Sooo....Dodd-Frank is being repealed. Now we have to trust that Wall Street will regulate itself. Just like they failed to do in 1987 and 2008. And if the next financial crisis happens with Trump at the helm, we'll be relying on a guy with a bought and paid for "Gentleman's Degree" in economics and a string of failed business ventures to prevent a second depression.
Awesome. |

Have been silent now for quite a long time until today.
Just finished watching the news for what is a huge win for our president Donald Trump. This was historic - and from a regime threatening to blow us up with nuke to a meeting and a handshake and working together for peace - I can say and mean again - he is one of the BEST President's in America in the last 50 years. The lowest job rate in decades, especially for blacks. Many of his highest and most influential people working with him are women and with the recent approval of the first female head of the CIA in history - we are seeing a change with a president who is more than promises - but actions. We may be on the verge of the end of the Korean War - a re-unification of Korea into a profitable richer more successful part of the world economy than ever before. History in the making. I am proud of our president - the economy - the jobs - addressing the issues that need to be handled and doing something about it. Medclinician |

Proud? Really? CO2 up, Black lung at record levels, jobs up but wages down. Healtcare almost nonexistant except for the richest? A President who sexually assaults women? A President who has sex with a sex worker whilst his wife is pregnant? A racist President? A President with no understanding of how much damage he has done to America's international reputation? And yet you are proud of him because he is meeting with a jumped up dictator who is doing his reputation the world of good but has only a very slim chance of producing anything usefull! WHY?

Thank you Carbon, but I am just getting started. Now I have calmed down I can tackle the summit itself. Trump has (possibly) scored a small win. He is 'talking it up' for self aggrandisement. But the very fact that there was a meeting is historic. Then the trading started. Kim achieved a huge win in that Trump agreed to stop the war games in the region. He scored another in the opportunities back home to sell this as a propaganda coop. He can take home the film of the meeting and say: "Look I talk as an equal with the leader of the West." Believe me, that will not help relax the iron grip he holds over the North Korean people. This is the kind of acceptance (apparent or real is unimportant) all dictators crave. It helps maintain control! Kim also said he agreed that de-nuclearisation was a goal. Of course, he agreed to no inspections, timetable or specifics. Without those things the agreement is just words - but that will not stop Herr Trumpenfuhrer from claiming it a huge win. Just like the dictator he met, he can use that for propaganda - and he will. What a wonderful, powerfull, historic win for both sides - in the propaganda stakes.

I could go on: Jobs up, yes, but wages
down and most of the legislation to protect workers in the workplace has
been removed. Then, if you are unlucky enough to be injured in this
riskier environment (the employer having dropped your healthcare - as
the loss of Obamacare no longer forced him to do his bit and on the
lower wages you coud not afford any) you are just left to rot or die on
welfare/skid row. The rise in black lung, I keep harping on about, is a
case in point. I ecpect you are retired, Med, so no problem there. Racial
divides and profiling are returning your country toward segregarion.
Being black in America today seems almost as bad as it was 30 years
ago. Not everything Obama did was all that good, but he did do some
good stuff. Trump appears to be determined to sweep all of it away,
regardless of usefullness. Taking everything else into account, I can
only conclude that is because Obama was not completely white. But that is ok 'coz you are,. Eh, Med? CO2
ts at record levels and the seas are starting to rise. It will soon be
bad news for Florida, but not quite yet. It is already disasterous for
Samoa. That's OK, you don't live there, Med. Would you pander to
Kim? It is not as if the propaganda coop would affect you personally,
You are not a North Korean after all. What I am trying to say is: '"I'm alright Jack" is nothing to be proud of.' I
can't comment on your opinion of Trump's sexual proclivities, I won't
even guess at yours. I can't comment on collusion with the Russians, as
not all our politically active people avoid it either. To think Trump
avoided it is to fail to understand how persasive Russian agents can be,
but that is not to say he is guilty of anything other than a moment of
naivete. Everyone on the planet is guilty of that sometimes. I
can point out that what is said, is not necessarily true. That is the
case with all politicians, but rather more so in Trump's case. I can
also say that improved finances for the country don't necessarily
translate into better lives for most people. They always benefit the
rich however. Oh yes! Trump is certainly one of those! |

Trump Was Outfoxed in SingaporeIt sure looks as if President Trump was hoodwinked in Singapore. Trump made a huge concession — the suspension of military exercises with South Korea. That’s on top of the broader concession of the summit meeting itself, security guarantees he gave North Korea and the legitimacy that the summit provides his counterpart, Kim Jong-un. Within North Korea, the “very special bond” that Trump claimed to have formed with Kim will be portrayed this way: Kim forced the American president, through his nuclear and missile tests, to accept North Korea as a nuclear equal, to provide security guarantees to North Korea, and to cancel war games with South Korea that the North has protested for decades. In exchange for these concessions, Trump seems to have won astonishingly little. In a joint statement, Kim merely “reaffirmed” the same commitment to denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula that North Korea has repeatedly made since 1992. |

No surprise there - without an army of high powered lawyers, and his usual bully/litigate/stall tactics, he's a mediocre deal maker at best.

