Food for thought.  What is your hospital capacity.  I was just running some numbers through my head.

Assuming a population of 3 Million people in San Diego County.
Assuming that 20 percent of them get ill with this coming flu pandemic.
Assuming that 10 percent of those who get ill are sick enough for hospitalization.

That would be 600,000 sick with H5N1.
That would be 60,000 wanting to go to the hospitals.

I believe that we have about 6000 bed overflow capacity in San Diego County.  If we put ten people in a bed, we are just fine.

How about where you guys live?

To help put this issue in perspective, read any posts regarding just-in-time
supply management in hosptials. Most hospitals have very little inventory
on hand. 80%+ or North American medical supplies come from overseas.

Connect the dots no math required.

I am in a small town population 10,500 and our hospital i s small..and we would probably have to fit a 100 to a bed...if we require anything we are transported 2 hours from here to a larger hospital..I have to travel the 2 hours next week to go be tested for allergies(something to check off the list before bird flu hits)....

Here in AZ, not good.  A hospital had to close its doors a couple of months ago when flu was spreading like wildfire.  They could only treat emergencies and were turning away people trying to walk in.

On an interesting side note; my sister had her grandbaby at the hospital yesterday.  She said ALL hospital employees were wearing masks.  Not typical here...I wonder if it is bird flu precautions, or just precautions in general.  My 4 month old great-neice was diagnosed with begining stages of Pneumonia.  She is due for her shot now, not sure what the doctors will decide to do???

I think the scenarios of hospitals written in the 'could happen' postings are right on.  Just not enough time or staff to prepare for this.

Nikita, I also live in AZ and I agree that our hospitals are out of control! My son had to go to Phoenix Childrens a week ago for an asthma attack and it was PACKED!!! Banner Desert in Mesa...FORGET IT!!! They dont even have enough CHAIRS for the people waiting to be seen...so there is NO WAY they would have enough beds during an emergency!

Im sure the masks were just a precaution over the regular flu. I think that we are getting a "second wave" of season flu right now.

Better to be safe than sorry....

Hospitals cannot handle the regular flu season. When their beds are full they devert patients to other hospitals. We should get the medic on this thread to help explain a little better.

The bottom line is that our hospitals will not be able to handle the case loads of patients. They can't now! Have you ever had to wait in an ER waiting room? Geez!

I live in AZ as well. About a month ago many people in my office had to go to emergency and wait 8 hours. There was some respratory stuff going around. Our air quality is horrible due to no rain for over 100 days. Can't imagine what pandemic would bring.

I'm in Canada, town of about 85,000 I think.  hospital used to have 600 beds, but due to cutbacks, I think 300 in a jam is the most, medical system here is in crisis, lack of funds, polticians verbally yack about it, nothing comes from them though. New Party in power now, will get even less help.

I agree stardust!  There is some nasty stuff floating around the Phoenix area this winter! Our ER's are in serious trouble as it is!  Hate to think about what would happen if you threw a pandemic in the mix! No way they will be able to deal with the surge of patients!

And regarding the air quality...Im SO sick of these high pollution advisory days! Someone please send us some freakin rain PLEASE!

Better to be safe than sorry....

We  are in a rural area however we do have around 100 to 130 beds

we  could go to 200 if push came to shove. my concern is for rural hospitals with 20 - 50 beds .

NZ Area Health Boards do not intend admitting BF cases. The paitents will be cared for in tempory community health centres by volunteers. In other words if you're sick you go to a barracks set up in a local school. The hospital system will be overwhelmed. I guess this will give the authorities some control/maanagement over the large number of corpses.

We are a rural county and have about 50 beds 4 are ICU with vents available - no nurses to staff the Icu but what the heck small detail. I think they have only 1 reverse flow room. They have had to put out the no room at the inn sign more times than I can count

I called all 3 hospitals here in northern NV and was told the same thing that they will not give out that info! I worked in all 3 hospitals and they are currently expanding since I have retired from the medical field and can only approx a total of about 3500 beds available from a conservative estimate. If this hits here and the area is full of retirees and new families coming in everyday from all over the US...(This area is exploding in population!) ; we are definetely up a creek without a paddle!  We have no where near enough medical staff or hospitals or Urgent Care facilities and this area's economy is based upon tourism and gambling! We have a lot of questions from the people here asking what is our state going to do and a very definite amount of silence from our state and local authorities because our whole state is based upon tourism!...In short order we are screwed!

Meewee

After all this is the desert and hey, what else is there to see and do?

God Bless us all!
