It's finally happened. I've been cut off. Spouse finally said "enough." We have "enough." Spouse doesn't know I'm still waiting on order from beprepared.com and from survival acres. Unfortunately, it's a large order and I'm hoping to intercept the UPS guy. So, this is a thread about how to continue to prep (or start to prep) w/o spouse finding out. So far, I'm planning to pick up a little here and a little there and immerse it in my usual grocery shopping (although thanks to me we don't really have to go to the grocery store for a really long time). Am also planning on a shopping trip or two or three when spouse is working and I have my 3 year old DS with me. Thankfully, I don't have any more orders coming after the two above-mentioned ones. Any other ideas? |

I don't know if you live in a suburban or rural area , but if you have
neighbors close by , you could consider having your UPS packages
delivered to their house and then just go pick up your supplies later
when it's convenient for you. You could also have UPS boxes
delivered to your friend's houses that live in your area---- that way
you can tell your husband you're just going to visit a friend and
then you can just pick up your boxes while you're there.
Buying extra food on each shopping trip is a good idea but you can't get much, or I am sure your spouse will get very suspicious very quickly. My final idea is to give friends who you trust some money and a grocery/supply list and ask them to do your shopping for you. If your friends are at all concerned about bird flu, you might be able to convince them to do this for you if you tell them you'll give them a little extra money to buy a few extra preparations for themselves. These ideas, all of course, require you to either have your own bank account/money/credit card so that your husband won't ask you where you're spending all this money at. |

Libby, my husband thinks I should be commited and flips out everyday about my and my "chicken flu obsession". He told me I'm "really sick" and he is "worried about me". Blah! I'm Italian and buy too much food anyway lol. What I do now is hide some of the stuff. I just really started preping about 3 weeks ago and am on a very tight budget. We live pay check to pay check, have no savings what so ever, and had to claim bankruptcy in October. Needless to say when he saw me come in with 2 10# bags of flour and 40# of rice he wigged out to put it mildly. He has no idea that I have ordered masks. I am afraid to order anything else out of the ordinary. I went shopping last night with my 13 yr old son (who is secretly on board w/ me) and we hid all the prep stuff in my trunk until we can find somewhere to put if. I have tried to talk to my husband but to no avail. Well, I just won't buy him any cigarettes and then we will see how he feels :) . I have started to buy stuff like first aid bandages, vit. C tabs, Robitussin DN, theraflu ect and just tell him it was on sale. I can't afford Tamiflu, a flu shot or a pnumonia shot but at least my kids have gotten flu shots. Dr. won't give them the others. I want to get other stuff but don't know what to do. I need to get some kind of grill since I have no way to cook anything if we loose power. All I can think of doing is making these vagabond stoves that we made in girl scouts out of a #10 can and you take an empty tuna can and coil cardboard tightly in it and pour parrifin over it. When it hardens, you light it, flip the #10 can up side down, cut a door in it and slip the tuna can in it. We use to make pancakes, hot dogs and fish on it. I have a fire place, but no fire wood. Where do you hide your stuff? |

Well, fortunately, I don't have to hide what we already have. However, I'm going to have to start thinking of hiding places. Some of it I can integrate into what we already have. Other possible hiding places: shoe boxes in a closet, under your son's bed, in your dresser drawers, (does he look under the bed?), back of closet... what other places doesn't he look? Kitchen places perhaps? Behind the washer? You just have to make sure you don't have a plumbing problem or when he goes to fix it all the supplies will fall down on him! You definitely need to hide the masks! Clip coupons, watch sales, check out thrift stores and yard sales, try to integrate stuff as much as possible into what you have in the house. Try to hide more food in places he isn't going to look. Just some ideas to start with. I'm going to be wracking my brain myself now that I've been cut off! -- Libby |

I can't believe you guys have to hide preps from your spouses! I sat down and told my husband all about bird flu, told him he could go to the cdc, who, and pandemicflu.gov websites and check it out. we giggle/joke about all the stuff I'm buying, but that's how we are. Print off the pages from these websites and show them. explain how the world economics will colapse. go to oprah's website and print off any info that she has listed from her show. showing them proof will help them get a better understanding of pandemics, and h2h transmission. on oprah the infectious disease specialist said this flu is a cousin of the spanish flu of 1918. they have most of the same genes.

To all who wish/need to prep "discreetly"........ If at all feasible: Rent yourself a local self-storage unit. Get one that is accessible even if there is a power outage, if you can. I don't have spouse problem - just wanted to "spread my resources around" not keep everything at home - in case of vandalism or unprepared neighbor hood issues. Actually I have two....one I can walk to......small inside units go for about $35/month. but are electronically controlled - In this case, if BF arrives, immediately empty the contents and bring them home. At that point, partner won't be mad.....just grateful you had forsight. Obviously not workable idea if finances are enjoined with problem partner who is sure to notice the money gone....but not every spouse examines purchases on one's own credit card. Good luck! Bootsie

Hey I commend you guys who are doing everything possible on a tight budget and non-supportive spouse. I would suggest that you just all you can when you can. The trunk is a great place. I am filling up the suitcases in my closet. I also have hidden things in the cabinets inside pots and pans. Keep going because you will be grateful if you ever have to use it.

