In order to make SIP less of a shock to our systems, we are trying to incorporate some of our plans now -
1. We are only using clothesline for drying clothes
2. We are using less meat/more beans in our diet
3. We started a garden
4. We're using roof rainwater to water our garden
5. We're being more prudent about handwashing and alcohol gel. In addition to washing prior to meals and after using the bathroom, we wash their hands/use purell every time they pet the dogs/cat and after being outside.
6. We're being more prudent about wearing shoes and socks AND leaving outside the door.
We plan to incorporate more and more SIP skills into our daily lives
This summer, I want to do a test SIP for 2 weeks with the exception that DH is going to work. I want to see what issues come up that we hadn't thought of.
I'm interested to hear what others are doing in terms of practicing.

My family is only supportive to a point and they would not incorporate most of the stuff you are doing. We already dump our shoes in the mud room but eat beans no way.
A test would be out of the question. You are lucky your whole family is into preparing, it is great. |

Well... there is a bit of grumbling/complaining. The trial run was my son's idea - he loves anything camping/survial/roughing it. DH is going along with some of it not because of the bird flu but because of the food costs and potential for food shortages. It will be a walk in the park compared to the real deal, but at least we can test out our preps. |

No chance here. My husband humors me, but that's as far as it goes. In fact today, he happened to be home when UPS showed up with two cases from Honeyville, and I got a very annoyed roll of the eyes/head shake. I am so sick of defending what I am doing. I wish this BF would decide what its doing and either go away (preferably) or go H2H2H and get it over with. I know that's horrible, I'm just frustrated.

For those of you that are relatively new, I don't expect you to understand my comment, but I have been prepping and trying to get others to prep, and trying to get my husband to understand for over 2 YEARS with very little help from the media. I'm tired of my husband, my family and my friends all thinking I'm completely insane.

same here, my husband and teens humor me, watches me prep, builds shelves when I need them, but they roll their eyes if I talk about it happening somewhere, like India, Egypt, etc...BUT my dh is very happy when there is 3 feet of snow and we are running out of something in the pantry and I send him to "my pantry" to get more!!! So I prep on happily, even with all the eye rolling and the "gawd, mom, not more, do I have to carry this too"...

It makes me wonder how many women are preppers compared to men? I mean, DH might be interested (vaguely) and follow the news on this from time to time. But if it were up to him, we wouldn't be prepping at all! He is ok with my doing it, but we had to make a deal - once we are reasonably prepped, have a plan and have tested the plan, that we quit talking about it other than me checking the news on it.

homeschoolmama (I homeschool too by the way )
I had to laugh about them appreciating having some preps around! Just last week DH was laughing at me for buying Cavit (a temporary dental filling) - but then Sunday he bit down on an almond and the whole top of his molar broke off at the gum line! There was an old filling there that came out with the tooth - well you can guess the rest! It's almost a week until he can get the tooth fixed and he's loving that Cavit about now!

Gee are we married to the same man! Mine does the same thing! I have my purse out to buy something from the net and he says, "What are you buying NOW!" I just don't say much. Susan T sounds like you are buying stuff you can use like I buy. If we did not buy long term stuff from Honeyville we would be dumping money in the garbage can next year. We are spending less with the long term storage stuff. I just ignore him because when the stuff hits the fan he will be glad I did all this to keep us alive. I agree with you though I just wish this thing would hit and get it over with. Had a co-worker say today, "I see there is a Rice shortage." She knows I am preppping and she is trying to. I told her yes that the preppers have been talking about it for a few weeks. She said, "The media only tells us what they want us to know." She just found out today. Stuff is going to go off the shelves as the regular people see what is coming. I am just going to buy 3 gallons of oil and 40 lbs of Wheat flour and keep up with the rest of my stuff on a regular basis. I use my preps on a daily basis except for my longterm dry stuff. Keep on prepping! |

It's not just the BF we have to worry about. Throughout history there has been one disaster after another wether it be war, famine, earthquake, flood. In the Bible there are several stories of God telling his people to prepare, Noah and Joseph for example.

Tadeo, I only mentioned BF because that is what I believe is the biggest threat at the moment. Yes the food shortage is terrible, but I don't think it is going to last long term, and I definately don't think it is going to completely collapse the world supply chain. I have changed my philosophy, and whatever happens in the future, I will always have a stash, but maybe not a year+.

Flumom, I think many husbands/wives feel the same way as ours, unfortunely. I think if you are not really following what is going on, it would all seem a bit "doomsday-ish" and unbelievable. I still remember my husbands initial reaction 2 years ago... "Yeah, right, and aliens are going to come down and take over the planet." He eventually came to believe in what I was doing to prepare, but after 2 years his patience has worn a bit thin.
I think I'm just about done prepping (with the last shipment from Honeyville, I'm stocked for about a year now) so now it is just a matter of rotating, and maybe I won't get the dirty looks as often! |

Tadeo, I agree with you there are other things we need to be watching too, but like SusanT, to me this one has most of my attention right now - everything else seems much more survivable.
For me, (and this is just my situation)I feel food, economy and other threats are survivable - with a lot of hard work and knowhow. I attribute this knowledge to having older family members who have done it. I can live without electricity. I can grow food. I can boil water. I can trade with my neighbor. I can pedal a bike, handwash clothes, sew, cook from scratch, live without electricity. My parents/grandparents did these things.
These are visible threats. BF is invisible, in a way. Anywhere could be hit without "warning" (we will see precursors leading up to the other threats and they will be on the major news networks). People would be walking around spreading the virus before showing symptoms. Stuf flike that. I say "warning" above because I feel govt warnings for bf will come too late. I'm not a conspiratorist or whatever, I just think that too much has been left in the hands of the local govts and it looks like very few of them know diddlysquat about it. For example, if the govt takes as long to respond for a pandemic as it did for Katrina in any city, tens of thousands will be dead or infected by the time they stepped it up.
Anyway, so, having said all that, that is why I am keeping up with bf news so carefully online - it is the threat that might just come in the back door and bite us on the butt while we are watching food/economy/wars/elections.

Fab4 this is why I have asked Albert if we can set up a place here to track food shortages, flu, gas, bird flu, etc..
If we all had a spot where we could track this from all the places we live in it may give us a head start over other people. Let's see what Albert says. |
