Inexpensive water filter & purification techniques, keep in mind you need to do both to be safe.

AquaPak $20-

The AquaPak solar pasteurizes 4 to 5 liters of water at a time, up to 15 liters per day. Simply fill with water and lay it on a flat surface in the sun. A built-in WAPI indicates when water is pasteurized, in as little as 2 hours. Weighs 6 ounces when empty.

An alternative to bleach and iodine which are not good for long term use. Probably best to have a variety of approaches.
