May 2018 A ‘biblical’ virus named HTLV-1, believed to be the ancient cousin of HIV, has swept across Northern Australia infecting thousands of resident with leukemia and lymphoma. The rate of infection of HTLV-1 has already surpassed 40 percent among adults in Australia, according to reports. “The prevalence is off the charts” in Australia, said Dr. Robert Gallo, co-founder and director of the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, whose laboratory was the first to detect HTLV-1 in 1979 and publish the finding in 1980. Yet “nobody that I know of in the world has done anything about trying to treat this disease before,” said Gallo, who is also co-founder and scientific director of the Global Virus Network and chairs the network’s HTLV-1 Task Force. “There’s little to almost no vaccine efforts, outside of some Japanese research,” he said. “So prevention by vaccine is wide open for research.” comment: rate of infection 40%Medclinician |

June 27, 2018 A human virus that causes a rare form of leukemia increases the risk of disease by changing the way DNA loops inside our cells. The research, published in the journal eLife, shows that the human leukemia virus (HTLV-1) acts at a large number of sites across the human genome, disrupting the regulation of tens of thousands of genes. According to the team, from Imperial College London and The European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), the findings show that the HTLV-1 changes the folding pattern of human DNA in infected cells. They explain that the resulting disruption of gene function increases the risk of leukemia. HTLV-1 is thought to infect more than 10 million people around the world. The virus can be transmitted through unprotected sex, blood transfusions, and from mother to baby via breast milk. People can carry the virus for decades without symptoms, and 90 per cent of people may be unaware they are carrying it at all. However, an estimated 5-10 per cent of those infected may go on to develop an aggressive form of leukemia or a progressive paralytic disease. Medclinician |

That is not quite true, Med. I've been reporting on this since April http://www.avianflutalk.com/hivs-older-cousin_topic37243_post270410.html?KW=htlv%2D1#270410 and both the Austraian government and the WHO are taking an interest. As I reported in May, Greg Hunt (Australia's Health minister) has set up a 'rapid action' health force. So,
although it is quite widespread, it is not the disaster HIV is (as it
does not cause a collapse of the whole immune system - although it does
increase the risk of developing leukemia , encephalitis and lung disease
by 5-10%) and an appropriate response has been instigated. |

If it would stay among aboriginal peoples I would agree. But containing such a virus amounts to self-protection. All politicians look after no.1 if nothing else.
