Southern US in the crosshairs of a dangerous severe weather, tornado outbreak
Alex Sosnowsky Byline Image By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist April 13, 2019, 5:23:10 PM EDT Additional lives and property will be threatened as the outbreak of severe weather shifts to Louisiana and Mississippi through Saturday night. A large and devastating tornado has already struck the town of Franklin, Texas, which is located north of College Station, during the late morning hours of Saturday. The area at greatest risk for tornadoes, some of which can be strong and on the ground for more than a few minutes, will shift to Louisiana, western Mississippi and far southeastern Arkansas into Saturday evening. "This severe weather outbreak is especially concerning as many of the tornadoes may be difficult to see, being either shrouded by rain or occurring under the cover of darkness at night," according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Rossio. That is why it is very important for residents to turn on cell phone notifications or weather radios to receive vital severe weather warnings. Even though the actual risk of severe thunderstorms and a tornado may take up only an hour or two of the weekend, people are encouraged to closely monitor the weather situation and have a plan of action in place should the unthinkable happen at their location. After the severe weather outbreak targets the lower Mississippi Valley into Saturday evening, the likelihood of severe thunderstorms, including the potential for tornadoes, will continue at night and shift to the east and northeast. wedge accuready A massive tornado moves into Rochelle, Illinois, on Thursday, April 9, 2015. (Photo/Tom Purdy) The storms will tend to progress eastward across Mississippi and Alabama, while nosing northward into western Tennessee and Kentucky. Locally severe storms are projected to advance to western Alabama and middle Tennessee late Saturday night. While the risk of tornadoes will be significantly lower late at night, there is still the potential for couple of brief spin-ups. Severe Sat night April 13 On Sunday, severe thunderstorms will continue to progress eastward across the South and erupt farther to the north. When compared to Saturday, the overall threat of tornadoes in the South will be significantly lower on Sunday. However, a few storms may still produce tornadoes in Alabama, Georgia, the Florida Panhandle and the western Carolinas. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out northward to western Pennsylvania. Sun south April 13 While there can be a thunderstorm at any time Sunday afternoon at the Masters Golf Tournament at Augusta, Georgia, the greatest risk for a severe thunderstorm is late in the afternoon and evening. On Sunday, throughout the risk area from Ohio and western Pennsylvania to Alabama and Florida, the storms will take on more of a squall-line setup with the greatest threats being from damaging wind gusts, flash flooding and lightning strikes. Sun north April 13 Downpours and locally damaging winds will remain a concern through the overnight hours of Sunday as the thunderstorms cross the Appalachians and track across the mid-Atlantic, southern New York and into southwestern New England. A line of potentially damaging thunderstorms may also sweep through the eastern Carolinas at this time. The thunderstorms can create slow travel with poor visibility along the I-95 corridor from Washington, D.C., to Philadelphia, New York City and Providence, Rhode Island, during the early morning hours of Monday. "Across the northern mid-Atlantic and into southern New England, this could be a case where strong winds are produced with a minimal amount of thunder and lightning," according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski. The downpours and gusty thunderstorms may continue to track eastward and rattle Boston around the start of the Boston Marathon on Monday morning.
