Kaduna State Government yesterday said it has pencilled down 76 poultry
farms for closure, for contravening its plans to rid the state of the
H5N1 Avian Flu.
Government did not however reveal the names of the
indicted poultry farms or their locations, but said the farms would
undergo extermination and other bio-security measures, as a result of
the management lapses detected in their poultry keeping procedure.
Public
Relations Officer of the state Bird Flu Response Committee, Mr Samaila
Zatto, said in a statement in Kaduna, that the sanction was part of the
committee plans to make the state free of the disease.
He said
reports from its surveillance team indicated flagrant violation of the
stipulated methods for the proper disposal of faeces, feathers and
other waste extracted from processed chicken at the farms.
This he said, "poses a threat to the eradication mechanism put in place in the state."
The
committee also said it has culled about 45,000 chickens discovered to
be infected by the flu virus, and had properly disposed them, adding
that machinery had been set in motion for the payment of compensation
to victims before the end of the month.
According to him, "a total
of 236 poultry farms have been taken account of and their birds
certified free from the disease," it said, adding that in the zoning
arrangement it made for the fumigation of chicken markets in the state,
67 of such markets have been identified and registered in Kafanchan
zone, 108 in Chikun, 10 in Saminaka and 57 in Zaria zones. He urged
poultry farmers to avail themselves of the current registration
exercise, and warned that refusal by anyone would attract penalties.
