Hi folks,

Ive been playing about with some web stuff for a while (since the first outbreaks of avian), and thrown some ideas out there.

The forum idea is great, but im glad someone else has done it so i don't need too!

Since things in the UK seem to be heating up a little, ive launched uktextalerts.co.uk

The site initally was for me to keep friends & family up to date, but im throwing it open for everyone.

Im launching a new msn type messenger for anyone interested in the next 48hours, it will automatically send updates of important developments and also allow like minded individuals the ability to talk realtime.

text message alerts, email alerts, and updates are all posted on the website also.

Ive also included google kml network links for google maps, and google earth to show any outbreaks and exclusion zones in the uk.

There is also a download area, i intend to use for any usefull survival info, all of which will be avalible as PDF's and as one large grab and run zip file.

I figured that if this really does get bad, then the internet will grind to a halt eventually, so it would be handy to have one resource that people can grab a file from.

Theres not much content on there at the moment, but as things progress i will he heavily updating it, and at the moment its hosted on .mac as i get my own network of servers ready.

Hope this is of use to some of you,

ideas, comments, help? would be greatly appreciated.

Ewan

Great idea, but I won't pay £1.50 per text - I've never far away from an internet connection at home, work or play.

I do like the neon light up links though!

LOL I liked them too.

Im also never away from an internet connection, so the text messaging is just for people that are. The 1.50 is the cheapest i could set this up for as quickly as possible. Hopefully i wont be having to send out many messages, but we will see how that pans out.

Ill get the email alerts, and the messenger system running asap. (both will be free)

Wow, I don't understand the 1.5 pounds per message.

Anybody can send anybody a text message from a computer for free.

not quite true, in the US that is the case, but not in the UK.

I needed a service that was directly connected to all of the cellular networks, and goes out to all phones the second i send the message.

Also i needed a service that covers the data protection act for users, and allows them to subscribe & unsubscribe via short-code.

The system its self costs me over £140 per month to keep the birdflu shortcode going, even if no-one uses it, and it has been running for over a year.

As with all shortcodes, the only people that really gain from it are the phone companies.

Ok, that makes sense. Didn't release you contracted an automated service. Sounds like a great idea.