There is no way ANYTHING concrete was going to be conceded by NK at this summit. All that was possible was opening the door, whoever was doing the negotiating. I am surprised at the cessation of the "Wargames", but I honestly do not know if this is a good or bad thing. We will have to wait and see. It was rather rude not to let the South Korean allies know that said games were on the negotiating table, but even they seem happy enough. So, neither win or fowl there. It was a truly wonderful publicity stunt by both sides. That is the only thing I can say with any certainty.

Ps. We only have Kim's word that he destroyed his nuclear research facility. Sure he blew something up. But, with no nuclear armament specialists at the bang, just journalists with very carefully managed access to any source of information, he could have been destroying anything at all. Even if it was a research facility, which I doubt, the research has been done already and who is to say there were not more facilities?

The general analysis I am hearing here is that the meeting was a win for Kim, with Trump giving up lots of things and getting nothing concrete in its place. I do hope that it is an opening for other changes in the region, but as yet it is just a photo opportunity for a leader who in the days before blow off his most important allies. Dutch Josh on his 3rd World War thread, has a good comment on some of the other important players in the mix (China, Russia, South Korea - plus Japan). The complexity of the issues which include the possibility of the reuniting of the Korean peninsular must involve more people and can not be hashed out in a one to one meeting. The BBC has an interesting write up .... not all conservatives are in agreement on the "success"

Both sides are guilty of that charge. To the Trumpians everything Obama did was crap. To the Obamians everything Trump does is crap. I am neither. Obama made a few mistakes and Trump got a few things right. On average however, Trump does seem to accrue more fails and embarrasments. Overall, this one seems exceptionally vile, inhuman and disgusting; (and that is a big score to top or should I say Trump). Of course, history could prove me wrong here; he might make it work yet. But, I am not holding my breath.

