Does anyone know--Can I cook rice and then freeze it in zip-lock freezer bags for later use?  Thanks.

yes. but watch the power situation. dried  can stored for a long time but then of course you have to have water and heat to cook.

precooked and freezing all your rice and noodles would make one vulernable if power goes out.

do some not all.

I was just discussing the concerns of cooking during a blackout with a local fellow flubie.

I either have to get a lot more propane for my outdoor grill or waste wood getting my stove up to temp (higher temps are needed to cook, over just heating my home).

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't you cook most food (rice, beans, spaghetti, etc.) ahead of time, break it down to individual meals and then vacuum seal into bags?

I was thinking about getting a Foodsaver VAC 1205 or 2840.

This would save cooking and freezing energy.  Warming a meal up takes a lot less energy than cooking from scratch.

Just some food for thought.Smile

Don't you still have to keep it chilled/frozen to keep it from decomposing?
I don't think putting it in a vacuum-bag will keep it 'fresh', but I'm not sure...

I do know that a pressure canner does the trick!

The vacuum sealer would work as long as you were talking about freezing foods.  Love mine, and am on my second one.  But your question could be interpreted two ways.

Pre-cooked food would have to be refrigerated or frozen, frozen lasts very long time.  Dry food products could be placed in the cupboard.
