I started a H5N1 Treatment Brainstorming page on the FluWiki which lists the symptoms I have read The symptoms listed were found in NEJM Sept 2005, Influenza Report, and an article in Chest. See H5N1 case reports page here.
My apologies if some symptoms listed below are redundant. I have no medical education. There is just too much speculation and it seems we need to stay focused on the facts. Hopefully this can serve as a knowledgebase helping experts focus. Then we need to educate medical professionals from all disciplines, home health aides, and parents about what to really expect. Please feel free to collaborate on making this page useful for diagnosis and treatment. Symptoms include (please add anything that is missing) Aminotransferase levels increased Bleeding from the nose and gums Cough Diarrhea (watery) without blood or inflammatory changes (in 40-70% of the cases according to anon_22 retired MD on the FluWiki) Diffuse alveolar damage (DAD) Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) Dyspnea Encephalitis Encephalopathy Fever Gastroenteritis Hemophagocytic syndrome Hyperglycemia complications from corticosteroid treatment Infiltrates, interstitial Leukocyte count decreased Lymphocyte count decreased Lymphoid tissue necrosis and atrophy Lymphopenia Malaise Myalgia Platelet count decreased Pleuritic pain Pneumonia, viral Proinflammatory cytokine cascade Pulmonary infiltrates Rhinitis (although upper respiratory symptoms may be absent) Segmental or lobular consolidation with air bronchograms Sputum production is variable and sometimes bloody Systemic inflammatory response syndrome Tachypnea Thrombocytopenia Viremia Vomiting I thought it would be useful if we break each symptom down by Clinical Presentation Description How To Measure How To Treat |

If the Pandemic Flu hits in my country, and then my State, I will ASSUME that any member of my family that gets sick has caught it and act accordingly.
The classic fever/gastro/pains will all be obvious I am sure.
My Dr says all an untrained person such as me can do is lower fever (Paracetamol) , treat dehydration with Oral Rehydration Solution, and treat the gastro, and pray.
He said Tamiflu is very hard to get, super expensive, and probably useless.
