The majority of patients infected with H5N1 experience secondary bacterial
infections. Discuss the the following with your doctor.

Cipro and similar medications are usually avoided for children becuase of the potential for side effects.  Ask your doctor for a suitable alternative if you have kids.

I had pneumonia about 5 years ago and was prescribed several antibiotics which helped minimally and finally they prescribed Cipro since the others weren't working well and this stuff worked wonderfully and cleared it up fast. I had no side effects at all from it.

If you have children, make sure all their immunization and booster shots are current.

Has anyone been able to discuss with their physician what antibiotics they
should have on hand to treat post avian influenza infections? I am thinking
of bacterial (and some viral) pneumonia, menengitis, acute bronchitis. Any
drug intervention at all for Cytokine Storm.
1. would the physician write Rxs for any of these, with recommendations
and instructions?
2. would they be started immediately after after the first few days?
3. are the physicians any more forthcoming than they have been with
Tamiflu?
4. any hints from docs/nurses/etc. would be appreciated

There has been some very interesting research regarding the use of Statins (cholesterol meds like lipitor, Crestor, etc) and reduction of the Cytokine Storm.

A good synopis appears at Effect Measure

Basically, those already on statins showed a greatly redued mortality rate from pneumonia.  Whether taking statins after an infection occurs would have any effect is unknown.

In 2004 Almog et al. (Circulation
, Aug 17 2004;110(7):880-885) reported that patients admitted to the hospital with acute bacterial infections and who were on statins for more than a month for other reasons had a dramatically reduced incidence of severe sepsis (19% versus 2.2%) and reduced admission to the Intensive Care Unit (12.2% vs. 3.7%). An interesting point is that patients on statins might be expected to be at greater risk because they are taking a medication for a pre-existing medical condition.

Sounds like a good reason to get a cholesterol test and an Rx.

IT has been said that it is best to keep your immune system strong in order to fight the flu virus, hwoever that is all been changing lately largely due to the immune system response to the virus= cytokine and chemokyne over aggresively response in healthy and strong individuals, basically your immune system produces the response that end sup killing you.  I am working on how to protect myself and my family by looking at this from the point of view of knowing how the virus works, its structure and composition and the response from the immune system towards it.  In my opinion that will probavly be my best chance of avoiding it and if coming down with it, surviving it.

Fla Medic-

Loved the statin thing. Do you know of any links that would state how much to be given for persons not taking statins on a regular basis and children's doses? (not sure that's a good idea but it might keep a sick kid alive).

The hubby (God Bless his cholesterol laden heart) has Rx's for lipitor.

By the way he has Hypercholesterolemia so it's ain't my fried chicken doing it. lol. Not that I let him have it. Only on holidays. It's twigs and bark for him. Someone's got to pay for my stock.
