Variants of an avian flu virus can cause severe illness and death, which is why an avian flu pandemic poses such a significant public health risk. The pandemic alert phase is currently at level 4 due to the recent emergence of a new bird flu variant in China that is infecting humans known as H7N9. The infectious H7N9 has displayed efficient transmission from birds to humans causing severe illness along with confirmed cases of limited human-to-human transmission. The H7N9 bird flu virus is virulent in humans. The pandemic alert level will be raised or lowered based on the current threat level of having the next pandemic.
In addition, a new SARS-like coronavirus known as MERS has also recently emerged in the Middle East leading to a second pandemic threat. The new coronavirus has infected over 40 people resulting in 20 deaths and is spread via limited human-to-human transmission. The new coronavirus is extremely virulent in humans. France recently reported its first two human cases of the new SARS-like virus as it continues to spread.