I tried to do the prepping discreetly...and then I got mad! When my hubby found out he threw a fit and was saying that I was crazy etc etc. I turned around and told him that since he was so convinced that this was not going to happen, fine! That was his right...BUT! that did not give him the right to make a life or death decision for myself and my family! PERIOD! I told him either he was on board and we were working together in this, or he was not and when it all came down, he was to hand all the house keys over to me, pack his clothes and get out! Because I planned on living and I was tired of his spoiled defeatist attitude! I was not going to lie, sneak, cheat, or beg him or anyone for the necessities I needed nor my family needed to live! This was one of the few times I have ever stood up to him on anything and it really took him by surprise! After that I printed off all the govt. info and let him know that until he read every single word of it< I would not discuss anything with him. And I would never allow anyone to endanger my family's life including him! So Get over it! Deal with it! And either work with me or get out of my way! Needless to say he is working with me on it. LOL.
It is so much hard to stock up on stuff if you spouse isn't supportive. I try telling people that most of the food can be used , so even if there isn't a pandemic, that's not a waste. My suggestion is also to go to yard sales. YOu can sometimes find camping equipment and all kinds of stuff like that. Check out your newspapers too and see what things people are selling. If you are looking for something in particular that is difficult to find, you mind even consider putting an ad in then newspaper---in my newspaper, they list all the "Looking For" ads and people are constantly listing things like bikes, appliances, etc... (of course if you do this, put YOUR cell phone number down so people won't call your house and let your hubby in on what your up to) Everyone in my family thought I was crazy too, so you are not alone !! Just try to remember that you're doing this for the right reasons and it's NEVER a bad idea to be prepared because you never know when something might happen. |

Suggest you read it carefully. Maybe this will convince the fence sitters? On your shipment, if you do change destination address (even across the street), let me know asap, before it ships. UPS will beat you to death (figuratively speaking) with charges ($5 for each package rerouted). |

I am also looking a hiding spots also from looters. I like the guy who got a extra water heater as a safe. Mybe we can share hiding spots ideas I am seriously burying a safe. Inside my shed fake floor and money and jewelry. fake heating vents for food. My heart goes to you , the end you will need to convice him to get in line with you and still you will probally hide some things. Asfor firewood does it need to be put side and dried out because I have some trees I would just cut down. Edited by RBARNES55 |

I'm so sorry that some of your mates aren't on board. Mine is sort of, he's letting me buy things that we will use either way. Besides a few years back people always had extra stuff put away in case of an emergency. Keep on doing what you can and if nothing happens it'll help your food budget in the future, or if it does happen Just saw two Canada Geese fly over, wonder how long it will take before they're getting shot out of the air? We have a Parrot who's cage is in the front window, I guess we shall have to hide her. Though I will put her down if she gets sick, but she will no longer ever be able to go outside into her flight cage. She used to spend all day out there in the Summer and loved it, talking to all the little birds, and giving them hell for drinking her water. |

Well, I showed spouse the stuff from Dr. Niman. Suffice it to say, we spent the afternoon shopping. Still may have to hide some stuff out of sight though. I like the suitcase idea..... Maybe I can hide some things in my office.... The other idea I just came out with is this: we have a ton of books in our house (literally). I'm going to pull the books out to the edge of the shelf and stash some things behind the books.... I think spouse waxes and wanes with all the stocking up. If I get things and put them away while spouse is otherwise occupied, spouse doesn't get as anxious. -- Libby

He does not shop with me but he is okay with my spendings, even the masks. He thought that was out there, but is still okay. To all who have to hide take a lesson and stand up like MeeWee did. I'd like to thank all of you for sharing your thoughts. It's helped a lot. Although my wife is a nurse and her work has been published (Intravenous Therapy), she has difficulty wrapping her head around the situation, as do I - despite the fact that than I'm a frequent poster. My wife has recently started to humour me, but requested I not talk too much about the potential for a mini-apocalypse and how to ride it out. I can't falt her, the poor women's having hot flashes and I spend half my night turning a fan on for her. Life still goes on. Unfortunatley my wife did blow a gasket yesterday when she noticed I purchased additional N-95's masks, after my seat-of-the pants risk assesment of the latest developments, indicated I'd sleep better at night with some more. All I could say was, it's just insurance honey, forget about it and lets move on, I'm only thinking about us. xoxo (She's a Type A) Thank God she didn't see the portable generator! There are some thoughts below that might clarify things for anyone that has not read them already. I think they can be applied to everyone. I hope it helps. My husband found my stash in my trunk and I thought he was going to flip! To my suprize he didn't! Guess all the info from here I've been reading to him must have paid off. He said he understands my anxiety but doesn't want me to worry and be consumed by this. I told him I'm not consumed, I just want to be prepared and if something should happen, I want us to be ready and to get thru this. Needless to say, he carries in all my supplies and helped me organize them YEAH! |

At first my husband thought I was just looking for an excuse to go
shopping! What a putz!!
 I told him regardless of what he thinks, Im
buying preps! I asked him to think about how crappy he would feel if he
wouldnt allow me to buy preps, and this thing hits! I told him "Think
about how you would feel if there was NO food in the house, NO food in
the grocery store due to everyone panic buying, and I had a chance to
stock up." He has been better though. Not because he thinks a pandemic is going to hit, but because he FINALLY realized that when Mama's happy, everyone's happy! He even bought me a box of N95's after an argument one day! The day of buying flowers after an arguement are OVER!!! LOL....Hmmm, I wonder if Im going to get masks and gloves for Valentines Day? I have just finished reading this..I guess all I can say is thank goodness I,m a single mom....but I have someone that is on board with what I do..but has stated don,t you think you have enough..well I have 5 to feed so need as much as I can get....and all that I bought today was on sale..so no arguements what so ever...
