Bird flu traces detected in Krasnoyarsk territory - Rosselkhoznadzor

NOVOSIBIRSK. July 4 (Interfax) - Antibodies of type A bird flu and
some genetic material of the bird flu virus were found in samples of
wild itinerant birds in Krasnoyarsk territory, the Novosibirsk
department of Rosselkhoznadzor (the Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary
Oversight Service) said.

"The number of regions in the North Federal District where the
potential carriers of the disease have been detected has increased to
five," the organization said.

Earlier, traces of the bird flu virus were found in samples of
migrant birds in the Altay territory, Ust-Ordynsky Buryat Autonomous
District, the Republic of Buryatia and in Tomsk region.

In Krasnoyarsk territory, antibodies and genetic material of the
A-H5 virus strain were found in laboratory checks of three samples
collected from migrant birds. "A total of 3,500 samples were collected
within the bird flu monitoring," it said.

A number of measures have been taken on the territory of the
district in order to prevent the spread of bird flu. Over 4.4 million
poultry have been vaccinated, and 2.2 million have been re-vaccinated in
the North Federal District, it said.

"No bird flu cases in poultry and wild birds have been registered
as of July 3, 2007," the service said..

It seems like these birds are healthy and not showing symptoms. The article does not say they were found sick and / or dead.
