Hey have yall ever heard of putting your canned stuff in the dishwasher instead of using a pot to boil them?

Hi Levygoddess,

I think what you're thinking of is people who use the dishwasher to clean/sterilize their jars before they fill them--but then they still have to boil the jars after they're filled to make sure they're safe and won't spoil. Dishwashers don't get hot enough long enough to be safe for actual canning--just for washing/heating up jars BEFORE canning.

happy canning--the season is starting, I just bought a bunch of jar lids for my old jars-- and am getting ready for strawberries, etc....

I wonder if you could use the dishwasher ..long time ago I heard you could bake a turkey in the dishwasher...mmmm  that would sure be easier..but getting the jars to stay upright might be a problem.....

I want to learn canning but I have one of those smooth top stoves....thats a problem...the pots weigh too much and will break the surface...and the pots dont fit right on a smooth top...the only other option is to try to use someone elses stove!!! Oh boy I can see someone letting me do that!!!

What about gas? I have a gas range. Why could you not go to a sporting store and get a propane bottle, fry stand and can away? I would think that would work? How about it AFT anyone out there canning this way? Can it be done? We need to help Levygoddess especially now with summer veggies available to can.

The Amish use wood burning stove out side....could you regulate a fry stand well enough..mmmm...do you have a garage where you might put in a electric stove...have to have wired for 220 outlet but a used stove wouldn't be to expensive.....or barter with a friend or relative use there stove and give them a few jars of goodies...if you use one of the newer canners that are light weight you should be able to use on your stove...call the manufactor to see what weight they will hold.....Good luck...

I have a smooth top stove and I have not had any problems canning either pressure or hot water methods.  I have done so for 4 years.  I bought mine at Sears.

You just need to be careful placing your pots on and off the stove

NO cast iron pots.

Most electric dryers are 220, you can unplug the dryer and use that outlet.

Levygoddess, been gone... but I have a smooth top and I use it to water bath my jellies.

The new pressure canners should be fine but call the maker of your stove and they will tell you so you do not worry.

I ONLY use the dishwasher to sterilize the jars, just set diswasher to wash and heat dry. Do this right before you are ready to can so that the jars are HOT.

I keep the lids in hot water in my crock pot so I do not boil the lids. Both of these techniques give you more room on your stove for the hot foods you will pack in the jars and the canner.

Hope this helps.
