Seven cases of strange new swine flu found in U.S.

Thu Apr 23, 2009 3:59pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Seven cases of a strange and unusual new kind of swine flu have been found in California and Texas, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Thursday.

All seven people have recovered but the virus itself is a never-before-seen mixture of viruses typical among pigs, birds and humans, the CDC said.

"We are likely to find more cases," the CDC's Dr. Anne Schuchat told a telephone briefing. "We don't think this is time for major concern around the country."

This is not looking good.  It's still a little early to call it the next pandemic.  All cases so far seem to be somewhat mild, but all of those patients apparently required medical treatment so I wonder how mild it actually is.   Even the regular flu claims lives.  There must be misc. flu deaths that they are possibly not linking with this.   Hopefully all hospitals are on alert for this new emerging virus.

Another story by the AP:

Swine flu cases up to 7, probe expanding

ATLANTA (AP) -- Health officials say a unique type of swine flu has now been diagnosed in seven people in California and Texas, up from the two reported earlier this week. The five new cases in the two states have all recovered, and testing indicates some mainstream antiviral medications work against the virus.

But it's a growing medical mystery: Only a few of the seven people were in contact with each other, and none were in contact with pigs.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials said Thursday they are expanding their investigation.

On another note, anyone think this Texas case could be patient zero?

CDC reports swine flu virus in Texas patient

Nov 24, 2008 (CIDRAP) -- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in its latest update on the nation's seasonal influenza activity, reported on a person who was infected with a swine influenza virus following several exposures to pigs, including a sick one.

This is interesting...I wish we knew where these 7 folks were now...they said they all recovered, its a little early for a recovery isn't it?  Even normal flu lasts 7 -10 days.  So are they in the hospital still?  My two sons and I all had teh flu but none of us were ever tested, so I wonder how many folks are walking around that have it and think its just a regular cold....there must be something specific about this type of flu that is sending them to the hospital in the first place to even get tested.  man i seriously hate hte lack of reporting in our country!

Again, not good.  Two of the patients are High School kids, which means this thing is most likely off and running.   It's too early to determine how bad this could get, but it would be wise to assume that it's "possibly" spreading, so everybody should be sure to practice their own (family) plans in avoiding the flu.

2 Steele HS Students Contracted Swine Flu

POSTED: Thursday, April 23, 2009
UPDATED: 4:55 pm CDT April 23, 2009

ATLANTA -- A unique type of swine flu has been diagnosed in five people in California and two in Texas. The two Texas cases were confirmed to be Steele High School students, Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD officials said.

Health officials said it's not a cause for public alarm -- all seven people recovered. Testing indicates some mainstream antiviral medications seem to work against the virus.

None of the seven people had been in contact with pigs, which is how people usually catch swine flu.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is checking people who have been in contact with the seven confirmed cases, who all got sick between late March and mid-April.

Also, one of the California cases -- a 10-year-old boy -- traveled to Dallas this month.

Swine flu symptoms are mostly involving fever, cough and sore throat, though some of the seven also had vomiting and diarrhea.

Two TX cases in San Antonio, 5 CA cases in southern CA.  No known relationship.  First case was about mid-March - last case CDC talked about today was about April 13.  All described as recovered or recovering.  One was hospitalized, now released.  CDC should be posting details on their website daily.

Fro

Long term: We cannot work on any long term solutions to problems we know are coming and stay competitive (stay in business) without a world government. We should be stockpiling enough food to feed millions of people for a long enough period of time to survive the droughts and other natural disasters we know are coming. We have to be able to move farmland to suit the weather, regardless of ownership. We need to anticipate and stockpile antibiotics, vaccines, and other medicines to deal with the flu pandemics and other plague we know are going to come. We need to be able to go though the natural disasters we know are coming without the social chaos and political upheavals that will compound the disasters. Not working on the long-term is certain doom.