Have we seen this all before? The Trump-Kim summit statement, annotatedPosted about 2 hours ago After months of anticipation and false starts, US President Donald Trump's meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore culminated in the signing of a joint statement. Mr Trump said the summit went "better than anybody could have expected" and when asked what made this time different, Mr Trump said America had a different administration and a different president. But there was nonetheless a sense of deja vu in the air — North Korea has agreed to concessions in the past, before abruptly reneging on its commitments and continuing its pursuit of nuclear weapons. Previous agreements include the Agreed Framework in 1994, negotiated under then president Bill Clinton, and the six-party joint statement in 2005, negotiated under then president George W Bush. So what exactly is new? And what have we seen before? We enlisted the help of North Korea experts Justin Hastings, an associate professor in the Department of Government and International Relations at Sydney University, and Leonid Petrov, a Korean studies expert at the Australian National University, to help us answer those questions in the highlighted sections below. The full statement, annotatedPresident Donald J Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong-un of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) held a first, historic summit in Singapore on June 12, 2018. President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un conducted a comprehensive, in-depth, and sincere exchange of opinions on the issues related to the establishment of new US-DPRK relations and the building of a lasting and robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula. President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK, and Chairman Kim Jong-un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula. Convinced that the establishment of new US-DPRK relations will contribute to the peace and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula and of the world, and recognising that mutual confidence-building can promote the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un state the following: 3. Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work towards complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula. 4. The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified. Having acknowledged that the US-DPRK summit — the first in history — was an epochal event of great significance and overcoming decades of tensions and hostilities between the two countries and for the opening of a new future, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un commit to implement the stipulations in this joint statement fully and expeditiously. The United States and the DPRK commit to hold follow-on negotiations led by the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and a relevant high-level DPRK official, at the earliest possible date, to implement the outcomes of the US-DPRK summit. President Donald J Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong-un of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea have committed to cooperate for the development of new US-DPRK relations and for the promotion of peace, prosperity, and security of the Korean Peninsula and of the world. Singapore summit echoes Hitler-Chamberlain meeting in 1938, but offering 'lots of great condos' in our timeUpdated Thu at 10:56am Media player: "Space" to play, "M" to mute, "left" and "right" to seek. Four days after he took office, US President Donald Trump made good on a campaign pledge and withdrew the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership. He had derided the painstakingly negotiated 12-nation treaty as a "potential disaster for our country" because of the harm it would do to manufacturing jobs. But now, in his meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, Mr Trump has set off on what may become a new type of Trans-Pacific Partnership, this time under his own terms.
Only this one will tie the United States to a Communist country with which it was at war six decades ago, and also possibly open the door to more ties to another Communist country, China, with which the US only re-established relations under another Republican president, Richard M Nixon, in 1972. Mr Trump's audacity is still reverberating in political circles in the United States and elsewhere. But he was perhaps unintentionally clear in at least one of his aims for the detente with North Korea. Although it was ostensibly portrayed as an effort to rid North Korea of nuclear weapons, Mr Trump unveiled another goal in a news conference after the meeting in Singapore.
He went on, "You could have the best hotels in the world right there. Think of it from a real estate perspective. You have South Korea, you have China, and they own the land in the middle. How bad is that, right? It's great." Echoes of Adolf Hitler meeting in 1938It was a revealing moment, but it also brought to mind another meeting between a Western leader and another strongman, this one from Germany, that took place 80 years ago. < width="100%" border="0" webkitallowfullscreen="" mozallowfullscreen="" allowfullscreen="" allowtransparency="" ="http://www.youtube.com//hQ95ffnU4Sw?iv_load_policy=3&modestbranding=1&showinfo=0&rel=0&origin=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.abc.net.au&list=&start=0&enablejsapi=1" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; word-wrap: break-word; border-width: 0px; border-style: initial; display: block; : ; height: 191.25px;"> YOUTUBE: Chamberlain declares 'I believe it is peace in our time' in 1938In September, 1938, British prime minister Neville Chamberlain travelled to Munich, along with French prime minister Eduard Daladier and Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, to meet with Adolf Hitler. The meeting resulted in an agreement that allowed Germany to annex a portion of Czechoslovakia, after Germany had reclaimed the Rhineland and took control of Austria. It was clear that Germany would take control of the German-speaking Sudetenland by force, unless European leaders would get out of his way. Chamberlain agreed, thinking that war had been avoided. And in one of the biggest miscalculations in history, he told a crowd gathered at 10 Downing Street: "I believe it is peace for our time." In fact, Germany's ambitions did not end there, and Britain declared war on Germany a year later. A number of analysts said on Tuesday that Mr Trump was miscalculating by agreeing to a number of steps, such as ending joint military exercises with South Korea, without significant concessions from Mr Kim. Trump ditching allies for new friends in AsiaThere were reports that Chinese officials knew about the step before the US informed its embassy in South Korea and, most certainly, before the US told other allies about the step. But Mr Trump, in just this past week, has shown that he is dispensing with America's traditional partners in the West, and turning to a new set of friends, namely those who have welcomed him in Asia. His spat with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over steel and aluminium tariffs threatens to explode into a bigger trade war over auto parts. That tangle and his running disagreements with French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron over climate change prompted Mr Trump's refusal to sign a joint G7 statement, leave Charlevoix, Quebec early, and fire off angry tweets from Air Force One on his way to Singapore to rendezvous with Mr Kim. His smiles, and arm pats and handshakes there were a sharp contrast to the stormy scene he left behind him. Media player: "Space" to play, "M" to mute, "left" and "right" to seek. Trump supporters watch their guy goAll of it was exactly what Mr Trump's supporters want to see. First, the belligerent candidate they put into office acting in trademark fashion, and then pulling off the kind of public spectacle with the North Korean dictator that no other president would attempt, let alone tolerate. Even Mr Trump, however, knows that his bold action may end up in failure, just as Chamberlain's agreement with Hitler blew up in Europe's face 80 years ago. North Korea has said numerous times that it was willing to discuss denuclearisation, only to fail to follow through. Meanwhile, it has continued to test nuclear weapons, which are the main leverage it has over its Asian neighbours, as well as the West. Mr Trump, despite his euphoria, seemed to be setting the bar low. And in a statement displaying the brashness his biographers and other journalists have come to know, he admitted his gamble with Mr Kim could be for naught. "I may be wrong," Mr Trump said during the news conference. "I may stand before you in six months and say, 'Hey, I was wrong'. "I don't know that I'll ever admit that," he said with a smile, "but I'll find some kind of an excuse." He may like to brush up on his World War II history. Chamberlain, as Britain headed into war with Germany, told the House of Commons:

