This is a link that Marjo originally posted. http://www.survivetheflu.com/mytown1.html It's a riveting and frightening read. As she advised, don't read it before going to bed. Of course, I did and then couldn't sleep. I've been thinking a lot about it in the last few days and thought it might be helpful to de-brief it with others. Maybe we could think through some of the (fictional, so far) scenarios she writes about and share insights and ideas. -- Libby |

LibbyAlex,
I read this two months ago. She's one smart gal. As a nurse I would have to say, she's right on the money. There are many gems to gain, thinking as I never thought before. I encourage everyone to read it in it's entirety. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. :) Mary Kay RN |

Okay, I'll start. In the story it is said that by imposing quarantine the wave is only dragged out longer, while eventually the same number of people will be infected and die. More people will die even, because more people will starve... How do you think about that? Should we quarantine (ourselfs) or not? Will the virus run it's course and infect a certain percentage of the population no matter what we do? Marjo |

Quarantine only makes sense if there is a hope of immunization to bring safety, otherwise I think it's just prolonging the agony!

Yes, but if it keeps you or your children from getting the flu, isn't it worth it to keep them (and you) from getting it? -- Libby (who can't imagine letting her 3 year old out amid a pandemic flu...)

Libby, It appears to be a race between social breakdown and vaccine development/distribution. You can't maintain a perfect quarantine forever, one slip is all it takes, the longer you try to the lower your chances success. Nothing but a host of bad choices! Once the jump to H2H is made it's either catch it or get vaccinated against it because it isn't going to go away. I would never say not to try, but you need to be realistic about how long you might have to keep the children quarantined and the sacrifices you may have to make to keep them safe. Will you or your husband be willing to venture out for supplies knowing that once done you can't return for X amount of time, this needs to be thought out and planned for. I can clean supplies, but I can't clean me, should my grandkids be in need, I plan to go out, deliver the supplies and retire to another location for isolation until I'm sure I'm clear of infection. Our worst case is 5 trips out with 5 infections, then there would only be one adult left to care for the children, who when supplies ran out would be left with some very hard choices! |
