I have noticed recently a lot of people buying bleach. I am just curious as to what it could be used for. Does it steralize water? I searched some the archives and didn't see anything yet. Thanks for any help, and I am sorry if this has been already covered.

18 drops per gallon will kill the Bug. I think I read it needs to sit for a couple of hours for the smell to disipate. You can use the Search Tool on Bleach or Water for a ton of info.

Drinking water storage 5-8 drops per gallon. But if you get your water from a water company you should not need it. Water companies usually treat the water.

Argyll: Try to remain focussed on which water you want to treat, when you want to treat it and which bug you want to kill.
The bugs that might end up in the water supply will not be the pandemic human flu virus. The bugs that might end up in the water supply could be avian flu virus but this remains extremely difficult to catch. Water may need to be treated during a human pandemic but only to the standards that currently apply for the more common waterborne bugs. |

Hi argyll,
What people are referring to is the amount of chlorine or sodium hypochlorite in the bleach that you buy to treat the water, though I can only find and have bought 6% sodium hypochlorite (like Clorox regular bleach), I have looked for the 5.25% Mountainwinds mentioned. The water thread on Priority Preparations has a lot of info on it if you scroll down to different posts in the thread. Like Scotty said, different needs to treat water in different circumstances and sources. |

Because bleach is Sodium Hypochlorite mixed with water, it's a highly reactive substance which deteriorates over time. It's basically half strength after a year and worthless after 2 years.
Calcium Hypochlorite (dry swimming pool shock) is a powdered version that can be stored virtually indefinitely without losing its potency AS LONG AS IT IS KEPT DRY. It can be used to purify water. Directions for mixing it can be found in the "Priority Preps" section of this board under "WATER".

Don't forget that a bleach water solution can be used as a disinfectant for surfaces and even people that have to go out. (For the skin not the insides!)

I got the calcium hypochlorite, but it says 68% and 32% other. It does not say algeacide anywhere on the package but can I be sure that the "other" isn't? Thanks in advance, Jo