North Korea is giving up it's nukes? Probably not. They've been promising that for years. And the "pledge" that was signed is practically worthless and heavily favors North Korea anyway. They negotiated far better apparently. How ironic.
And I'm not sure that starting negotiations by threatening to destroy North Korea with nuclear weapons is really in the spirit of the Nobel Peace Prize. Bringing about peace (something this is unlikely to achieve) with shotgun wedding tactics might be a stretch. It looks like Rudy Guliani is letting Manafort know it's okay to keep quiet and take one for the team. He suggested today that it can be "cleaned up" with some presidential pardons. If that isn't witness tampering, I don't know what is. |

Nice to meet a fellow Huxley fan. You can't blame the gammas though, Carbon. Thank Ford! They weren't bred to think.

Well said, JD! a) NK give up nukes? Never. They will talk and negotiate as a way of buying time to build even more. They can blow up their testing sites = now that they have a proven warhead design, they no longer need to test - it would be a waste of fissile material. b) Manafort may be keeping quiet because he is afraid of what the Russians will do to him & his family if he says too much: But Manafort has refused to do so (flip). Even though he’s facing 25 charges that could easily put him in prison for the rest of his life — and even though the evidence for many if not most of these charges appears quite strong — he’s pleaded not guilty to everything, and has given no public indication he’s considering flipping. Why? Again, one possible explanation is he just has nothing to flip with. Either he wasn’t involved in collusion or he has nothing on Trump or anybody else Mueller cares about. Alternatively, maybe Manafort is just holding out hope that he can beat the charges. A darker possibility is that, given an apparent series of Russia-linked assassinationsin the West, Manafort fears violent reprisals against himself or his family should he give information implicating Russians. |

Yeah, Carbon! Always wished I could do all that. Every Windham I could get my hands on (John Beynon too).

Believe it or not, my childhood best friend's mum used to read him as bedtime stories. I was only there for a few "episodes" from each book so I had to find out for myself. My own mum addicted me to Huxley and Orwell. Stupidly, I did not think of mysef as a syfy fan until I was 11 when a book of short stories led me on to Asimov - my first love! Then the addiction took hold big time! When my teenage female peers were reading Mills & Boon, I was reading McCaffrey and Edmund Cooper. I tried a bit of fantasy - but it was all too childish! I think I was in the true golden age of syfy which those early giants had given birth to. I had Aldiss Ballard, Simak, Dick, Dickson, Asimov, Coney and Holdstock - whom I was lucky enough to meet. Then came cyberpunk and my love faltered for a while, I even cheated with a fantasy writer (Pratchett). But it is back with a new field of writers, which sadly, I never have the time to read. Sigh!

Ps. The list is short for lack of space, not writers.

I grew up with my head buried in stuff from the golden ages of science fiction - Asimov, Heinlein, EE 'Doc' Smith, Pohl, Del Rey, Anderson, Bradbury, Clarke, etc. I love the newer stuff, but there was something about that period. Often totally improbable with science that makes no sense now, but awesome nonetheless.

It was good for the science of its day. For instance, my favourite short story is "Dust Rag" by Hal Clement. Awesome! Those writers were all on my list, but I forgot to add Bob Shaw and Harlan Elison in. (SLAP WRIST!) Sigh! Glory Days!

"Childhood's End" by Arthur C Clarke (and later "Songs of Distant Earth") made one hell of an impression when I first read it at the age of ten or so. Lots of really good stuff out there that will transport you a long, long way from everyday life.

Can't argue with any of them, Bernard and I are srill occasionally laughing at "Elephants in elevator shoes flying paper aeroplanes!" I would like to add "The Alien Way" By Gordon Dickson which is still the best 'why would an alien be alien' theory I have ever encountered and (just because I am female and even in syfy love a tragic romance) "Hello Summer Goodbye" By Michael Coney. 'And, I just can't resist a twist in the tale. I get a bit annoyed at some modern stuff, especially films! Syfy blockbusters usually colossaly dissapoint, through bad (or even nonexistant) science and glaring plot holes. Whilst all my friends were ooh-ing and aaah-ing at the opening sequence of Star Wars, I was bemoaning the lack of realism, shouting in the cinema: "YOU CAN'T HAVE ANY SOUND IN SPACE!!!" It quite spoiled the franchise for me. |
