I was just wondering how long does cat and dog food last unopened bags.  I am talking about the dry variety.
I am sorry if this was talked about and I missed that information.
Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

I used to buy the big bags and store four or five for the hurricane season. By the end of the fouth bag there were meal bugs in the bag which of course can then infest your food. So I now FREEZE the bags, smaller ones, for 72 hours. THat's been the recs for flour too that way the meal bug..eggs/larvae whatever  don't get to mature/\. Gross anyway you think about it.

Please do not post links to selling pet food, not in your post or signature line. Thanks!

I've decided to put up dry dog foods and cat foods like you would dehydrated foods.  I'm vacuum sealing dry pet foods into the largest canning jars that I can find, labeling and dating and seeing if they keep well this way long term.  I think that the jars will keep the food fresher longer especially after opening a large bag--I'm thinking that you could easily store for a year or longer but I will find out. The jars are reusable and it may seem a little labor intensive but I think it will pay off since insects and mice cant get into it. Each time I buy a large bag of food I fill several giant jars of cat and dog food for emergency storage. After I have several months worth then I can cycle through the jars checking for freshness and adding additional jars to reach my storage goal. I think this is a great idea for emergency needs as I value my animals highly and believe that they should be prepared as the rest of us are.
