presidency, in particular in the Iowa nominating caucuses. The lawsuit also claims that the foundation paid $100,000 (£75,000) to settle legal claims against Mr Trump's Mar-A-Lago resort, $158,000 to settle claims against one of his golf clubs, and $10,000 to purchase a painting of Mr Trump to hang at another of his golf clubs. The purchase of the painting was an example of one of "at least five self-dealing transactions" which violate tax regulations on non-profit charities, the statement said. "As our investigation reveals, the Trump Foundation was little more than a cheque book for payments from Mr Trump or his businesses to nonprofits, regardless of their purpose of legality," Ms Underwood said. "This is not how private foundations should function." US & CanadaComey 'broke FBI norms but not biased'

Scott Pruitt's biggest lie blown wide open: He requested 24/7 security on his very first day
https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/5/15/1764338/-Scott-Pruitt-s-biggest-lie-blown-wide-open-He-requested-24-7-security-on-his-very-first-day Scott Pruitt has one all-purpose excuse for his first-class flights, his 20-man security team, his taking over an entire floor of the EPA building, and his hiding of many facets of his schedule and activities: Threats. He’s claimed that he was subject to threats that were so bad, so “unprecedented” that it justified surrounding the EPA administrator with $3 million in personal security, taking military jets across the country, first-class flights around the world, and in every way making sure he never has to associate with the people who are paying his bills. Every last word of it has turned out to be a lie.
And now it’s absolutely clear: No one demanded Pruitt’s kid-glove treatment except Pruitt, and he made that demand from the moment he came in the door. In response to a letter sent by Democratic Senators Sheldon WhiteHouse and Thomas Carper, the inspector general gave the actual timing of Pruitt’s security and the actual origin of the request: Every last word of it has turned out to be a lie. is there even one single decent honest person in the Trump Cabinet ??? a fish rots from the head down |

According to old Donald Trump tweets, John Bolton shouldn't be US National Security AdviserBy Anne Barker Updated about an hour ago PHOTO: New US National Security Adviser John Bolton is regarded as "controversial even in Republican circles". (Reuters: Joshua Roberts) John Bolton's appointment as US National Security Adviser should have been impossible, if Donald Trump's tweets were set in stone. In 2013 — long before he was a presidential candidate — Mr Trump tweeted that "all former Bush administration officials should have zero standing on Syria. Iraq was a waste of blood and treasure."
Not only will he influence US policy in Syria and Iraq, but more immediately and more worryingly, his appointment signals a much tougher US stance against Iran and North Korea. Even by Bush administration standards he was tough, variously described as a "hawk's hawk" and the most "hawkish of hawks" in Washington. Mr Bolton is known for his support of using military force against the two rogue states. As the then-top arms control official, he was a staunch advocate of the 2003 war in Iraq and supported the aggressive use of American power in foreign policy. NBC News White House correspondent Geoff Bennett says John Bolton is "controversial even in Republican circles."
"He was part of the Bush-Cheney crew that claimed Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. "He's also a leading hawkish voice on North Korea." PHOTO: US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton raises his hand to vote against a UN Security Council resolution condemning Israel's recent attacks in Gaza at the UN headquarters in New York November 11, 2006. (Reuters: Keith Bedford) Risks of war with Iran, North Korea now 'significantly greater'New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof says John Bolton is not just a hawk. He's a "pterosaur." "The risks of a war with Iran or North Korea are now significantly greater than they were this morning," he says. As a regular media commentator Mr Bolton has advocated hardline positions on stopping Pyongyang from developing and using nuclear weapons against the US. He was once removed from a US delegation taking part in six-party talks on North Korea after he called then-leader Kim Jong-il a "tyrannical dictator" who ran a country where "life is hell". The North Korean government responded to his exclusion by saying "such a human scum and bloodsucker is not entitled to take part in the talks." Mr Bolton has also advocated getting rid of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, a pact that Mr Trump has opposed. His appointment as Mr Trump's third national security adviser continues a recent trend towards more hawkish advisers likely to support the President's foreign policy views. And it comes at a crucial time for the Trump administration, as it prepares to make key decisions on both North Korea and Iran. Mr Bolton is likely to add a harder edge to the upcoming talks between Mr Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un. Earlier this year he appeared to oppose such talks happening at all. "If we pay heed to the lessons of history, talking to North Korea would be fruitless," Mr Bolton tweeted in February. But he shares Donald Trump's views on the 2015 deal to rein in Iran's nuclear ambitions. In January, Bolton described the deal as a "strategic mistake." "This deal needs to be abrogated and America must craft a new reality that reflects the actions of the Iranian regime," he wrote. Mr Bolton also supports Mr Trump's controversial decision to open a US embassy in Jerusalem, despite condemnation from Palestinians and world leaders. But not all of Mr Bolton's views coincide with those of the President. Donald Trump has repeatedly said the US war in Iraq was a mistake. And on Russia, the new National Security Adviser has long voiced hardline views against Moscow, which could sit at odds with a President who openly admires Russian President Vladimir Putin. Conservative hardliners have praised Mr Bolton for his tough stance on foreign policy but he is also seen as one of the most divisive figures in conservative circles.
In 2005 he was appointed US Ambassador to the United Nations, despite being one of the UN's fiercest critics. Back in 1994 he was quoted saying the US was the world's "only real power." "The Secretariat building in New York has 38 storeys. If it lost 10 storeys, it wouldn't make a bit of difference," he said. Mr Bolton was forced to resign from the UN job the following year after Democrats refused to support his nomination in the Senate. He has shown similar disdain for other multilateral institutions, including the International Criminal Court. A divisive appointmentThe US Vice President Mike Pence has described Bolton as a "highly respected American patriot." "With him as Nat Sec Adv, @POTUS will continue to keep America strong and secure."
Republican Senator Marco Rubio says Mr Bolton is "an excellent choice who will do a great job." But critics on the other side of politics have slammed the appointment. Democratic senator Bernie Sanders describes Mr Bolton as "too extreme to be confirmed as UN ambassador in 2005 and is absolutely the wrong person to be national security adviser now." Fellow Democrat Betty McCollum tweeted that Mr Bolton was a "discredited architect of the Iraq War" and his "appointment puts our national security at risk." Ordinary Americans too have derided President Trump's announcement. Many have referenced his 2013 tweet opposing the appointment of any former Bush administration officials. "Too bad DT doesn't agree with DT anymore," tweeted one. "You just hired someone who is likely to start another wasteful war!," tweeted another. "There really is a tweet for every occasion," said a third. |
