I just registered but have been reading on BF for a year.
My questions are... My next door neighbor (suburbs) has a bird feeder in her yard. What should I do? Will it be safe to walk my dogs or let them in and out if BF comes to the state? Finally when BF goes H2H will it still be infecting birds and animals or will it change to a human disease? |

Dottie, My opinion is to skip worrying about the feeder, birds are everywhere. When the bird flu comes your neighbor will probably take it down pronto. Allowing your animals out is always an invitation to infect them as there are always birds pooping everywhere, your animal can become infected and also bring it home on their feet. I guess if you live a distance from civilization and can watch where they walk, preventing them from coming into contact with bird poop, I guess you'd be ok. I believe it will still be infecting animals, even if it goes H2H. Anyone wanna add or refute? Just my opinion. Mary Kay |

The birds eat at my neighbors feeder but roost in my trees and shrubs. They have come to this feeder for years-will they stop roosting here??I am worried as far as long term...birds and droppings are everywhere in my yard and what about airborne dried droppings? There in a flock of doves about 50-70 on our roofs right now.
Shuold I find another place to wait out the flu waves? Has there been any B2H from wild birds? |

What's all this about the bird feeder already, this thread is supposed to be about when to quarentine. Maybe start a new thread for dealing with the neighbors. There is already a thread titled "dogs", try there.

Sorry if I sounded short tempered but it takes alot of time to go through all these posts and it's becoming very frustrating to go somewhere to sit in on a real discussion about a serious topic only to find yourself in Oz to talk about toto. It's after 1am here and maybe I'm just a tad cranky. Long day. Hopefully I'll win the 365 mil tomarrow, that definately wouldn't suck. :>} (Maybe it's 356 mil?............... Whatever) |

Personally I like the twists and turns of a thread. Makes you think in different ways and in different directions. Forward ahead, march - is a bit limiting. Focused yes, but like a country road is to an interstate - it may take longer to get there - but extremely more interesting. The ability to speed read, and high speed internet, should be mandatory for those who are horizontially challanged. Then again, pointless rambling is a waste of everyones time - OK, I'll shut-up.

Sorry if I bothered anyone.I am sitting in the suburbs of middle america watching flocks of birds eat and excrete allover my yard and the nature trail.I read a FEW other posts ...I am new here
If there are birds that are asymptomatic..... and there is a tone that people on this site are doubtful of "official" info... so BF could be here just as in other countries.... IF i want to quarantine myself..... WHAT about the birds all over my house????? So who do I ask? |

Dottie, concerning WHERE to quarantine your family: I would wait until the pandemic hits the US and then approach your neighbor with your concern for HER and your families safety to remove her bird feeders. If she refuses and the birds begin to flock around your property I would call authorities in emergency management and ask them to talk with her. Bird droppings strategically placed on her front porch may be effective as well. LOL! Just kidding! "Love thy neighbor......." Mary Kay RN |

Dottie, Yes AI could be here. And it probably already is in the LP form. But as has been said several times by Fla_Medic, we must find a way to live with this virus as much, if not more so, than protecting ourselves from it. We must find a balance, something that we are all here trying to do, perhaps your questions, observations and insights will further our mutual journey. As I like to say: Knowledge is power. Arm yourself. I am so glad that you found your way to us and I look forward to your future contributions. |

Being new to this list I am concerned about talking about the wrong thing. Am I wrong in thinking this thread is titled "When Birds Come to Visit" and therefore bird discussion IS appropriate? I too am concerned with migrating birds. I have an acre pond and after reading about the migrating swans brings this to Australia, I am darned concerned. We get swans, Canadian geese, cormorants, eagles, all sort of migrating birds from all over the world. It is scary. We love birds but last night my hubby said this adds new meaning to the "funny" tee shirt we saw at a sportsmans show that said "If it flies, it dies." Scary. Lin |

Lin, welcome, this is a topic for discussion of birds in our local communities. Icterids are moving now in NA and soon neotropical migrants will migrate north into Canada and US, it should be an interesting year for all, birds and humans. Hopefully, the IBWO will not be affected! |

IBWO
The Ivory-billed Woodpecker (Campephilus principalis) is a very large and extremely rare member of the woodpecker family, Picidae. It is officially listed as an endangered species, and until recently had widely been considered extinct. However, highly compelling sightings of at least one male bird in Arkansas in 2004 and 2005 were reported in April 2005 |
